Bob out of New York has NOS sheet metal but heard it costs--however have to factor in the time($$$) on getting the new stuff right. Sorry ,forgot the name of his shop, someone should be able to quickly chime in--good luck.

General Discussion / Re: New Z28 Pricing.... $75K???
« on: January 13, 2014, 03:14:26 PM »
My buddy is retiring 1-21 this year and just showed me a copy on line of the new 427 Vette he ordered. Green ,tan interior ,convertible. 1K less than the Z out the door.

Saw the vid of the Z ,awesome ! But I think Chevy has gotten away from the target crowd of young people who can afford a "hot" car that can keep pace with a 75K car (stop light to stop light anyway)

Other end of the spectrum from my retiring buddy: young guy comes on, appears secure in his job. Saves for a year and puts some money down on a new Mustang. Whatever the "hot one" out there is--I don't follow the models. Black convertible top ,black leather, charcoal body. Sounds and runs strong. 36k. Of course he priced the supercharger at 8k---add headers, exhaust say he'll be at 46k--a lot of money but not so bad for a single guy with a good job. This package turned high 8's in a stock engine/suspended mustang on small slicks--no cage and should not have been able to run. But a very noted Mustang builder, guess he got a pass. Read the article last year.

Update on the new guy: getting married this September so plans for the supercharger are on hold for now ;) Would not be as funny if not 100% true ! He's been getting offers in the low 20's for the Mustang at work- LOL.

Timeless story and I'm sure a past most of the "hot cars" on this site share. But how many 69 Z's alone were sold ? And who was buying them? Pretty sure they were able to run stop light to stop light with a Vette. Or hold their own. I know with 4:88's and headers they turned in to quite a SOB. Don't call me names, but maybe GM should be putting out some affordable (see Ford in affordable) muscle out there. Save the high dollar iron for the empty nesters who planned well for the future. Anybody read stats on average student loan balances ? Younger crowd not lining up to buy 75K cars anytime soon...

mmm--mines been untouched and  appears low gloss, not flat by no means but non reflective. no texture. Actually a very smooth finish. Opinions may vary but been with this car 38 years and know the other owners.

The gaps and lines look dead on to me ( body)
Looks like they might have utilized the old weather seal around the doors--like it. I'm reusing all mine so I'm a little partial.

Not perfect from the factory ,what??  :D

Funny how you can look at all these cars and some just grab you. Not all do. Something about that blue Z does me.

Hope he gets it for a good price.

Pretty car---other than the " do-dads"  looks very straight an clean. If all the numbers are legit, hope you land it for around that price. Think I would inquire about some pictures during the body work phase. Surprised nobody really uses this as a selling point. Something to be said about low/no mud ,OE sheet metal.

the 60 Vette, hands down would be my pick---I'm only 47 and looking to buy in the near future not sell so not really complaining if the bottom drops ;D  And my Z , when I'm done playing with it, is going to my son. Many summers down the road.

Mine was done very "liberal" and I'm leaving it. Looks like new in there---someone don't like it--too bad LOL ! Cars in the shop or I'd post some pics.

General Discussion / Re: Ziebart... How to remove it?
« on: January 10, 2014, 12:02:17 AM »

Adding to my post: once the heavy stuff is off it will still look sort of nasty--just leave it alone a few days. The chemicals will still be working breaking down the residual. At this point a rag with a little mineral spirits will  wipe it clean. Had quite a few hours under the car, worked well for me.

PITA , did mine just because I want that detailed look ,something different for my own gratification.1. Used water based stripper, 15 min set time than scraped-  2 cycles. 2. Wiped down  sections with Lacquer thinner/ 3m pad. With respirator ,eye protection and proper protective clothing . Did this on the lift with all the shop doors open ,good ventilation and no ignition sources. Great results.  Will say the 40+ year old coating did it's job and the panels looked great underneath.   The stripper was not real aggressive and allowed me to go through layers of finish. I shot pics underneath showing body color overspray and primer colors under the car. And yes the rear wheel wells are getting re-coated. Surprisingly did find some light rust there under a layer of goo and several layers of black paint. Not to mention melted slick. I've heard some guys having great luck with a power scraper, maybe the undercoat turned brittle ? No such luck for me.  Oh, nice spread Gary , Hugger Orange Z really adds to the décor :)  I had a buddy down in South Carolina ( when I was in the Air Force ) whose parents had a drive in basement. His dad kept his  streetbikes down there ---thought that was the coolest.
