Restoration / rear brake/fuel line removal
« on: September 01, 2013, 01:03:47 AM »
I'm 99% sure of the answer but I am putting it out there anyway, do I have to wait to drop the subframe before removing the fuel and rear brake line ? They are OE and I don't want to #$%^ them up ! I am to the point of being sick of removing .040 of undercoating ,rustoleum , factory overspray etc... I am down to using a brass toothbrush with laq. thinner so almost there. Upside ,gorgeous !   Cook DW ???

Race cars are a whole lot easier than restoration !!

General Discussion / When fiction becomes fact
« on: August 31, 2013, 03:08:19 PM »
There have been some great stories in here about cars being reunited with the original owners. Also threads with heated debate where #1 owner's claims do not match the data. While my car's apart I'm taking the time to record all the numbers and complete the "lost years" 68-76,which is not hard seeing that the car has remained in a 100 square mile area. Growing up I've talked to the man who striped it ,and proudly stating so ! Who set up the rear end. Old friends who cruised and street raced in it. Those who added the hideaways ( they were going for the Old Reliable look) ,cowl hood ,front valiance etc...

A common story were those headers ,in the trunk via #1---heard it 37 years. But the story did not match the data. I figured maybe one of the other owners might have swapped them out for the more popular Hookers ( win on Sunday, sell on Monday) and planned on trying to track them down, people around here tend to hoard parts so it was not inconceivable they were in a attic. My carb is on a drag racer's shelf not far from here ,starters on a 38 rat rod. Cam in a 55. ( still running strong ).

But the story abruptly changed ,never came with headers. Which explains the plugged exhaust manifolds ! No questions, not a problem really no big deal.( of course never gave my intentions ,just stated what I now have is not what came in the trunk) He's still digging up pictures and when our schedules jive we're getting together.

Point being ,if you are really animate about documenting the history of your project and not perpetuating a myth ,do your research.

Am I going to purchase a set of beautiful replicas ,money permits, you bet !  ( kids in college  :'( ) But at least I will have the proper yarn to spin !

Restoration / Removing "jet hot" from aluminum intake.
« on: June 15, 2013, 05:37:21 PM »
20+ years ago the intake (one it was born with) off my 302 was coated by Jet Hot. No issues other than I want to go back to the natural finish. I have ran into a dead end as far as removal of the product. Want to get it out to CHP  but coating needs to come off per J.M. Jet Hot would rather leave their product on it, a company out of Texas ( runs 409's) offered to try blasting it ,no real guarantees. Need some input , thanks.

If anybody is interested check ebay Dead 67 in a field has hideaways however body bad. Maybe someone on this site can see something they need off it. Lots of parts. Shame--15-20 years ago owner probably said "gonna fix it up one day " now its pretty far gone. Saw 3 Camaros on blocks in a guys front yard when I was in  SC in the 80's. They were turning to soil back than.

General Discussion / day-2 vintage street rules/point system ?
« on: April 21, 2013, 01:21:18 AM »
Shooting for Carlisle and Maryland 2014 , does anyone have information on the judging for vintage street/day-2 and the point breakdowns ? This is the class we are building to compete in. From what I am reading it is period correct. 67-69 is 69 the cut off ?   If anybody has contact info it would be much appreciated ,I am looking for a break down of the rules.

Is day-2 , street and vintage street basically the same class ?

I've been on a N/E Ohio department for 20 years and wondering if there are any fellow FF's in the area with 1st gen Camaros ?

General Discussion / Thank you 69Z28-RS
« on: March 11, 2013, 06:44:15 PM »
The link you suggested helped with the downloads. Much appreciated ! Here are a few pics and a brief backround. Car came stripe delete ( aka plain Jane ! ) also console delete.#1 owner ordered tach ,headers ,fold down back seat ,4:10 gears , ( shoulder belts ? didn't know they were an option ) Added 67 hide aways and installed headers ,sold soon to #2 owner who had their camaro stole at the drags. Added cowl hood ,4:88's ,had car striped . ( I'm telling off the top of my head but 99% sure these are the facts ,easy enough for me to verify with them) all done prior to 1970. Dad bought in 76 with 28K on the odometer. 1989, acquired from my dad.1990 I put a 400 in it to do some dragracing (save the 302 ).That went to a street Anglia dad was building. 1991 M21 had seen enough abuse also inconsistent for bracket racing ,installed a full manual 350 and tied the frames.  Flash forward 2005, decided to go full race with the Anglia ,400 got callies crank ,Oliver rods ,JE pistons full roller ,dart heads and intake ... Larry Sikora chassis ,hoot to drive ( check youtube 48 Gasser's, that's were I also found Jerry M in Old Reliable which inspired me to get cranking with the build) BTY the 302 was freshened in 1990 ,tallied about 500 miles, and is sitting on the stand. M21 was gone through and detailed this last summer. Shy of resprayed quarters ,that's the original paint on it . 36 k miles (I was wrong in earlier posts) What it lost over the years : shocks ,master cylinder ,air pump ,fuel pump ,coil ,plugs and wires ,radio. However they had been long gone by 1976. Still have the tires worn , however spare never touched pavement also complete exhaust with hangers. It is getting a frame off. Just what I want to do ,plus my body man (also an old friend, very well known in area for his work) is shooting pics of all strip down ,prep and paint of the sheetmetal. He won and I removed the undercoating. Planning to have on the road next summer . As a write Jerry M has the distributor and brake booster for restoration with other parts to follow. A shout out to CHP , he really is helpful and a wealth of knowledge. I thought I knew these Z's but man can he fill in the blanks.

Restoration / undercoating
« on: March 07, 2013, 03:41:28 PM »
I know it is an older topic but I have a question on the front wheel wells. Having completed the task of removing all the goop we are re coating the rears as suggested ,I am thankful for the advice on leaving the floor pans and tunnel clean ( beautiful un- molested 45 year old sheet metal , IMO  should be seen ) I know the rears are a must ,but is it acceptable (judging) to leave the fronts clean ,If not is the correct pattern 12:00 to rear ? Wonderful site , have been following for years and finally decided to pull the trigger on my Z , original 34k numbers car in family 37 years with documentation and full history. Me and the car aren't getting any younger ,time to start enjoying it ! Also a wise man suggested going Day 2 ,perfect for me. Will post pics later.
