General Discussion / Re: HELP
« on: October 01, 2013, 11:56:43 PM »
Do you know the state it was purchased new in or the last state it was registered in?  I purchased a 69 hugger orange Z about 2 years ago from a guy in North Carolina. He thought he was the second owner because he had seen the car since he was a young boy in his small town. After many years of trying to buy it and being turned down the owner finally let it go to him. He owned it from 1996 until Feb of last year when we purchased it. I called the N.C. DMV to see if they offered title histories and for $20. I received all there certified info back to the original owner and dealership purchased at new. The guy I bought it from was wrong, he was the third owner. Long story short I have tracked down both owners before him and both were good enough to sign and notarize affidavits for me and I just received pictures from the original owner today showing the car right after he purchased the 69Z new. I'm really excited about it and feel very fortunate. My Z still has the complete original drive train still in. I just had Jerry M. come certify it last month. He is a great guy and it was a great experience meeting him. Also as a bonus the original owner included a picture of him and the next car he purchased back in the day which was a hugger orange Yenko LT1 Nova. I read on the Yenko site were only 10 were sold in 1970 in that color.
So you are doing the right thing in trying. Hopefully you can start with the last state in which it was registered and IF they offer title history it will either take the car back to new or back to the state it came in from. And you just keep going back from there. I know some states offer this and many don't mostly because of privacy acts. Good Luck and let us know.

Originality / Re: Missing trim tag
« on: September 30, 2013, 01:01:59 AM »
On my car it was both tags that the Highway Patrol checked. I watched him do it and then he wrote on his report "Paint Plate agrees to year" He was checking to see if the year on the trim tag matched the year on the VIN and title. This was Kansas don't know about other states.
Oklahoma did pass this law

"The tag has nothing to do with title or registration"  William, in most states I am sure you are right about that but not in Kansas. When I bought my 69 Z a couple years ago from out of state, I went to register it and by law all out of state titles and cars have to be inspected by the State Highway Patrol. He inspected both tags and he wrote on his report that "Paint plate agrees to year". Not sure what kind of registration problems it would have caused me had it been missing. Also just read that it is illegal to sell a car in Oklahoma with a missing or altered trim tag.

You mention that the plate "Original owner apparently glued it down to one of the warranty documents" here and on your TC post. That was glued by GM and or the dealer when new. That's the way they all came. Just thought I would mention that in case you were thinking of detaching it.

General Discussion / Re: original paint 69 Z on ebay... "survivor"
« on: September 03, 2013, 05:17:31 AM »
it was on EBay a few weeks ago and if I remember right it ran its course and brought upper 30's. It showed sold but this is the same seller so I assume the deal didn't go through. I admired it and wished I had the room and extra $ to bid on it last time. It appears to be a nice original survivor.

Gary let me know if he won't take it back. My car is a 07A car and I found a very nice 9E jack and I might be willing to do some trading with you.

« on: April 03, 2013, 12:19:22 AM »
I've been wondering the same thing. My 07A X77D80 car as far as I know has never had the original engine out and it has many of the original parts still on it, alt, dist., carb, etc. and my AC fuel pump just recently went bad and I assumed it was the original and it is also a 40987. So would be very interested in any info as well.

my 07A X77D80 car has the original paint still on the cowl induction hood and my DZ engine never been out of the car. My coil bracket is notched and looks like the above picture. I have been told it is also the same bracket used on 70 chevelle cowl induction hoods. Also the coil changes from flat hood Z's to a 270br for cowl hoods and 293 for flat hood cars

That makes sense to me also and what I was thinking especially since that is exactly how different engine dress up parts are dated on my car that i am 99.9% are original as the motor has never been out of the car. I have many that are a week or two ahead of the engine assembly but starter that is after and closer to the build date of the car. I also thank you all for the answers and the original question because I had been searching for the same info.

Ed,
That confirms why my starter date is after the engine assembly but correct me if Im wrong but all the items listed that were put on after the engine and trans were mated and VIN stamped could be dated after the engine assembly but could also have been dated before the engine assembly also depending on stockpile etc. Right? Again my alternator, distributor and carb are dated a week or two ahead of engine assembly but the starter after. Also not many original parts missing on my car but of course the dreaded exhaust manifolds and smog so when searching I can now look for anything just ahead of my car build date or earlier after reading your report. Thanks!

The build date on my Z is July with a May28th DZ assembly on the pad that has never been out of the car. All the original parts such as alternator, distributor, carb are all dated earlier in May but the starter, M20 trans and BU rear are all dated late June. Therefore I assume the starter wasn't put on at the factory until after the trans and therefore could be dated after the engine assembly but before the car build date.
