Originality / VIN upper dash panel question
« on: December 17, 2013, 07:13:57 PM »

I am looking at purchasing a 69 Camaro collector car, not a plain jane. I am in the process of checking out all the numbers, paperwork etc. I know this was a common problem, the windshield leaked over the years which caused the upper dash to rot and rust. He replaced the upper dash panel which means the VIN plate had to be removed and reattached. My question is if the hidden VIN, drive train numbers, owner history and paper work all check out would this be a deal breaker for you? I know the repop panels are easy to detect because of the VIN window. I would really like to own the car but it isn't cheap and I don't want to invest in a car with a permanent black eye.
I would appreciate your thoughts please!
Thanks!

That site says the title is active but the registration expired 6/30/2000.  Probably means it moved out of the state when it was up for sale back in 2000, or its still in FL sitting on blocks somewhere.

It is currently still registered in Florida. If you look at the column on the left it says, Title Status: "Active" which means current. My wife is a loan officer in the state of Florida and this is a public site they use that lets them check to see if it is current and with or without a lien.
Also, it is possible to find out who the current or past owners are. I just did one a couple of months ago.

Your car is currently registered in Florida. Has been since 1998.

Gary, my comments were really directed to William's comment, "Repro tags are easy to spot and will raise suspicions about the car" The bad guys in our hobby are working harder and harder to perfect a trim tag so that the experts such as William and the others here at CRG can't spot them. There have just been so many plain jane camaros that have "become" real Z/28's, Z/11 Pace cars etc.and then they pass them off as the real authuentic deal. This is hurting our hobby when these cars become cloned to become something it wasn't born with only for monetary gain. My point with my comment above is that I am hoping that these bad guys have not perfected these tags yet and will not be able to fool all the experts as they claim for the purpose of forgery and theft.
I am also very sorry for the loss in your family.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and all the best on your project.

I heard recently about a local guy that had a missing tim tag. He just got a replacement for his supposed 69 pace car project. Supposedly the guy selling the new trim tag guaranteed him that none of the "experts" will be able to tell. Made me sick to hear it and I'm hoping it is just a sales pitch and you guys can still bust them no matter how good they think they are getting.

Yes, very impressive David.
Learning lots here for when I do mine down the road. CRG is by far the best source for original resto info that I have found.
