Hmmm - DF ralleys with a Y55 battery, E70-15 tires. Looks interesting -

Originality / Re: 68 Transmission Tunnel cut out identification
« on: August 17, 2014, 05:55:26 PM »
I believe Fisher Body used the same cutout for all '68 floor shifts - I can find no difference/dimensions in the AIM.

The shifter appears to be an aftermarket (bolt stops) Competition Plus four speed shifter, non-console for general use - could have been used on a lot of things. Floor hasn't been butchered too awfully bad - imminently repairable. Couple of options for shifters, from retrofit with a Muncie handle to a reproduction Muncie shifter, depending on what you want to create.

Mild Modifications / Re: Swapping a 700R 4 into a 67
« on: August 15, 2014, 03:17:43 AM »
My good friend and GM engineer built a 200, and put it behind his '69 Firebird 400 BB convertible - no mods, 8000 miles on it since with no problems behind the 400. Great cruising rpm and gas mileage, too. Adjustable lock up controller for his converter as well - really slick. Started with a '87 Monte SS used trans, built from there -

You could always drop a 2004R into it - you can build them to handle all the horse power you want, plus they are identical in dimensions to the TH350. Driveshafts slide right in with no mods - same length, same yoke. Gives you a lock up converter, overdrive and no real hassle to install.
There is a visual drawback (not much of one), in that the bellhousing carries a dual bolt pattern - BOP and Chevy. Remember, though , that these were used behind Monte SS's and Grand Nationals back in the day - use the right HD parts and configure them correctly, and they'll hold up behind a lot of HP engines. You'll need to source the Chevy dipstick and tube to mate the bolt pattern to a Chevy block, otherwise the tube bolts to the BOP bolt pattern.

One more good thing - find a local junkyard that has a lot of late 80's GM vehicles, and you've got a better than average chance of finding good core trannies for like $25.00, like I did. Bought several of them. Or, a lot of trans builders offer them as built/ready to go performance trans for about the same money as a 700.

Just my opinion -

I'm enjoying it - really energizes me to start hauling stuff out of storage and into the light.

Man, I've got to get busy -

Keep it going, Darrell - you're doing good.

Darrell, What is the date code on the jack itself?

Rick - you beat me to the punch by a minute or two - I type at the speed of slugs -

Darrell,

Sharp car, good project.

This reminds me a lot of my X77 - unrestored, apart since '80, all there but scattered (LeMans/white no VT).

You forgot the pic with the date code on the jack head rivet -

General Discussion / 1968 Chevrolet Camaro / Chevrolet document
« on: August 11, 2014, 02:40:37 AM »
For your viewing enjoyment - the excerpts from this manual ( titled "1968 Chevy Camaro") were sent to rare396bronze in 1993, in response to an inquiry he placed with Chevrolet Customer Assistance concerning info on his '68. I've never seen this previously, so we thought we might post it for viewing. Hopefully the pic size is legible -  it makes for interesting reading -

Steve

General Discussion / Re: valve confusion
« on: August 09, 2014, 04:09:12 PM »
Colvin in CBTN shows the 041 was used (I assume in rare cases) as an alternative head on the Z's, and unverified as the Corvette 350/350 heads. I guess it might be possible that they could have been installed on a 350/300 by mistake (same 041 head with 1.94/1.50 valves). Depends on how long you have known the engine - possible upgrade at some point to the 2.02/1.60 valves ?

Aberrations are difficult to explain, even more difficult to verify.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: DF wheels
« on: August 08, 2014, 03:09:35 AM »
Are these worth a trade for a set of YH wheels? Or can they be used in place of YH's until I find a set for my 69?

There are a lot fewer DF's out there than YH's. The 15 X 6 DF wheel is nearly indistinguishable from the YH 15 X 7, unless you note the narrower trim ring, plus the derbys stick out a little farther due to the flatter offset.

Trade value should be about equal, depending on the need - some think both are made from platinum scrap. You can find desperate people in either year -

Maintenance / Re: Running Hot?
« on: August 07, 2014, 02:54:51 PM »
My only reason for leaving the tubes in place is the 30 degree countersink under the tube - the tube seat seals that, then the flat nail head seals the top of the tube. You could always cut the tubes/nail short if you don't want to obstruct exhaust gas flow. On the other hand, as fragile as the manifold is to work with, I would not alter the tube hole itself for the risk of either damaging the manifold or not being able to reverse the alteration (like I experienced with my originals when trying to extract tapered pipe plugs from the A.I.R ports). I have worked out a lot of pipe plugs from these things, up to and including drilling out the old plugs/fittings, and lifting leftover materials out 1 thread at a time. Nothing like spending 4-5 hours doing that on an expensive, unobtanium exhaust manifold- great for relaxation and stress relief (LOL !).
