Maintenance / Re: 7029202 Q-jet Issues
« on: August 05, 2015, 01:10:04 AM »
Any update ?

I've been struggling with a number of 7029202 issues for the last couple of weeks - what I deserve for relying on someone else's rebuild (read as mangle).

Your power valve may not have been positioned well during the "top drop". Tough to keep it from popping up out of the bore unless you are very careful, or use a new split bushing which will help keep the thing positioned correctly until the top casting is set in place. It only takes four or five hands to do it, as you probably know. There is also a small spreader spring that should be in place on the upper needle mount area, helps keep them aligned and not touching the float arms. Gasket will position the hanger correctly if the power valve/needle assembly is installed in the gasket correctly -

Secondary well plugs can be replaced with new o-ringed plugs. I'm doing that on mine next weekend, will share some pics on procedure if you'd like them.

My worst problem is a heli-coiled inlet. Someone butchered the gasket sealing surface around the inlet fitting at the same time - my worst headache now. Hopefully I can get it sealed.

I still think they are great carbs, despite some drawbacks in design (like the front bolts), they flow well and last a long time in use with minimal care. A lot of parts are available still, so good luck with your 202 -

Steve

01C X77 LeMans - "X7" on bulkhead. I hope my 12A L78 shows either a 2 or at worst a 6 - never been able to tell otherwise.

Restoration / Re: Rocker panel molding installation

As Paul Harvey said - now, the rest of the story.

I hope this holds for '68's - my Z was treated to a repaint before I bought it (in black, from British Racing Green), and the bimbos that painted it covered the holes and did not reinstall the moulding. Go figure -

Measurements -

This may appear a mite crude, but the measurements are accurate. You can base it all from the rocker panel and quarter panel to locate the channel (and the moulding) accurately. I've included a pic of the rearmost mounting bracket (channel) hole; all of the bracket holes are .500" (hole cneterline) below the top edge of the rocker - the rearmost bracket hole is 2.125" forward of the quarter panel edge to the hole centerline. Rear moulding screw hole is 2.500" forward of the quarter edge to the centerline of the screw hole. Installation should be pretty straightforward - bracket locates entirely on the rocker, clip the moulding in place, check the alignment for parallel to the rocker, locate the rear moulding hole 2.500" from the rear qtr. edge, and then drill the last two (front and rear) moulding holes to finish. You can put a dab of paint or sealer on the moulding screws to protect the metal after drilling. Mock it up using these dimensions and see if I got it right.

Be sure and compare the old moulding to a new one if you have one - if you're using a repro, check to make sure all of the bracket holes and the overall bracket dimensions are a match - we've all been burned by poor quality reproductions. If you need addtional pics or info, let me know. I have several sets of NOS if you need dimensional checks -

Give me a bit and I'll get you pics and dimensions. My originals are off of the car, but all holes are original and untouched. Just need to figure out how to template them -

I can compare old to NOS if you need to reference the channel - if you have NOS molding kits, you won't have to worry -

Maintenance / Re: Quadrajet Float Bowl: Is anything not repairable?
« on: July 29, 2015, 05:15:56 AM »
Check out Quadrajetparts online - they offer all pertinent parts, plus a pretty unique way to seal the well plugs I had not seen before. Pretty inexpensive and simple to do - positive, permanent sealing for the secondary well plugs. Read the tech article in the website for the procedure.

I've found my 7029202 carb has been Helicoiled on the inlet in the past - evidently a poor job, so it leaks no matter how tight I've gotten the connection, or with a liberal dose of Permatex #2. These guys offer the services to Helicoil the inlet and machine the gasket surface, and pressure check the repair to make sure it seals. After struggling with this for a couple of weekends, I think it's gonna make the trip to NJ for a hopeful repair.

Riveted construction too, if I'm not mistaken. I've still got my old set hanging around somewhere, I'll have to dig them out to look at finishes (too old to remember !). Defintely organic/asbestos pads -

Read this thread if you haven't already - also gives you a couple of good reasons not to use the 700 -

I've suggested this a few times; use the 200 4R, from 86-87 Monte SS if you can find one. They can be beefed up to handle a lot of power, or work fine for a stock L48 300 horse. Lock up converter to boot.

Benefits - overall length just like the TH350, same driveshaft yoke and length. Downside - dual Chevy/B-O-P bellhousing, but you can cut off the extra ears if you want to get sneaky. A good friend of mine has one behind his 400 Firechicken, and has nearly 10K miles so far with no difficulties at all, I've got one stashed for my L48 now.
Cheap cores at the yards - $25-75.00, generally.

Just my opinion -

Doesn't get a lot better than that - very nice. I like the stance as well - there is no doubt that Chevrolet got the '9's perfected.

Now, if we could have just convinced them to have started the 2010's to look like this, there'd be a whole lot more of them sold - just my opinion.

Steve

Thanks for the pic !

No problem - happy to be of assistance.

From the section of pic, looks like a pretty car. Details like this are noticeable - glad you asked -

Makes me want to take mine to the bank and put it in a safety deposit box.

Only thing I question - what's the white paint doing on the jack ? Mine is all blue (and a little rust around the fringes) -

Almost looks like it may be NORS, rather tha NOS -

Pat,

Welcome to the CRG - I've been hoping that the current owner would surface one day.

I have known this car for a long time as I mentioned before - inspected and drove it many years ago, pre-restoration. The car had been stored for a long time, locally, before the owner finally decided to sell it. I had offered to buy it myself at least twice in the '90's, but it never came to pass. I would love to know the trail of ownership since the Mecum auction in 2010 - kinda lost track of it after it went to Connecticut for a brief ownership.

I'll send you a PM with specifics - document your ownership of the car, and you'll have the documentation you need for the car. No strings attached -

Regards,
Steve

(apologize for the poor quality of the picture - my car phone was not eqipped with a camera in 1989 !)

Originality / Re: China Crap
« on: June 22, 2015, 11:44:01 PM »
Bearings, in particular, can be marked "Made in USA" and still contain foreign manufactured components. I have a bearing plant in my area (name withheld, but it's a big one) that has been importing Chinese races for years - rejection rate at one time was over 75% from incoming inspection alone. Material harness, dimensional tolerances, you name it, all bad. Purely disgusting -

Another big bearing plant near me just announced they are moving operations to Mexico. So goes the rest of our manufacturing base. Best be combing swap meets and junkyards for vintage "good" parts if you're not already -

Regards,
Steve
