General Discussion / Re: Fair Market Value

Man, I guess I just saved my car from either being painted H.O, or being used by test dummies...

Somebody said they were proposing using H.O. cars as donors for artificial reefs offshore ?

Before the hate mail erupts, realize that statement is an attempt at a jest -

Steve

                                   3 row radiator UY,IO,OO, NO A/C

You certain about the originality of the radiator ? Codes are unusual: UY tag is either a COPO curved neck 4 core, or a 396 w/A/C 4 core. IO tank code is a 4 core BB curved neck (which would match the pics above), OO is BB manual trans. Look for the date codes on the radiator - if they are a close match, this could get better. My L78 is a three core manual, pretty sure it's an original to the car. Possible HD rad ordered for this one, but who knows ? Now, if it only had a BE coded rear end stuffed under it -

No its not a potential purchase..  Stop reading into things..   ;)  Besides not enough cubes for me anyways.. 8)

If that's the case I'll be glad to store the red '68 in my garage - too few cubic inches for sure -

It depends on how long your state will hold information until the system is purged. They do not hold data indefinitely.

As Darrell mentioned, Tennessee changed a few years back - they stopped going back to the archives (which are on microfiche) due to fewer employees and no overtime, according to the DOT office. They still have the records, but just won't cooperate and look them up. Even when they did, in the last years they would go all the way back, the Federal Privacy Act forbid them to hand out the paperwork with owner's names or personal info on them, so they redacted the names. Thanks goodness I got mine before they clamped down - all the paperwork from new on both the '68 and '69 Z's (they were sold new in Tennessee). Looked up a couple of others over the years as well. A real gift -

Point is, maybe you can negotiate with a willing DOT clerk in your state - I'd bet that most states have archives somewhere; the trick would be to get someone to locate and/or dive in to find them. I wonder if offering to fund some overtime would help motivate some people - just my opinion. How much would it be worth to anyone to own documentation ?

Originality / Re: Lower windshield clip bolt
« on: September 15, 2015, 03:40:12 PM »
All the glass is original and date matched, unfortunately it's clear rather than tinted (for such a low cost option, I wish the original owner had ordered it). Quandary - the glass is delaminating in spots, should I replace it or drive it ? Some wiper haze on the windshield, too - minor scratches elsewhere. I never paid too much attention to it before now, when original means more than modified in a lot of eyes -

The '68 was ordered with tint, thank goodness. Pace Car is tinted (A/C), but the L78 is clear also. I guess I should be thankful for what I have - and not complain.

Steve

As close a shot as I could get of my untouched original (from my 01C X77). Note the rubber coating on the clip, the excess sealant around the clip and bolt, and the original winshield seal under the glass. Never molested -

Originality / Re: 69 z Rear Panel Question
« on: September 07, 2015, 01:10:07 PM »
Guarantee you it was an emblem. I think I remember it on the car in the late '80's when I drove it.

Capitol was a fixture in Nashville forever. I bought several cars from them over the years, and it was my first parts source as a Chevrolet dealer dating back to 1970. They were competition to the dealer that my X77 was sold through (Jim Reed), who became my GM parts source right up to the time they lost their GM dealer status during the cutback.

Capitol sold out to Carl Black several years back, moved literally across US41 to the old Nacarato GMC dealership. Junkyards are still full of Capitol emblems around Middle TN -

100% correct on the dealer emblem. Mine was on the car in the same area when I bought it, I removed it at the first repaint in '75 when I installed the ZL2 hood. Stupid thing to do when the original lacquer was in great shape, but I wanted the new paint to match in the days when computerized matching was not even a dream.

Took me a long time to find a vintage emblem - when it goes back on, it will be backed by a magnet -

Speaking of areas prettier than around here. And speaking of Tennessee, how close are you to this place Darrell ?

My wife and I, and most likely another couple, are talking about taking a spring trip. Like to go this fall but too many time constraints. Would be pretty cool to look you up and check out your Camaros in person.

No wonder my Z's never getting done, lol. Gotta go now. Time to start replacing my porch columns with composites.

When you go, run down the road to Sevierville and check out this one - helps round out the trip. The mountains are pretty enough, but a good dose of muscle helps pass the time -

Been a Floyd Garrett follower since I saw his '61 Impala SS in Super Chevy in the '80's, plus I got to see his '9 ZL1 at Super Chevy Bristol in person and discuss the car. He's a great guy and a great Chevy man to boot -

Ditto that.  Floyd is a super nice guy.  I remember when we went up there and didn't see Mr. Garrett the whole time we were inside until we get back outside and he's outside looking over dad's 1st pacer..   ;D   Cant remember if it was the Rod Run, Grand Run or the Camaro Nationals at the Grand Hotel back in '96-'97...

Pretty sure it was the Grand - wife and I were there. Remember it distinctly - Carman drove it through one of our infamous monsoons the night he got there (going to dinner), had it clean as a whistle the next morning. He was never afraid to jump in one and drive it wherever the show was - no trailer queens in your family for sure.

Thanks for jogging my memory -

Restoration / Re: Grille Replacement
« on: September 06, 2015, 07:00:33 PM »
I know one thing - it's tight. You have to compress the grille to get it to clear the header panel and pop in place - scares the devil out of me to do it. I've had mine out for repair for a while - not really looking forward to putting it back (about ready to replace it with an NOS grille I have anyway).

You can do it without moving anything, just be careful and take your time.

How about them Vols. Did not sleep to well last night was thinking about a swap meet today. Hey Steve do you think I could take Smokey with me in a couple to the Good Guys car show to sniff out some Camaro parts.

I'd be willing to bet you can keep ahead of him on sniffing out the keepers. Probably get him to pack them back for you (which would take some of my load bearing duties off - ).

Just kidding, of course -

Smokey IX looks too laid back, kinda like the Vols were at that point.

Smokey X has a much more enthused appearance - same kind of enthusiasm a certain good friend of mine does when he gets near a Camaro parts deal in the swap meets.

Go Vols !

Steve
