Originality / Re: Trunk Lid Identification
« on: March 07, 2015, 05:33:57 AM »
Really? I guess I just assumed that all trunk lids were pierced at the time of manufacture ready for the standard (non-D80) emblem location, and additional holes were punched at the factory if the car had D80..... well that's something else I've learned!

Tabs under the lip, holes in the outer panel for the T/A spoiler, build week, assembly plant and a photo. (69)
OK. 04A Van Nuys build (NCRS shipper doc has production date of April 1, 1969), original paint under trunk lid. Sheetmetal date stamp T A 12. Photos tell the story. Interesting to note the original emblem holes in the lid where the spoiler sits, car is definitely a D80 and has one torsion rod thicker than the other.

Driver's side of trunk lid:

Passenger's side of trunk lid:

Lip detail (no tabs):

Emblem mounting and original (non-spoiler) emblem piercing:

Sheetmetal date code:

Front (leading edge) of spoiler mounting nut:

Rear (trailing edge) of spoiler mounting nut:

NOTE: spoiler is currently off the trunk lid during restoration, and was briefly removed in 1971 for the car to have it's drag-racing paint job applied, so no way to know if these nuts are original. However they do still have traces of dum-dum sealant around them.
Mike's (rszmjt's) picture shows captured washer on the nuts on his car.

Thanks,
Ok we still need more 03 & 04 69 cars (NOR & LOS) along with early 08-66 - 01-67  LOS
Darrell, can you clarify exactly what details/areas of the trunk lid you need for your spreadsheet?

So was the upper cowl stripe color applied after firewall blackout on all Z28s (plus Z10/11) at both NOR and LA?

Restoration / Re: Which was done last, Cowl white or firewall blackout on Z
« on: February 26, 2015, 06:28:41 AM »
My understanding of JohnZ's assembly process article and reading threads with pictures of survivor cars is that the blackout was always done last, after the stripe color was applied to the upper cowl area. The assembly article states the sequence was color booth, reflow oven, then blackout booth (for non-stripe cars); if the car required stripes, these were masked and manually sprayed in the repair booth/reflow oven after the color bake, therefore I read that to mean this occurred prior to blackout booth.
Obviously black striped cars are harder to determine this detail on, but many of the pictures in similar threads showing cars with white stripes exhibit a gradual blending of the firewall black onto the upper cowl, over body and stripe color. Many over-restored cars show an incorrect hard tape line at the transition.

Never seen one either, until this one. Now I cannot say for sure if JM has inspected the car, but Kurt is aware of it. I will ask owner. It's an 09D car, Hugger Orange, narrow rear stripes, and by 'documented' I meant it has PoP, window sticker, sales receipt, owner's manual, warranty paperwork, every single receipt, owner's handwritten tune-up notes and service records from new. Bought from Fred Gledhill Chevrolet, spec'd with 4.10 posi, VE3, vigilite, AM/FM, console with gauges, deluxe black interior and more. Block is V0913DZ, never rebuilt, still had grease pencil marks on block between freeze plugs and on heads. Has original ADs with Wide Tread GTs. Last on road in 1987.

No early cars were stamped on the oil filter boss and no late cars made in LOS someone has been stamping on the block.
James I assume you mean no early NOR cars? I know of a documented LA Z/28 9L502xxx that has the partial down by the oil filter.

Not sure about NOR, but my VN car also had the sequence number marked on the driver's side 'saddlebag' behind the fender. Not sure if it was grease pencil, crayon or maybe chalk though, as I left it alone as found.

^ That listing link above includes the following description, which is at odds with the 'clear' title from the eBay listing:
"Vehicle Title:   Rebuilt, Rebuildable & Rec"
(Whatever that means? More likely just an error on the website wording, but worth checking)
