Restoration / Re: bent underside of subframe cross member
« on: May 15, 2015, 10:45:44 PM »
Have a look over at TC. Al (user name 'BPOS') did this repair on his subframe, and also reinforced the area with box-section steel so it wouldn't bend again if he used the jack there.

Thanks Darrell. Chick's shackle plates appear to be stamped with an 'S' on the outside face, whereas mine have a different letter ('B') stamped on the inside face, hence my original question.
I happened to notice a set very much like mine being offered for sale as 'correct', and just wondered if mine were original or not.

Looking for confirmation on how to identify original assembly-line correct rear leaf spring shackles; I have a set which I believe are correct and they each have a letter stamped on the inside face. What other identifying features (other than shape) should originals have, and if there was more than one supplier, did those ID features vary?

Scott, see post above your last. Same link.

Chris, how bad is it bent? Do you have a picture of it? My original VE3 (still fitted) took a shipping ding on the passenger side between inner and outer brackets when the car was in transit on the Pacific, and I've been putting off the straightening job for far too long. Going to make it a must-do project over our Southern Hemisphere winter (your summer, so next few months). No idea what the inner steel structure consists of, but if I can't reshape it with tools I have in my workshop, going to have to take it to a collision/body guy.....

Steve, thanks for posting those pictures, they triggered a vague memory of date codes being discussed. I'll have to search for that forgotten thread, but my recollection now is that the discussion was whether the code was a Julian date or a month/week/year.

I had a look at a few of the usual vendors' details and it seems the 'rivet' head end of the bolt is serrated to grip the hole.
Here's the link to just one such vendor's item, in case anyone else is curious:

Restoration / Re: Removing Woodgrain From 69 Ashtray Door

Thanks John, so this was applied some time later on then. Doesn't matter, as I want to remove the woodgrain and I picked up the ashtray door with a suspicion it wasn't a factory application.

ok, if someone were to remove the tach would it have a ink stamp that would pertain to the date ?
Interesting question. I have certainly seen some speedometers with a date code on them (here's one below), but IIRC my tach had an ink-stamped part number but no date code.

So how do you tighten up the 'rivet-headed' bolts?

Bentley, I'll PM you but please do not feel bad, there is no problem.Although we all love our Camaros and other cars, nothing whatsoever can be as important as our families, our health and happiness. A few bits cut off a parts car pale into minuscule insignificance compared to those things, and I'd gladly urge you to forget about them if it helps!
So here's to the future, I sincerely hope you can get proper diagnosis and treatment and work towards regaining your usual health and positive outlook on life. Be cool, the journey may take a while but you're travelling with good company.

Restoration / Removing Woodgrain From 69 Ashtray Door
« on: May 08, 2015, 09:25:46 AM »
I have an ashtray door for a 69 in original dark blue paint, but it has the woodgrain effect overlay on it. I'm going to try and remove the film carefully without stripping the paint beneath, and wondered if any of you have done this and would have tips or suggestions. Maybe soaking in a mild detergent solution?
On a related note, if this is an original factory woodgrain, would the factory really have painted a black door the dark blue, only to then cover the entire visible part with woodgrain film? Seems like a waste of time if so.
