General Discussion / Re: Highly documented resto 69 Z/28

What are the holes just to the right of the windshield wiper switch?
Looks like the car (or the dash carrier, at least) originally had the woodgrain trim insert.

Compare the weight of it with a known original. If it's significantly less, I'd say it's a reproduction. I compared 68 rear bumpers a few years ago and found some repro's weighing over 2 lbs less than an original.
Unless the latest repros have got heavier (which is a possibility), the weight is a good way to determine GM or not. I weighed my 69 rear bumper when this came up in a similar thread several years ago. Will have to see if I can find that thread and provide the URL.

Hans my 04A LOS car has numbers in that exact same spot. I don't have photos to hand but from memory it was '948', so probably a production number rather than anything relating directly to body color. The '71' on top of the firewall blackout of a Lemans Blue LOS car is a real puzzle to my understanding of the assembly process.

The color indication written on the firewall was BEFORE color coats.
James you mentioned previously that the yellow crayon was over (on top of) the firewall paint, so are you saying that LOS GMAD applied the firewall blackout before the main body color, therefore opposite to NOR (per the Assembly Process article)?

I am not sure how you got you LA Camaro down there but, it is a long plane flight (I think 16 hours). I can't imagine how long it would take to ship something down there or back.
Shipped out of LA via sea freight back in 1999. I think it was about 6 weeks on the water, but wasn't most direct route (cheaper). Options are either RO-RO (costs a lot more if car is a non-runner because it can't be driven on/off ship) or you pre-load car in a shipping container. Unfortunately the RO-RO option can sometimes result in damage sustained to the car, or worse still, not everything that is on the car on departure remains on it on arrival dockside......
Flight time is 14-16 hours from our east Coast up to LA, not too bad; I regularly travel over to London and that's about 24 hours with a refuelling stop part-way.

How close were you to purchasing it?
At the time it was on eBay, I was very tempted to bid on it, especially as it had a pretty low starting bid and apparently no interest. To me, it would have been very cool to have the 'twins' but when I considered how much work the car needed, plus the cost of shipping another non-runner to Australia, plus I still have a long way to go on the LOS car, I opted to pass on the NOR twin.
I did get in touch with the owner after the auction ended, and we swapped stories which was pretty cool. Suspect his will be finished before mine, but nice to think they'll both hit the streets again - albeit on opposite sides of the world.

James, interesting observation on the yellow crayon on top of the firewall blackout. Why would they need to do that, as the car would have been painted body color by the time that was written?

Yes, I found my car's twin in 2014, see this http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=307201
I got in touch with the owner and he ended up keeping the car and has since started restoring it himself. Funny thing, his car is an early NOR car (pre-X code) but has a lot of details that suggest it may've left the factory as a Z/28.

Restoration / Re: Friendly tip on Plastic Lenses

I've had good results using toothpaste to clean up light scratches on dash lenses, but that looks outstanding! Nice work.

The 143rd VIN assigned (7N100143) would have been on a late August or September car, not December; the partial above the blower motor is a better match to a December car. Also looks like a V8 engine pad but an L6 VIN tag. Hmmm.

Restoration / Re: The High $cost of restoration... $135 plastic strap?????

All it takes is one or two high-roller, "money is no object" buyers doing a concours resto to pay the asking price and then sellers will hold out with unrealistic expectations waiting for someone else to follow.

I remember this same car was discussed at length either here, at Team Camaro or yenko.net when previously listed on eBay. I searched a while but couldn't turn up the thread. Seem to recall there was more to the back story of how the car was wrecked, and possibly involved drink driving? IIRC, someone posted in that thread and suggested that the car be left as it sat in the woods as a reminder to young kids to not D&D, rather than being restored. If anyone else remembers that thread, hopefully we can track it down.

IIRC, L89 figures were included in L78 because it was a cylinder head option RPO on mandatory L78. But that only accounts for about 311 cars versus your figures.......
