Bill, I had a gnarly looking smog pump that was stained and had that white chalky corroded appearance. I used a solution that is made to clean a/c A coils. It is an alkali, I believe. Will have to look at it tomorrow and see what the ingredient is. It foams up and has to be rinsed thoroughly, but it did the pump justice IMO. I don't have any before pics. I get a chance, I will take a pic. Just an idea.

Originality / Re: 1969 Camaro Left Side Ajax Mirror
« on: March 17, 2014, 01:12:25 PM »
GM must have had a good handle on dated mirror supplies and knew how many to order for what...a production week, or month maybe? And if there was an issue at DMI, Ajax's were ordered with the dates for production up to when DMI fixed whatever issue they were having. Is this how it went?
My thought would be that GM just had two suppliers so they didn’t stop production due to being out of required part like a mirror. I am sure the parts were dated coded to track any manufacturing defects like the glass falling out because of bad glue, not that the dated part had to go on a vehicle assembled within a certain time frame. My C AX 9 mirror is on a 5A car.

Mike

This supplier issue got me thinking. First, I am sure when GM has a contract with a supplier it is because GM felt the supplier could meet their demand, so something must have happened that prevented the supplier from fulfilling its contract. Could have been a labor issue, fire, or some equipment failure or downstream supplier (supplier to DMI). Ajax may have been another manufacturer supplier, like for Ford or Chrysler and GM may have had contracts that provided a backup plan, IE, different supplier in case of a mentioned unforeseen delay. Or, DMI may have sub-contracted Ajax (more likely), if they could not fulfill their contract.  Makes sense to me. I am sure Ajax was not just sitting around with their collective feet on a desk waiting to get back up orders from DMI or GM.
Second, and this is just my experience in manufacturing, is that GM had a standing quantity contract based on engineering calculations of productions in many product lines. I don't think someone got on the phone at, say, Norwood and called DMI to order more mirrors. I am sure it is more a case that once a contract was made, a supplier made X amount of an item per month whether needed or not and more of an automatic shipment schedule that sent out the item on a weekly or monthly schedule.
So, the Ajax mirror, may have been subcontracted through DMI when DMI realized it could not meet its contract demand because of mentioned unforeseen circumstances.

Good day all,

I would like to introduce myself and my project in that great forum.

My name is Fahad from Saudi Arabia.

My project is 69 Camaro SS/RS.

I will start my restoration process with posting.

And I am proud to be here and glad to get members advice and comments.

A big WELCOME Fahad. Glad you are here! We are "proud" that you are on this "great" site and want to learn more about you and your car. I see many things on your car that I would have questions about. Are there many Camaros in Saudi Arabia? You need a lot more pictures...so, please start get them on here. How long have you owned this car? How did you come about getting your car? What is it about Camaros that made you want to own onw? Do you have friends that have Camaros too? That orange car in your first post, who does that belong to? Welcome again.

Restoration / Re: 68 Z engine parts
« on: March 14, 2014, 03:23:15 AM »
It is everything you need plus gaskets. Usually sold in kit form some savings overall on parts. You just order by bore and journal size. Since you have gaskets, I guess you can nix that. But, you may want to compare prices and it still may be cheaper. plus most places stock these over individual parts. It has been a long time since I built anything so things may be different. Last re-ring kit I bought was $50 if that is any indication.

Mahle is good stuff. See if they(Summit or Jegs) can sell you a re-ring kit. You will save $$ and it will have everything needed except main bearings or Cam bearings. Mahle has a clevite 77 bearing
cracked bosses could be from a Big cam? and rockers binding(hitting )stud which will crack them.

General Discussion / Re: Is this tag real or fake?
« on: March 13, 2014, 06:55:43 PM »
James I was unaware that there were 2 different head rests, when did they switch them?

Azure good eye with what you picked up, should this car have a short spoiler as well? ( if any at all)

Also looks like the hood was added on, just guessing since the wiring isn't hooked up to it.
http://www.camaros.org/headrest.shtml#1969 Here you go Bullitt65. Late November of 68. Car does not have proportioning valve under master. And distribution valve is in wrong location. I bet booster is wrong too. Like I said earlier, a lot of details are wrong and I am not a Z owner. I know my BB's better My Blue car has straight headrests, other 2 curved. Funny how a trained eye sees so much. Guess I could add missing hood side bumpers, air cleaner stud wrong. Horns wrong as is color of hood latch/hinges looks like early 2 piece kick panels.Bullitt, ask owner for VIN, bet it is pre-X code? Want me to keep looking? Love these "Correct" 100% rotiserrie resto mods on eBay. Don't get me started on the others on that site.

Wrong headrests...straight instead of curved...too late a car for straight. Tag is fake IMO. Wrong Master cylinder and I could go on and on. :-X

Am I missing something? Why do cars like this go for the prices they do? What possibly could be usable? At least this had springs and exhaust hangers. Scrap for cars, here in Ohio is about $250 a ton. A bare body like this is about 600 lbs. That comes to around $75. A guy I know, here, where I live, bought a 6cyl. coupe to make a pro-touring car. He bought a Dynacorn body and stripped this car completely including VIN. The tail panel and 1/4s where already cut off when he got the car the rest was pure rust and not one iota usable. I thought there might be something I could use for my upcoming body work, so I looked at it. It was worse than this eBay car and he told me he wanted $700 for it. Needless to say, it is still sitting at his house.

Restoration / Order of assembly when painting car
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:07:37 PM »
Excuse my ignorance on this topic. I have never done this extensive paint work before. I may have read here, but worth hearing from those who have been through this. I am about to have body work done and painted if money holds out. my question: Should I have front sheetmetal hung on and painted and try and raise subframe back under car once home from the shop(I believe this is how assembly line did it)? Or, Have subframe installed and leave front sheetmetal off until all related work with front is done before installing sheetmetal? Or, should I have all areas "cut-in" and not paint car until all mechanical (engine/wiring etc..) is completed and then have body painted as a whole? Have subframe and sheetmetal installed and all painted and remove front end one home to do work on front areas(brakes/engine etc..? I want to know best and most cost effective as I don't have money to have shop do a lot of assembly although I will have them install glass and vinyl top and roofrail weatherstrip and headliner, I'm thinking at this point. I am sure body shop has an idea of how they would prefer, I just do not want to request something that is not practical or feasible. Thanks, knowledgeable CRGers.
