Oh gosh Chick, that is just incredible! To say the least. That is a car you would never get tired of just studying details and documenting. Thanks for sharing.

Aren't those the optional styled steel 14" rims for the SS?

lol, i posted the wrong pic, its updated now
Thanks Dave, Yea, that is what I am talking about, at least the B/M hood and traction bars. Just a little different.

Bullitt-Great idea on the license frames, but I am already ahead of you. I figured I would never know the selling dealer, but that will change soon at least ordering dealer with those docs coming available. There was a small Chev. Dealer, here, where I live, that went out of business around 1990? I acquired both a new Trunk/tail panel emblem and a metal license frame some time ago. It was called Owen Chevrolet.

Are heads set up for unleaded? If you mean with hardened seats, Yes.
Cropper sells racing fuel by the drum
I will experiment with fuel mixtures, but have no intention of de-tuneing ;)

Thanks guys. The part # CS165R is a exact replacement according to SpeedPro and as John Z points out.  I am very leery of anything made anymore with so much said about quality issues. I thought this cam would be OK, then had doubts and wondered if I should get something else. The engine shop, Cropper Racing Engines in Flemingsburg, Ky. did the machining and assembly work.
They have a good reputation and do a lot of serious round track work. The owner said he would have done it different and said I would not be happy with my engine since I did not lower compression and go with a "newer" up to date grind. I explained that if I wanted something different than stock, I would have built something with more cubes, but I wanted to have a stocker like just out of the factory and I would deal with the compression and other restraints this build has. He said it will not run unless I use 103 octane racing gas. I have read other posts that guys have mixed 1/4 103 with 3/4 93 pump gas. Any suggestions? Would you run cam straight up or retarded or advanced? I planned on straight up.

General Discussion / Made Contact with Some Previous Owners Today

Vince, you really started something. I have to tell you, but I do not want to Hi-Jack your thread. After reading about your chasing down of your components, It planted a "seed". I posted a pic on Craigslist last night of my flamed car asking if anyone knew any information about the car? Already, today, just minutes ago, a guy called and told me he owned the car around 1977-78. He traded it to a High School buddy for a Nova. He gave me that guys name as well. I am thinking that the guy (Nova owner) sold it to the guy I got the car from. I spoke with that owner back in the fall after an old friend gave me his name and the lead. This guy (one who had car when I found it)told me he traded a motorcycle for the Camaro. You see, when I found the car, I already had the Blue one and spent everything I had on that car buying parts each week. So, when the flamed car came along, I did not have the money. My best friend, at the time, bought it and I paid him back. He had the car put in his name, so that is where the trail ended for so many years. Now, I have contacted the guy who had car when I found it and the owner 2 before, I believe? and have a name of the guy in between. This is getting interesting. this guy I talked to today said the guy he bought it from may have been the original owner, but he could not remember his name. He also has only one picture of the car from when he owned it.
Followup:
Just after I posted, I did a person search of the name the caller gave me today who he traded for the Nova. First person I called- BINGO! He sold it to the guy I got it from. He even had the sales tax receipt in front of him when I called as he had a cop friend who was trying to search down the VIN. How about that? He read the VIN, yes, the same as my car. He gave me an email and said he had more stories and the original add when he tried to sell the car in the "Wheeler Dealer", one of those add mags. printed on newspaper type paper that you see in convenient stores. He said, you know that is a 375 horse car, right? My car had 2 fuel lines, but a curved neck radiator. I always thought it was a 325 car although I have a 375 going back in. He thought there was a story about the original owner had some connections with the dealer and did some shady deal where they swapped out the engine when new, like Yenko did. I do not know and still looking for clues. He said the engine was "tired" when he got it and he put a 402 in it. He believes he scrapped the original engine. Will keep up on this.

Oh man, those pics are precious. It really gets my blood going when we can go back in the day and see through each one's "window" of the life, lol. I have a new SpeedPro LS6, L72, L78 replacement cam that I planned on using in my build. With so much posted (on other sites) about problems with newer cams, I thought I would get some opinions before installing. I have heard a lot of  newer cams have hardness issues and inferior metal today. A lot of castings made in China, etc...Just don't want to put "junk" together. Thanks CRG.

A couple of comments: Sad ending, Vince. I lost my job of 15 years at 40 years old went back and got a Bachelors degree. That and $1 will buy me a cup of coffee. When you lost your job, it sounds like you could/should have started a detective agency with your prowess for tracking down information. You said you recently came upon the phone number of the buyer of your car from 2009, how do you keep track of that stuff?? I can't find a phone number after, say, a day!!?lol

Vince, That is awesome, to say the least. I really dig these tales and what tenacity it took, but success in the end. Just love it. Make sure and post us some pics when you have time. I am especially interested in 69 BB Camaros...High horse even better! ;)

We will reopen the shirt site in the spring.  We are also planning on doing sweat shirts.
Steve

Steve, Good to know there will be another opportunity to get a shirt. When you state that you are planning on doing sweat shirts, do you mean ONLY sweat shirts? or in addition to T-shirts? I am kinda hot blooded and I am sweating as I write. I need something light weight. I will get a sweat too...still have memories of this past winter, brrr!
