General Discussion / "Old Yeller" 69 featured on home page
« on: April 06, 2014, 04:53:49 AM »
I had to take a double look. There it was and is, my Daytona Yellow 69 featured on the home page, wow! This is a rough car mind you, but it does have a story. I bought the 2 69's in 79 at 18, many here know, fast forward to 1985. I had been married 3 years now, no kids yet. This is before internet and the plethora of reproduction parts. Every week, here in Ohio, a publication called the Trad'in Post came out on Thursdays. This and swap meets where the primary way of finding cars and parts for most. I would always pick one up and go over it through my lunch break. There were many sections, as it was like a modern Craigslist. There was a section for cars sorted by year, an engine and drivetrain section and body/interior section. I always was on the hunt for Camaro parts. In the body parts section was an ad for a dash pad and a factory tach for 69 Camaro. I called, although skeptical as many times it would be a goose chase only to find it was not what the seller said. The owner, after some talk, told me he had the whole car. He had removed the engine and trans, glass, interior and had them in his house. I made arraignments to look at car after I got off work. it was dark by the time I got there and the car was under a tarp. To make matters worse, the guy did not have any keys and had a legal name change as he was now a black Muslim. I began to wonder if the car was stolen, but he presented the documents to show his legal name change and to show his old name on title. He wanted $200 for the car, $200 for the engine. At the time automatic tellers where fairly new and there was a $200 limit of withdrawal allowed. I went and got the $200 and loaded all I could into a station wagon I brought. Friday we got the title tranferred. Saturday, a buddy with a trailer went down and helped me get the car. I was going to part it out. I did not need another 69, I figured. My buddy convinced me to put it back on the road and I drove it to work for a few years after putting it all back together. I did not buy the engine as that was not important at the time(Uhg). The car was unusual as it was ordered with 307, 4 speed, U17 guages, rear antenna, manual N44, 76 paint and 711 interior, blk vinyl top, D80 stripes. I hastily put together a flat top 350 I had (we called them grenade motors as you never knew when they would go boom) A piston skirt broke and it made a lot of noise. Out came that engine and a 307 I had out of a 70 Camaro went in. It ran ok, but the first night home(2nd shift) the lifters got real noisy. I checked the oil and it was empty. It did not hurt the engine and I kept a close eye on the oil from there on. I kept jugs of used oil in the back floor as the rings must have been stuck. It did not smoke. I ended up putting another 350 together and that is what is in it today. It is fitting the car is in this month's feature. It is a 3E Norwood car, but clearly by the vin, and some components (rear dated 1st week of April) that it was in my guesstimation completed around the 7th of April. The car still has most of its original paint and like the others, is part of the family. With the exception of the engine and master cylinder and hood, most everything else is as born with. It is kind of a turd, but my turd and a lot of folks at the couple of shows I do attend, flock to it and look it over and pass by the shiny restored ones including two COPOs that friends of mine have. In hindsight, I wish I could have bought them all back then. We were struggling, money wise, being newly weds and having a house, but it was a bargain at $200, even then, and I knew I couldn't pass it up. I never had the extra funds to do much with it, so it stays as is for now. The 350 has blackjack headers, General Kinetics .483 lift solid, 2.02 heads. At one point, I had a tunnel ram on the car and it would flat bury the 7k tach! Thanks CRG for the feature.

Here it is: Could it be the earliest COPO?

Restoration / Deluxe Door Panel Repair 69
« on: March 28, 2014, 03:19:29 AM »
My Deluxe interior door panel has a crack in the arm rest. Can it be repaired? Has anyone had experience with doing this? I have heard a lot of cons about the replacement panels. I am a long way from getting to this part of resto, but thought I would do my homework now. Also lower carpet was ate up by a rat. This can be replaced successfully and reasonably, right? Or should I just look for another panel?

Restoration / Order of assembly when painting car
« on: March 12, 2014, 08:07:37 PM »
Excuse my ignorance on this topic. I have never done this extensive paint work before. I may have read here, but worth hearing from those who have been through this. I am about to have body work done and painted if money holds out. my question: Should I have front sheetmetal hung on and painted and try and raise subframe back under car once home from the shop(I believe this is how assembly line did it)? Or, Have subframe installed and leave front sheetmetal off until all related work with front is done before installing sheetmetal? Or, should I have all areas "cut-in" and not paint car until all mechanical (engine/wiring etc..) is completed and then have body painted as a whole? Have subframe and sheetmetal installed and all painted and remove front end one home to do work on front areas(brakes/engine etc..? I want to know best and most cost effective as I don't have money to have shop do a lot of assembly although I will have them install glass and vinyl top and roofrail weatherstrip and headliner, I'm thinking at this point. I am sure body shop has an idea of how they would prefer, I just do not want to request something that is not practical or feasible. Thanks, knowledgeable CRGers.

As some of you have followed, my car's restoration had stalled when I was having difficulty finding someone to do the body work on my 69. After a plea and post on here and several supportive members coming forward, I believe things are back on track. A heartfelt thanks to all who have helped. One member, Buenymayor, told me about his body guy and sent me pics and helped me make contact with , mrls6, in Ft. Wayne,Ind. I had a good feeling about this guy from the first contact. Today, Buenymayor and I met at his house in downtown Buena Vista, Ind. and drove up to see his car and to give me a chance to meet mrls6 in person. We all hit it off and we all had a lot more in common than just our love of Camaros. Arrangements have been made for my car to be started on in April. He(mrls6) is finishing up on Buenymayor's car right new. Thanks CRG and get ready to follow this restoration as things progress. Yea, I am nervous about the money holding out, but I only have this one life and don't want to have regrets, so will press forward and try and join the ranks of restored correctly Camaro owners. Now, I am in S.W. Ohio and Ft. Wayne is not in my backyard, but mrls6 impressed me with his knowledge and desire and ability to do the job right. So, looks like I have a plan. Wish me luck! ;)

General Discussion / Owner and I believe this to be a Z (69)
« on: March 04, 2014, 09:55:58 PM »
This new listing for a hulk appears to be a H.P. model and the 4 leafs give credence as a Z, as owner points out. Also mentioned are that it has Muncie speedo hole and manual floor shift hole. Not mentioned are: RH rear dual exhaust hanger, firewall holes for RS and Ducted Hood, Tail Pan RS Holes, May have spoiler deck springs too. Maybe we can inquire and get the hidden Vin for database? If you (members) are going to Charlotte Autofair, it could be checked out closer. I bet Cook could get this one fixed up with his talent, lol, not me though. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Camaro-z28-69-camaro-body-for-parts-or-race-car-NO-TITLE-/301114113216?forcerrptr=true&hash=item461bccbcc0&item=301114113216&pt=US_Cars_Trucks.
I forwarded it to member KERR, since he needs a roof.

Restoration / widow felts nos vs. A.Mrkt.
« on: March 01, 2014, 01:31:16 PM »
I have a chance to get some NOS outer window felts for a not too bad a price IMO. A couple of years ago, this would not have even been a question for me, but A. Mrkt. parts are improving, at least felts,I am told. As I understand, the show grade A.Market felts are pretty good, have come a long way in quality and accuracy and even have the rubber flap on the 1/4 felts. I have not seen these in person. I am a NOS kinda guy , but if the A/M is as good as claimed, I would go that route as funds are getting squeezed and other weatherstripping will be A/M. Along that thought, I planned on getting the higher priced latex weatherstripping. Here is what I'd like some feedback on: Anyone, here, that is a correctness freak and can give an opinion on the A/M quality, correctness, etc... to help me decide would be greatly appreciated. Also, any feedback regarding the latex vs.regular rubber drip molding and door/trunk weatherstrips, so I do not make the wrong purchases when that time comes appreciated as well.

Restoration / Are There Any "Off Limit" Areas in Your Restoration?
« on: February 23, 2014, 07:21:26 PM »
In a current response (in the decoding/numbers section) regarding the crayon markings behind rear seat, it got me thinking about this question. I am about to send my car off to the body shop. This comes with great trepidation, as it should. I have not been this scared of getting something I own "hacked" on since I got the ole' vasectomy. sorry TMI.lol. Anyway- Is there any area you tell your body guy or as a DIY, tell yourself, that you want it left original and untouched? The crayon marks behind the seat, mine has "X2" and barely readable, I am telling the shop to mask it off and do not sand, paint or touch that area. I, also, am making the same request for the hidden VIN on top of cowl and cowl trim tag. Please do not touch, strip, sand or paint these, just mask them off, I will instruct. What do you guys think? Are you in agreement? Is there anything else you would make sure is left original? Some might question, why are you doing this? It is kind of like the strip of bricks left at the Indy Brickyard, just to prove what is original under the pavement preserving a little of the past. I think for originality and posterity and as a connection or link to the car's past is why I am doing this. Those areas are only original once. 8)

General Discussion / Requesting Members Update Their Profile
« on: February 20, 2014, 06:18:00 PM »
:) :) :) I  and others may like to know where members reside/live, especially when wanting to find others that live in the same area-city,state- to build friendships, notify of events/local shows, have a source of other cars and parts to have close by to look at and compare and a host of other good camaraderie. If that is your goal, as well, please go to your profile page and update/edit your location line. Thank you,CRG. ;) ;) ;)

Hey Gang,
This is a 3 part question that I feel is connected and relevant enough to keep as one thread. If you reply to one aspect of the 3 questions, please put a #(1-3) before your response, so others know what question you are responding to.
I'll start off by saying my car is more of a passion or love affair and its restoration has more to do with its sentimental value and memories it made for me as a teen. Having shared that, a lot of my hobbies have an intrinsic component, meaning they tend to be good investments that seem to justify the enjoyment I get while knowing they appreciate is comforting too. That is why I don't collect lint or suppositories, lol. I share this because the business side of me says to protect the value of the investment, but money is not everything especially in regards to my cars. I am not looking for replies that say things like,it's your car, make it the way you want, or you will never recoup the money, so what does it matter. I am more looking to get pragmatic, constructive feedback on some questions that have been nagging me of late regarding both aspects of parts and restoration direction and overall value.I know these questions do not have a simple yes/no. It will be a collaboration of experience that I hope to draw an understanding of some decisions I need to resolve before I proceed further in my restoration. So you swap meet types, and guys who have been down the" money pit highway" of restoration, weigh in on what you see and experience. You guys and your opinions matter and the experiences and view points are appreciated, so here goes:

1) Parts- I have many NOS parts acquired years ago before prices rocketed. I also have many "scarce" items like original curved neck BB radiator, endura bumper/jack etc...My car does not have the "coveted" paper work or matching engine. I kind of relish the fact I have these original parts, but realize they may not affect overall value of the car once finished. I also realize I could sell some of these items for a substantial profit and use the money towards fixing my body and paint. There are a couple of sheetmetal parts I still need. Would you sell the NOS stuff and get reproduction (read all the stories about fitting), sell radiator and such and get repro to replace? The couple of items needed are a LH fender and deck lid. Would you look for NOS items since everything else you already have is NOS, so you can boast no repro body panels, or mix the parts or sell the NOS?

2) This has to do with reproduction parts used values ( a vague area, I find). I scour the web on occasion looking for parts, like many here. Most items that I need now are available as reproduction and most likely the only way to go as far as cost and availability, like rubber items and some chrome stuff. Is there a rule about prices to pay for repro parts sold by private parties, left over from their resto? I ask because many prices for these repro parts from sellers are as high or higher than going to the vendor? I mean, this stuff is not hard to come by, it can be bought any day of the week, so why the high price? Is there a rule ( a depreciation) applied or accepted for such parts that guys, here, might have a consensus? How about stuff that is new, but bolted on only, sometimes never left the shop or showroom? Is that still a new part or is it like when a car is driven off the lot and has some depreciation? If you are trying to buy a repro part, like an outer door handle, how can you tell if it is the $34 pair or the $90 pr. and if the person does not know, what price would you offer not knowing?

3) This regards overall car's value after restoration. I have read on this site some opinions about values of restored cars stating it does not affect the value of the car overall if NOS vs. Reproduction sheetmetal (I assume other type parts as well) are used. You will not recoup your costs (for NOS). So, why use these parts? I have my own personal reasons, like I do not want/like repro parts or want Chinese stuff on my beloved car. The reality is, I will have to eventually put some items that are repro. So how much repro does it make a difference in value? Should the whole car be repro, because it does not affect value? If you considered a purchase, how does the following statements affect value? "car has all original panels",Car has mixture of original and NOS panels", "Car has new sheet metal" Now, I am not talking about how desirable or what you would prefer, I am seeking how it affects the overall value. Should parts replaced  be as little as possible, protecting integrity and  originality of car? Unlike the 1st question of should I keep it all GM opposed to selling off parts and going the repro route? I am looking for % of repro parts vs total overall value to car opinions here?

General Discussion / want a Big Block car?
« on: January 27, 2014, 12:04:36 AM »
I have only the pics in the ad as evidence, but I feel this could be a real big block car. A car this rough does not usually have someone changing heater core or disc brakes. Just my 2c for those wanting a project. It's too far away for me and I got my hands full with my own junk. http://www.ebay.com/itm/291064341092?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649 P.S. Ignore the fan shroud. I'll add, I'd rather have this one than the other 9 shiny fake SS396's on the site right now, from what I believe I see, just say'n...

Originality / 1969 Hurst Shifter Rods BB
« on: January 15, 2014, 07:27:13 PM »
Going through Hurst Shifters today and comparing some un-identified rods with known rods and wanting an opinion or confirmation of what I believe I have. Picture of rods shows starting with top rod and every other rod (positions 1 top,3&5going down)compared with other set I have (positions 2,4&6). 1,3,5 are the original rods off my 396 car. 2,4&6 rods are another identical length and shape set which I believe are BB rods, too. The second set has more threaded area on each rod and the shifter is dated 3-69. My car is a 12B 68, shifter is dated 6-68. The length of rods are 1-2=14 15/16 in.3-4=17 11/16in. rev=9 1/8in. (give or take 1/16in on each). Shifters show back nut I believe (according to AIM)is unique to BB shifters. Closest shifter in pic is off my car, 2nd in background is 3-69 shifter. Anyone want to comment based on their car or experience if I am right and have 2 sets of BB shifter/rods? Oh yea, I did extensive search on the site before posting and could not find an answer. Only marking on rods is a "D".
