Restoration / XT wheels Usage
« on: June 05, 2014, 02:44:25 AM »
I was reading the Ask CRG questions and a question about XT rims usage had the following answer: "COPO (Central Office Production Order) 427-engined cars, unless ordered with the ZJ7 rally wheel option or the COPO 9737 sport car option, came with the same wheels used on other non-rally 1969 SS cars, the 14x7 XT steel wheel. This same wheel was also used on Chevy II SS in 1969. We haven't looked beyond 1969 to determine later use"
Am I to understand that a SS/RS could not have XT rims by this answer? or is this rally statement directed to mean the rally wheel?

Decoding/Numbers / Zeroing in on X code start up
« on: May 29, 2014, 02:49:02 AM »
A couple of weeks ago, a topic regarding rear end dates was posted. This resulted in a few PM's by JKZ27 & myself discussing when the changeover to X codes occurred. We both have 12B Nor. cars. After observing several 12B tags with vins and doing my own research over some time now, I'll add, I will or can almost with certainty determine that the X codes started with the Vin # 560000 or very close. Certainly more data will narrow this down and confirm or at least conclude and then be held as fact, which is what WE are all about. My following examples to bear this out are: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Camaro-SS-1969-Camaro-SS-350-Muncie-4-speed-AC-disc-brakes-numbers-matching-V8-hotrod-/301197332895?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4620c2919f&item=301197332895&pt=US_Cars_Trucks#ht_102wt_1312  This car is 532 Vins before the 560000 and has no X code and http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=3257.15 a post about an X55 which is 1026 after this 560000 vin. Now, I know that is over 1500 cars between these examples and as more is found I will keep records. I have never seen an example of any X code with a vin starting with 55xxxx to date.
http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=1688.0 This is another, 573 after 56xxxx with X code...Now within a 1000 vins 500 on each side of 56xxxx.

Asking for a guy who has an original X22 car and wants to run headers. I told him that he probably will not be able to use his backdrive linkage. Is this still the case or are there headers that work with the linkage? I am hoping that there are not as he said he would sell me the linkage. Fingers crossed. It is a 4 speed car with a Big Block.

Decoding/Numbers / CE coded warranty engines
« on: May 13, 2014, 01:23:28 AM »
A few questions that have been on my mind about warranty engines: 1) If a number, like CE0707, (just a random example) were deciphered, would that be the 707th warranty engine total for year 70  to include all warranty engines or specifically just that particular type, like the 707th L78 or DZ depending on which block it is stamped on? 2) A 70 engine could be in a 69 car, right, it was still under warranty? 3) would that CE be a short block only or long block or did CE include both?

General Discussion / Ohio guys -looking for info on this decal
« on: May 04, 2014, 03:07:18 AM »
This was on my 69 12B car when purchased pre-1980. Thought someone, here, may shed some knowledge about this club? ;)

Originality / N44 in non HP 69s
« on: April 23, 2014, 01:31:11 AM »
My Yellow 69 has N44. I have conversed with Jon Mello about this car. It is a 3E Nor 307 4speed Saginaw, drum brake car. I am looking for other non Z or SS car owners with N44 (confirmed) to see just how unusual this option occurrence is. RPO production sheet shows 2161 with this option (non Z, SS). This is a manual steering car also. Other N44 owners chime in please. Also, did all SS cars receive N44? My L48 car has manual steering and it appears to be a Non-N44 setup. I guarantee these cars are untampered originals. Thanks CRG. :)

General Discussion / Made Contact with Some Previous Owners Today
« on: April 14, 2014, 10:07:07 PM »
Vince, you really started something. I have to tell you, but I do not want to Hi-Jack your thread. After reading about your chasing down of your components, It planted a "seed". I posted a pic on Craigslist last night of my flamed car asking if anyone knew any information about the car? Already, today, just minutes ago, a guy called and told me he owned the car around 1977-78. He traded it to a High School buddy for a Nova. He gave me that guys name as well. I am thinking that the guy (Nova owner) sold it to the guy I got the car from. I spoke with that owner back in the fall after an old friend gave me his name and the lead. This guy (one who had car when I found it)told me he traded a motorcycle for the Camaro. You see, when I found the car, I already had the Blue one and spent everything I had on that car buying parts each week. So, when the flamed car came along, I did not have the money. My best friend, at the time, bought it and I paid him back. He had the car put in his name, so that is where the trail ended for so many years. Now, I have contacted the guy who had car when I found it and the owner 2 before, I believe? and have a name of the guy in between. This is getting interesting. this guy I talked to today said the guy he bought it from may have been the original owner, but he could not remember his name. He also has only one picture of the car from when he owned it.
Followup:
Just after I posted, I did a person search of the name the caller gave me today who he traded for the Nova. First person I called- BINGO! He sold it to the guy I got it from. He even had the sales tax receipt in front of him when I called as he had a cop friend who was trying to search down the VIN. How about that? He read the VIN, yes, the same as my car. He gave me an email and said he had more stories and the original add when he tried to sell the car in the "Wheeler Dealer", one of those add mags. printed on newspaper type paper that you see in convenient stores. He said, you know that is a 375 horse car, right? My car had 2 fuel lines, but a curved neck radiator. I always thought it was a 325 car although I have a 375 going back in. He thought there was a story about the original owner had some connections with the dealer and did some shady deal where they swapped out the engine when new, like Yenko did. I do not know and still looking for clues. He said the engine was "tired" when he got it and he put a 402 in it. He believes he scrapped the original engine. Will keep up on this.

I have a new SpeedPro LS6, L72, L78 replacement cam that I planned on using in my build. With so much posted (on other sites) about problems with newer cams, I thought I would get some opinions before installing. I have heard a lot of  newer cams have hardness issues and inferior metal today. A lot of castings made in China, etc...Just don't want to put "junk" together. Thanks CRG.

General Discussion / And There It Goes...
« on: April 11, 2014, 06:18:42 PM »
...I will miss you, X22. Yes, this is the beginning of the Body Process. Mr. Birdwell (MRLS6) has it in his very capable hands and I have full faith and confidence that he will do my car justice. Praise the Lord that he was put in my life to do this special job. Thanks to Buenymayor for putting us together,  as MRLS6 did his car also. Wish me luck and updates will be coming as work progresses. Pic of my car leaving just an hour ago heading to Ft. Wayne, In.

Restoration / Aftermarket 69 Vinyl Top Moldings
« on: April 07, 2014, 07:17:44 PM »
Can anyone give an opinion on how good (accurate) the aftermarket stainless vinyl top moldings are? Is there one brand or vendor I should look for over another? Anyone have extra rear pieces (2) they can spare? I seem to be missing a piece(1) on rear will have to check which side.
