There were many variations - applying the stripes to a spinning driveshaft wasn't a "precision" operation.

The shafts were rotating when stripes applied?

I've heard the drivers side gas tank top was another area to look at.

Restoration / 67 front door curve - how to
« on: May 20, 2013, 06:55:14 PM »
I'm getting ready to install a new door skin on a 67. I have the correct tools for it but this will be a first time I'll be doing a Camaro door which has the inward curved edge at the front top. Anyone with experience have any pointers to ensure the edge folds nicely around the inward curve? I usually fold only a couple of 16ths per pass with a hammer and dolly to ease the folded edge into shape but the curve has me concerned on how to best approach it.

Thank you in advance,
Mike

I assume there were more than one addressographs running at any time to account for some with and some without mistamps?

Here is something else to look for....
The door skin front section that folds over the door edge...does that have the extended square flange in the center like an original door?
Replacement skins I have seen do not have that so I can only assume a repro door doesn't have it either.

Restoration / Re: Correct 67 radiator tag
« on: May 16, 2013, 02:15:40 AM »
The vendor called me and said he can't do the straight edge tags like 68 and 69 due to setup costs. The stepped edge ones for 67 are what he wants to concentrate on being he is producing them already. He asked me to pass along which tags would be most commonly requested so I suspect he will focus on the popular ones to recover the cost of tooling quickly.
I'm in for 2 67 BB tags (UN & UO) and I know Bob is interested in a UO. Anyone else interested? This is just a query for interest and no commitment.

Restoration / Re: Trunk lock orientation issue...? (67)

My 4B-LOS and 5B-NOR 67's with their original rear R/S panels have the same knockout as your posted photo. The actual keyway notch in the lock itself when mounted is located towards the bottom right side and the key position is vertical. In the drawing it shows as Type 2 late model so I suspect the drawing is wrong for period correctness being you have an earlier body with the same knockout shape as my later period body.

Restoration / Re: 68 camaro grill NOS
« on: May 13, 2013, 10:55:31 PM »
I just looked at a 68 NOS RS grill I have still in the original box collecting dust I bought in the early 80's from Chevy and there is no P/N embedded in the plastic mold on the grill. The headlight covers only have the P/N on the GM stickers.

A non-abrasive method of rust removal is to use a length of plastic pipe. Cap one end, drop the driveshaft in. Fill with de-rusting solution, cap. A few days later, as clean as can be.

Gesh...I use that method for restoring antique gun barrels prior to parkerizing. I never thought of using it on something like this!

That looks pretty darn good. If that were mine I'd go with it.

Simplest way to restore it? Have a new tube installed. Painting a rusted 'shaft silver doesn't get the job done.
I agree...this is how I had the one restored on my 67 ragtop. The original tube had a ding in it when it dropped one day racing that caused a slight vibration in the stick. Once I got the restored shaft I gave it a coat of Imron clear and once installed the vibration was completely gone and it looked good and correct once the stripes were added back.
Besides, when it is under the car, who really studies the shaft in detail outside for looking for stripes unless you are going for a 1000 point event.

Maintenance / Re: Quadrajet accelerator pump problem
« on: May 08, 2013, 11:35:56 PM »
The first thing that comes to mind is the accelerator pump check ball hung up. The reason it seems to work with the engine running is possibly due to the slight vacuum in the area so atmospheric pressure will act on the fuel level in an attempt to equalize.

Good deal!
The brackets were dipped which likely accounts for the finish you see.

This topic sure was an eye opener. I thought it was done with the nose assembled to get alignment.
In the spirit of trying to duplicate (intentional or not) mass production results on a restore car this is one area where I'll put the stripe back on with the nose assembled (the base coat will go on unassembled). I'm sure the viewing public will understand overspray, paint tabs, etc.....but a misaligned paint stripe....well....that may not be too easily accepted and be more of a sign on sloppy work it they don't line up.
When I look at the paint runs in the door jambs, runs on the firewall header, not so perfect seam sealer finishing in the trunk weather strip wells, etc....and compare to today's higher quality automotive finished standards, the cars of yesteryear sure look sloppy.  :'(

Thanks for the inputs!

Ed you be thumpin'

Boy, no kidding. I can hear Jason coming home 5 miles away by two things.

1. Boom, Boom, Boom
2. The exhaust. The 427 is VERY loud.

Ed

Ed,

You can admit it......the car is really a 6 cylinder and the extra amp in the trunk has an iPod with a 427 recording taken from a Pinks All Out session going through it that is synced to the gas peddle.  ;)
