General Discussion / 67 L78 for sale
« on: March 19, 2014, 01:03:20 AM »
Came across this car. The trim tag looks OK to me. Good project car but to bad it doesn't have the original motor.

Interesting...another rare care but this time 'unearthed'. It's not a Camaro but it falls into the catagory of our last discussion about barn finds.

I can replicate that white dust  layer by shooting dry white primer into the air and letting it settle on the car.  ;)

General Discussion / Were 'Pacesetter' VIN's period different?
« on: February 22, 2014, 02:40:32 PM »
I came across this on eBay (  http://www.ebay.com/itm/Chevrolet-Camaro-PACESETTER-1967-camaro-pacesetter-ss-rs-convertible-frame-off-resto-396-c-i-rare-/321330484032?forcerrptr=true&hash=item4ad0ca1340&item=321330484032&pt=US_Cars_Trucks ) and noticed two things about the car.

1- Trim Tag - the area where the interior color code is stamped has the character embossed above to what looks between the letters B&O (in BODY) so the left margin placement for that code is way off when compared to others of that date period. I can't see it clearly due to the small posted image but it looks like the seller has all the embossed characters cleaned of paint to stand out.

2- The VIN listed as N155815 (the engine is said to be stamped N15581 but that can be an ad error) seems too early a sequence for a 05D car. My 05B NOR is N218XXX so the Pacesetter VIN sequence period doesn't look right if cars were issued VIN's sequentially.

The trim tag interior color position stamping warrants closer inspection but were Pacesetter cars assigned VIN numbers differently to cause an earlier VIN to be in a later body build?

Originality / 67 BB engine lift hooks vs. LOS Camaros
« on: February 02, 2014, 04:37:41 PM »
I have spent a several hours researching the web and CRG archives on the subject of engine lift brackets use in 1967 especially with big blocks. I have read John Z's replies and viewed his pictures of the types of cradles used before changing to the hooks permanently installed on blocks in 1968. His articles look to be geared based on his experiences with the NOR plant. My 67 5B NOR 396 never had hooks and after reading the CRG archives I fully accept why they are not there. But it is not conclusive what was done at the LOS plant. My 67 LOS 396 I got from the original owner has the brackets on since I had the car. The below pictures shows the brackets and the years worth of dust, rodent food leftovers and grease built up on them to attest to how long they have been on the car. The car still has the original motor mounts on them (the ones that are so-called defective) and never appears to have been out of the car.
Did LOS install these and leave them in place. as part of their process? After all LOS had a different means of body drop and nose painting compared to the NOR plant and I am wondering if the brackets left in place was a part of those differences. Any 67 LOS BB owners out there and if so do you have brackets?

Thanks,
Mike

General Discussion / Supposedly 302 Mustang 'Barn Find'
« on: January 07, 2014, 01:26:33 AM »
I wonder how many of the new 'barn find' trends we hear about are just plain exaggerated stories.
One day I'll post a picture of my 'garage find' (mine)....I have the now rotted flat tires (I put on the car in 1980) to prove it was sitting that long  ;)

General Discussion / Production month brackets
« on: November 28, 2013, 01:09:12 AM »
I'm curious what would be considered early, midyear and late months for a production run? After reading many articles and seeing these terms used often, I can't help but wonder what the months would be.

Happy Thanksgiving,
Mike

General Discussion / FYI...OSHA changes related to MSDS sheets
« on: November 15, 2013, 07:58:13 PM »
I figured many of us read MSDS sheets when dealing with paints, chemicals, etc... for our restorations. I received this at work today and figured I would pass it along so you are informed in case you are looking for MSDS sheets in the future.

*************
Effective December 1, 2013, new changes to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration's (OSHA) Hazard Communication Standard will bring the U.S. into alignment with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). This change will help provide a common and coherent approach to classifying chemicals and communicating hazard information on labels and safety data sheets.
WHAT’S CHANGING
Under the new GHS alignment, material safety data sheets (MSDS) will remain the backbone of Hazard Communication Standard compliance. They will, however, get a name and format change. Effective December 1, 2013, GHS will drop the M from MSDS. Material safety data sheets will now be categorized simply as Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
Although the information will essentially be the same, the SDS will be modified to classify all products for health and physical hazards based on the GHS criteria. More importantly, SDSs will have a standardized 16 section format with a required ordering of sections.

General Discussion / Camaro recall notices link
« on: November 09, 2013, 05:29:27 PM »
Came across this while searching for the Quadrajet recall around 1970 and found it interesting to read. So far I haven't found the recall info for the Quadrajets due to the hot slot issue. I thought it was in 1970. The notices do mention the engine mounts recall info.
Anyhow...interesting info no less.

General Discussion / OT- Ceiling mounted garage heater placement
« on: November 01, 2013, 06:36:30 PM »
I'm installing a 5KW electric heater to the ceiling in my attached and insulated 1 car garage (no windows) to keep the Camaro's and my ageing bones semi-warm. Not having any friends who heat their garages, I am having one heck of a time determining the correct location.  Facing the garage door or away. I have done a LOT of web browsing and see too many conflicting opinions and manufactures documentation is vague. One thing is for sure is it will be scraping the outside wall. It's just to face the garage door or away.
  Any folks here have heaters?

Thanks you,
Mike

Originality / Right top door hinge sealer type
« on: October 06, 2013, 07:17:49 PM »
Do you know what the correct sealer type is for the top right door hinge on a '67 (not sure if 68 or 69 are the same) ? I don't remember if it was a caulk type seam sealer or the rope sealer to seal the expose square recessed mounting nut hole seen from the top edge of the hinge. I *think* it was seam sealer like that applied from a caulk gun.  This is on the '67 I am restoring so I looked at my '67 original and I can't make out if it is a rope type sealer or not and I don't want to distrub the paint on it to find out.

Thank you,
Mike

Restoration / Did 67 door skin edges have seam sealer?
« on: October 03, 2013, 04:20:27 PM »
I'm at the stage of readying the car for final primer and was getting the door skin folded edge ready to seam seal. Normally I look at the unrestored '67 I have to get what is correct for finishing but was surprised to see no seam sealer on either door along the folded edge. The skins on the car I am working now have been replaced and I don't remember if there was sealer or not because I assumed the other '67 provided the answer. I looked at a few Camaros in my area and they to have had the skins replaced and sealer applied. The difference between the two '67s I have is one is NOR (being restored again) and the original is LOS (original).
It will be more for visual function because I used the 3M epoxy adhesive to mount the skins and put enough in to flow out the edges when rolled so I know it is sealed inside. I searched the CRG archives but could not find a conclusive answer.

Thank you,
Mike
