Restoration / Source for convertible ram rebuilds?
« on: September 29, 2015, 11:05:09 PM »
Hello list,

I need to have the two rams for my 67 convertible rebuilt being one leaks intermittently. Is there a recommended source for this type of service that someone has used? I see replacements for sale on E-Bay but I'd rather have the original ones rebuilt. Also, the clear hydraulic lines (well...yellow now from age) are still original and even though they show no signs of leakage or stress cracks I am wondering if they should be replaced being they are old now. It's one of those things where you try to maintain a fine balance between what to keep intact for the sake of originality and yet be practical in maintenance due to wear/age. I assume these are nylon lines and they get brittle with age? What would you do?

Thank you,
Mike

Thought you may find this of interest. I'm not sure how this will kill original car prices however.

Restoration / Most accurate 67 door sill moulding?
« on: February 27, 2015, 07:56:46 PM »
Hello list,

Has anyone purchased door sill plates for a 67 recently or know of a close-to-accuracy as possible set with rivets?

Thank you in advance,
Mike

General Discussion / OT: American muscle rusting in Japan
« on: January 21, 2015, 03:08:23 AM »
A little OT, but here are some classic American iron just rusting away in Japan. There are two Camaro's shamefully rotting in with the bunch.

Such a shame!

General Discussion / Recommed 67 R/S lower mouldings?
« on: November 28, 2014, 08:24:52 PM »
Because the R/S door/quarter/fender molding is old and pitting I am looking to replace it for the '67 convertible that's under restoration. Are all the reproductions I see available (examples: Classic Industries or D&R) the same quality?
I see one set that uses metal clips to secure the molding to the lower door instead of nylon so I'll reuse the original nylon ones.

Thank You,
Mike

Originality / 67 L35 black lid wing nut shape
« on: November 09, 2014, 10:50:17 PM »
Hello Group,

I did search the CRG archives and couldn't find a definitive answer to my curiosity on these shapes.
Attached is an image of the two different style wing nuts used on my 67 L35 Camaros.
As you can see the LOS shape differs from the NOR shape. This is not to be confused with the
one available today that has a more pronounced bulge in the wing tab shapes similar to the NOR nut.
Theses have been on the cars since I owned them since 1980. The archive did mention the shape of the nut on the LOS
was a correct for that period but the one from NOR is of question. I'm not sure if this is due to an engineering change in shape, the wrong one, or just a vendor variance (I doubt the vendor would change a shape without approval from GM).

Can anyone shed some info on this? Is the NOR one correct? I also attached a picture from Ricks that has the same shape of the NOR nut.
My air cleaners are the black lid type used till mid '67 so no chrome nuts were used.

Thank You,
Mike

There always a thief willing to take your pride and joy. No matter how fast an old car is, if I see mine going down the street without me driving it,  I can assure it will not outrun a well placed .223  ;)

Restoration / Accurate taper mono springs?
« on: September 22, 2014, 11:27:29 PM »
I know in the past there were no reproduction mono springs with the correct taper per the CRG archives.
Does anyone know if there exists a true copy of a tapered mono these days? I have browsed and see replacements but no word if it is tapered both in thickness and length like the factor springs. My car is sagging 3/4" more on one side compared to the opposite and I can see the spring has flattened nearest the rear mounting perch.

Thank You,
Mike

General Discussion / Got Rust?
« on: September 21, 2014, 06:38:32 AM »
I've seen some rust buckets in my time but this one takes the lead role.
Looking at the grass below the car through the rusted floor boards reminded me of the Flintstones car.

Restoration / Extent of firewall coverage with body paint
« on: August 26, 2014, 03:10:04 PM »
I'm at the point of spraying the door jambs, underside of trunk lid and lip and firewall prior to body spray. How low did the robotics spray paint on the firewall prior to blackout?
Were the bottom of the "saddle bags" and the angular looking lower fender support covered in body color too prior to blackout? This is for a 67 NOR car.

Thank You,
Mike

General Discussion / And so the hood closed
« on: May 04, 2014, 08:03:24 PM »
Today I attended a car show here on Long Island to see the 50th Mustang anniversary show and browse the swap meet. There were Mustangs in their own part of the grounds and surrounding was a mixture of all other car brands.
I had seen a small grouping of first gen Camaros so I strolled over and while looking over the cars I held small conversations with each owner. Sure, some had SS emblems that were questionable if it was a real SS, and there was a 69 that had Z28 markings and upon closer examination of the tag, draped with an unusual amount of thick black paint, I did make out an X11. I'm not a Z28 fan but I'm sure X11 is not a Z28 or an SS396. I had seen some discrepancies on the cars except one SS350 that looked authentic enough from the trim tag and other body parts. I'm certainly not playing the Camaro sentinel so I wasn't going to take picture of tags and stampings even if it was a public event out of respect of privacy. Of particular though was one owner who had seen me walking around and talking with the other Camaro owners. I had spotted his car and was making my way towards his eventually. When I started to approach his car he closed the hood and walked away. It was a ’69 Z28 with 302 on the hood.  My wife asked what I had said to him because she said he looked annoyed and I told her not one word.  I then realized it must have been the CRG shirt I was wearing and perhaps he knows of this group. Sure makes my wonder!

It will be interesting what others experience when wearing their CRG shirts this year, the year when CRG moves from life on the web to live people walking around.
