General Discussion / Another 67 L35 on eBay
« on: August 03, 2012, 02:45:30 PM »
Stumbled across this 67 396 ad today on e-bay. Looks like a cowl tag from trimtags.com because they have one flaw I have noticed in their tags as posted on their web site.
This isn't to say the car is a clone or fake but does raise an eye.

Restoration / Old vs. new style BB mounts
« on: July 18, 2012, 02:21:59 AM »
While replacing the motor mount bolts with new ones I noticed they are almost 1/2" shorter so the nuts don't have enough threads to properly hold.
The ones I removed were 4 1/2" grade 8 hardware bought ones I installed in the mid 80's along with the new motor mounts from Chevy at that time and the bolt length was just right.
Looking at my other L35 survivor that has the old style mounts (without the safety tabs) I see they are narrower so these bolts would fit if I use that type.
In keeping with restoring correctly down to the correct bolts I researched and see the old style mounts are made again as repos (without the safety tabs).
My drag days are long over so I was thinking of installing the older style mounts being I'll only be using the car for shows.
Has anyone else encountered this problem with the bolts and also does anyone use the repo 'old style' mounts?

Thank you in advance,
Mike

Restoration / 67 NOR body (rear) seam sealer color verification
« on: July 15, 2012, 12:07:50 AM »
I'm restoring my 5B NOR convertible and completed the underbody finish. The next stage is to apply the seam sealer but I wanted to verify which color is correct for 67 NOR Camaros.
I examined my 67 LOS 4B survivor and see the sealer color is black but looking at original sealer (small sample taken and split to see under the spatter paint) in the NOR trunk I see it is beige.
I am assuming the person applying the sealer to the trunk used the same gun to apply underneath so the color should be the same.
When I restored the car back in the 80's I replaced a lot of sheet metal so the original sealer was removed and replaced with the Eastwood product and painted black. Following the assembly article the sealer was applied after the body was primed but before the paint was applied so this time I'm going to let the sealer stay unpainted and let whatever overspray lands on it, stay. That should replicate what it looked like back in 67.
The seams I am interested in are in the rear undercarriage at the locations where the 1/4 drop downs and rear wheel tub meet...to along the bottom of the drop down and 1/4's meet....up to where the drop down meets the rear valance (the curved seam).
I have a tube of 3M 8505 beige that looks to be an exact match to the trunk sealer color. If any owners of NOR built 67's can confirm the color I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you,
Mike

General Discussion / Another 'survivor'
« on: July 14, 2012, 01:53:25 PM »
Came across this today and thought you may find it interesting as it lists the owner and car both as 'survivors'.

(Though the owner mentioned the Tet Offensive in 1967, it was actually in late Jan 1968)

Restoration / Radius rod color
« on: July 12, 2012, 02:13:20 AM »
I searched the CRG archives and didn't find the answer. What is the color of the 67 square radius rod?
The MacNeish Book specs state 30-60% black but I have seen real Chevy NOS ones that look gray and even the CRF article shows gray examples as well.
I painted mine black in the 80's and don't remember seeing any colors then as it had surface rust.
Looking at my 67 L35 with the round bar, that appears to have some traces of black paint still.

Mike

Originality / 67 mono springs use decals?
« on: July 03, 2012, 02:08:46 AM »
Did 67 mono springs use P/N decals or was the 'color code stripe' mentioned in 67 AIM UPC 4 B1 used as an identifier instead?
My 67 LOS survivor has the F41 suspension as evident by the front coil spring tag P/N 3912532 YJ I removed (looking for a place to duplicate it).
On the same car is the paint code stripe that shows a definite yellow color as shown in the attached image in addition to the smoke gray spring color.
If I cross referenced my numbers right, the mono spring should be 3925817 BY (12437, L35 & F41).
To date I have found no info for the 'color code stripe' summary so maybe this one if a first for CRG?
My thinking is a paint strip was used in 67 and then a decal in 68 and up.

Restoration / When were rear 'T' bolts installed?
« on: June 29, 2012, 11:32:45 PM »
I'm at the stage of getting ready to spray the 67 12 bolt rear. I had detailed it in the 80's (non painted bolts and other HW) and now will resort to the correct method of finish by spraying it entirely gloss black, including the 12 bolt cover bolts, though the pinion and bleeders will be masked. Were the 'T' bolts installed yet to get painted or did they come after painting. What about the vent tube?

General Discussion / John Z - comment please
« on: June 22, 2012, 06:59:24 PM »
John Z.

I found this picture on the web and was wondering if this was on the Fisher side of the house and if so is the truck holding the red body similar to those used for the NOR 1st gen Camaros?
I'm getting ready to spray my sub floor and reviewing what conditions a person would have to work under (no pun) would assist in how I attempt to emulate their efforts as far as space availability and obstacles go.

Thank you,
Mike

Maintenance / Anyone use InLine Tube fuel line
« on: June 12, 2012, 12:46:21 AM »
I found the cause of the small gas drops on the floor and isolated it to a pinhole in the gas line within the armor and at the 90 degree bend.
I guess it's expected after 45 years. I am looking at the InLine tube replacement and want to first ask if anyone here has used their lines before and your opinion.

Thank you,
Mike

Restoration / Tamraz firewall pad
« on: June 05, 2012, 02:03:27 AM »
I bought the firewall pad from Tamraz because the texture looked rough like the factory pad and not smooth like so many of the rubber coated replacement pads on the market. When I received it I found the material was not rubber coated like the factory but it did have the rough textured look. The thickness of the backing was approximate to the original. I felt the search for the exact reproduction still continues.
The other day I was in Home Depot and had seen a can of rubber spray. So I figured being the Tamraz pad had the texture but lacked the rubber coat, what the heck it was worth a try.
After tacking the pad with a lint roller to remove the loose fibers and giving it 4 wet layers with a 30 minute flash between each layer to prevent solvent popping, I was surprised how it looked and felt  just like the original pad though a slight heavier weight. But, being most will be concealed under the dash hardware the weight didn't matter to me. It had the texture and rubber feel that I was looking for. I will be using this pad as my replacement because it looks that close to an original until I can find the true exact reproduction pad.

Originality / 67 under body dichromate primer?
« on: May 27, 2012, 07:46:30 PM »
I know this topic has been discussed may times before. While scuff sanding the underside of my 67 NOR 5B convertible I see the whole underside is covered in what I thought was butternut yellow paint. But what is confusing is this appears in the upper parts of the transmission tunnel too. I have researched and read the articles about the underside colors and the finishing process on CRG, so the underside is said to be anywhere from red to black to gray but I find it hard to believe the underside would be completely painted in the body color considering the painting was automated (minus blackouts). What I have is not just overspray because it is too uniform and applied on purpose and on areas outside the robotics reach.

In the attached picture (Pic 1) the underside layers are as follows from bottom to top:
raw metal --> red primer --> yellow coating (paint or primer?) --> Rustoleum I applied in the 80's.

Looking at the topside body color picture (Pic 2) the layers are from bottom to top:
Raw metal --> factory gray primer --> factory butternut yellow paint --> (repaint) gray primer applied in the 80's --> paint applied in the 80's

The picture with the paint sample (Pic 3) of the 80's butternut paint job was scuff sanded the same grit as the underside to remove the gloss. As you can see it is noticeably lighter than the yellowish hue of the underside as well on the chassis rails that are completely opposite where the robotic sprayers overspray would hit.
If this isn't paint then this leads me to believe that a yellowish primer was also used, possibly a form of dichromate?

Restoration / 67 repo door skin experience?
« on: May 26, 2012, 09:00:46 PM »
What I thought would be a routine door skin replacement on my left door turned out to be a surprise once I removed the original skin and went to install the NOS one.
A spare L&R 67 NOS set I bought in the mid-80's and stored since then turned out to be a mis-matched set. The right skin is for a '67 but the left is for a '68 Camaro so that is useless to me.  :o
Looking for a NOS panel on ebay averages $500. That's an expensive price to pay for a GM sticker on the inside.
Has anyone installed either a repo skin or a complete repo door assembly? If so I would love to hear your experiences on fit and quality.
I am looking at Dynacorn and they boast of superior repo parts but then most repo places do.

Thank you,
Mike

Maintenance / Recommend a master cylinder rebuilder?
« on: May 25, 2012, 12:29:31 AM »
It's time to get the master cylinder sleeved after 45 years of use.
Can anyone recommend a place that they have had good service with?

Restoration / Color coded brake end fittings
« on: May 05, 2012, 06:36:53 PM »
In the process of re-restoring my 67 conv and looking at the brake lines available today I see color coded fittings for use around the master cylinder.
Back in the 80's I used GM bulk steel brake lines plus armor and reused the original master cylinder fittings because they were in excellent shape at that time but I never recall seeing colors on the different sizes.
I checked my survivor and they are also in good shape and show no signs of color. Is that something new today and if so, is it acceptable for judging?

Thank you,
Mike

General Discussion / Real 396/RS with A/C
« on: April 07, 2012, 04:05:34 PM »
Being a 1967 fan I stumbled across this eBay link. What caught my attention was the mixture of air conditioning and the alleged 'Real 396/RS car'
