I had heard that it was an ex-Chapparal Camaro also.

At this race Warren was the fastest A Sedan qualifier with Sid Rust 2nd fastest.  In the race, Warren and Sid had a great battle until Warren's motor broke. It appeared it would be an easy win for Sid as he had a large lead in A Sedan. But everybody forgot about David Jungerman in the Baby Tenda Camaro (ex-Walter Parkins Camaro). David started dead last and charged though the field to catch Sid Rust and go on to win A Sedan.

I'd have to do some digging to remind myself the details of this race, but I do recall my father was running 2nd to Sid when retiring from the race with a flat left rear tire...

Sid's Camaro was indeed an ex-Chaparral Camaro.  Prior to Sid, it was owned and raced in Trans Am by Marshall Robbins - maintained by Bill Spangler.  After Sid, it was raced by Jim Kersey out of Ohio, then was raced by Bill Cooper out of California.

Sid and his wife Nancy were amongst our very best racing friends over all the years.  As a youth, my very first beer and cigar were courtesy of Sid - at a small diner just outside Road Atlanta.  I was likely 15 or 16 at the time!  I have years worth of Sid and Nancy stories...  Does anyone else know that Sid once raced a turbine powered Sprint car?

Here's another shot of Bill Petree in the car during the 1969 ARRC race. This is from a Champion spark plug ad.

Fantastic, Jon!  Now to find a few photos of the car when raced by Marshall Robbins (in 1970)...  It was orange/black #24 when driven by Marshall...

Hell of an impact!!! WOW!!!   I can't pause it well enough to tell......did he strike another car or is that just armco and a tree???

klvn8r

Mickey Agee in his Corvette had already hit the guardrail and flipped upside down, landing parallel to the guardrail.  My dad went in backwards into the drivers side of the Corvette, driving both thru the guardrail, then spun around 180 and hit a tree head on, raising the rear of the Camaro about 5 feet high.  Mickey suffered a badly broken ankle, (along with other less severe injuries) requiring it to be fused during surgery.  Incredibly lucky he wasn't more severely injured.   My dad broke his right hand on the gear shift knob, and had his gall bladder "flip" (from the tree impact), requiring it to be removal...

I have film, transferred to DVD, of the entire accident, starting with Jim Fitzgerald sliding off the track...  Eighteen cars were involved, most  of them were destroyed...

This video was on the History Channel recently.  This is part 2 of 3 from a You Tube video of a science video discussing collisions in outer space...  Oddly enough, at the 13min 44 sec. mark, there is a short video clip of the crash that destroyed the Camaro...

Bill does have the remains of the body/chassis/cage, which he retrieved from the junk yard where Vern sold it.  He also has a fair amount of odds and ends/pieces from the car.   All of the various pieces of the car that Bill has in his possession are still stored locally (in Northern IL).  The Koni shocks were still mounted on the car when it went to Vern, so if Howard purchased them from Ray, then Ray acquired them from Vern...which is possible.  If I saw them (or a picture), and if they are still in original condition, I would likely know if they are the shocks that came off our 69 Camaro.  There never was a "title" for the car.  It was never "titled" - as the Greenwoods acquired the chassis directly from the GM tech center when the car was originally constructed....

Ray Irwin did purchase our later 1991 Camaro, as well as all the spares for the '91 Camaro.  We used both Koni and Penske shocks on the '91 Camaro and both sets went with the car.

We ran Al Bartz motor's in our 1969 Camaro until about 1976 or so...as did Carl Shafer before us.

Al was a personable guy, generally answered his own phone and was always responsive to a need.  A true racer and fantastic person.  So unfortunate he died at such an early age...

Roy Woods raced Camaros prior to switching to Javelins for the 1971 season. Here's an article from my Winter 1969 issue of 1001 Custom and Rod Ideas magazine.

Les Lindley owned and raced this Camaro in the late 1970's and 1980...

I'm away from all my materials, but the "photocopy" of the front of the trophy that Dick Fischer sent me reads something like " 1976 Central Division A-Sedan Champion"   with drawings and names of the tracks... I don't think Mr. Fischer ventured to any "national" races. The ad in Autoweek with the checkered flag photo reads basically the same thing...   I'm sure it was a "points total" regional Championship.    Ken

I remember Dick and the car...  He must have won the Cen Div regional points Championship in 1976 - it wouldn't suprise me at all, as he was very quick.  It's a beautiful car!

The car is painted "as raced" in '72-76...   Dick Fischer built/owned/drove... It won Cen-Div Championship in '76.   Was usually #18 or 81.     Was listed for sale in Autoweek after championship....   without the logbook in front of me, other owners were ( probably out of order)  Dr. Norm Hoeffleur (sp?)  O.M. Malsbree,  Dan Beatty, who brought it to Texas, painted it red w/ white stripes #70    I may be forgetting one, too....    Ken

Did it win the Cen-Div Regional points championship in 76?

My father won the Cen Div AS National points Championship in 1976 in his 1969 Camaro...

He raced his 1969 Camaro in the Central Division from 1974 thru 1984.  His won the Central Division AS (and later GT1) points Championship in 1976, 1977, 1979 and 1980.  He finished 2nd in Central Division Nationl points in 1975, 1978 and 1981.  He finished 3rd in Central Division National points in 1974, 1983 and 1984, and finished 4th in 1982.

He won the Runoffs in 1980, finished 3rd in 1981, finished 4th in 1977.  He competed in the runoffs in the Camaro from '74 thru '84 (except '82).

He won the June Sprints in 1977, 1979 and 1981....

(All in his 1969 Camaro).

All told, he raced from 1955 thru 1999....

Scott

As promised, here are a few pics of my brother's 69 A sedan car.  It was built in the early 70s by Dick Fisher of Wisconsin.  I believe it ran its first AS race in 72, Central Division.  He won Cen-Div in this car in 1976.  This car is also registered with the Historic TA group.  TA-025, if I recall.  This car will be for sale in the coming months.

Just curious...  Who drove this car in the Central Division in the 1970's?  What was won in the Cen-Div in 1976?

A Sedan was phased out at the conclusion of the 1979 racing season.   My father, who had raced in A Sedan since 1974, was the first GT1 National Champion in 1980 in his 1969 Camaro...  In 1980, the GT1 class consisted of former A Sedan class cars.

In 1981, B Production was combined into the GT1 class - making GT1 a combination of the former A Sedan and the former B Production cars.  My father finished 3rd in the 1981 GT1 National Championship runoffs in his 1969 Camaro.

My father won the June Sprints in A Sedan in 1977 and 1979, and won the June Sprints in GT1 in 1981, all in his 1969 Camaro.  He had previously won the June Sprints in B Production in 1968 and 1969 in his 1963 Corvette.

He finished 2nd in the June Sprints in B Production in 1970 (1963 Corvette), in 1971 (1963 Corvette), in 1973 (1968 Corvette), in A Sedan in 1978 (1969 Camaro), in GT1 in 1988 (1987 Pontiac Firebird), in 1989 (1987 Pontiac Firebird)

He finished 3rd in the June Sprints in B Modified in 1960 (Edwards Special), in B Production in 1972 (1963 Corvette), in GT1 in 1983 (1969 Camaro), in 1992 (1991 Camaro).

All together, he raced in 45 June Sprints races...

The current A Sedan class bears no relation to the original A Sedan class.  Completely different rules apply to the current class...

Thank you Chad for posting that on Todd's behalf.

Welcome aboard, Todd. It's great to have you sign up for the forum. I look forward to your contributions and would definitely enjoy learning more about your dad and his racing career. Many of the Daytona and Sebring endurance races back in the old days featured Camaros and other pony cars besides the Corvettes, sports cars, Prototypes, etc. I don't mind you posting links to those old races. I'd love to see footage from the ARRC events including the one your dad won at Riverside in 1968. If you have any footage from the '69 ARRC A/Sedan race, I'm sure Scott (S A Dunbar) would appreciate seeing that. In fact any A/Sedan footage (which often ran against A and B Production Corvettes) would be a lot of fun to see. Thanks again for signing up and sharing.

I would certainly enjoy seeing video of the 1969 ARRC A/Sedan race...!   Of course, Bill Petree, driving a 1969 Camaro, won the A/Sedan National Championship in this race.  My father won the 1980 GT1 National Championship driving the very same Camaro.

a side note...  Todd's father, Dick, and my father, Jerry, raced together many times...  In those days, Dick was running a A/Sedan Camaro and my father was racing a Corvette in B Production.  In the very first inaugural "feature" race at Blackhawk Farms Raceway in 1968 - a SCCA Regional Race - Jerry finished 1st overall and 1st in B Production, and Dick finished 2nd overall and 1st in A Sedan...

Here's a Valvoline ad with the Camaro, as driven by Bill Petree.

Fantastic!  How do you find these things?
