Originality / RS Grill Black, Correct Finish..?
« on: April 06, 2012, 01:01:36 AM »
Hey guys. I came across an NOS RS Grill for sale, so I snagged it. It's in pretty decent shape for it's age, but I'm wondering what the correct finish for the "black" part of the grill? Was it simply the black plastic from GM, or did they finish it with some kind of low-gloss black paint?

Thanks for all the input. Like I said, my friend got his car without the original motor – I think it has an early 70s truck SB in it. We've just been keeping the radar on if a correct '69 350 block showed up. Will consider, but might pass on this one. I'll see what he thinks...

Sorry guys, didn't mean to confuse the issue, I'd never re-stamp a code to deceive/forge - or try to pass of as OE motor.  I'm just trying to make an assessment in terms of value.

Yes, this is a correct motor for the car, but with the deck stamp info missing, would future collectors "roll their eyes" and move on to the next car, when considering purchase?

Will check out the discussions you mentioned, thanks.

Restoration / Engine Block Decked, Stamp Codes Gone...

A buddy has a '69 SS/RS without the original motor, and we've been looking on and off for a correct SB for the car. I found one, but the block has been decked in the rebuild, and the original date/engine codes are gone on the stamp pad. It's a "K" code (late '68).

How does this effect value - as his car is a collectable Camaro?

Also, I've heard of "re-stamping", which I assume is replicating the code back on the pad. Is this frowned upon, or not so bad if the date on the motor matches?

Thx.

Actually, no book, I'm using Tire Rack.com. Look up any tire, and click "specs" in the table below. They provide all dimensions of the tire including diameter. Very nice feature...

Thanks for the info guys - and thanks for measuring "69Z28-RS."

"Stingr69", thanks, I will probably run a 225 or 235 but no larger. It's weird how tire diameters run. A 225/70 R14 is a larger diameter than a 235/60 R15 !

YH code would be Z28 wheels – would love to have an original set of those! Sorry, can't answer the part number question. I'm mostly interested in proper fit, so there's no tire rubbing. Also, want the 15" rim, so I can run the deeper style trim ring.

If not too much trouble, that would be great. I think it's 4.25" on the 15x7 wheel, but I could be wrong.

Yours were probably added later. "FW" code doesn't show up on 1969 code chart for Camaro Rally's, so that's encouraging. Are yours 15x7s?

(You can research this site for wheels codes.)

I've got a '69 with original 14x7 Rally's and am looking to put a set 15x7's on. Do I have to find '68-69 wheels, or will the early 70s "FW" code wheels work the same?

My research shows that the original 14x7's have a 4" backspace. 15x7's?

Wait, thought you said "dealer" installed. Factory installed even better. So, would that be an in-dash radio combo, or under dash?

Sorry for the delay. The Dealer's name was "C" Thomas Chevrolet (formerly Baker Chevrolet), in Gary, IN.

Any pics of a dealer installed 8-track on a console Camaro? Would the Assembly manual show this?

I never thought of that, but that makes perfect sense. It's probably for the trunk key. Attached is a scan of the part of the invoice with the code. Note "Stereo Tape" very curious about that...
