Decoding/Numbers / VIN on a Powerglide
« on: October 02, 2012, 01:05:30 AM »
All, trying to deduce the year of my Powerglide.  The pan stamp indicates it is a 1970 (C0R03N).  I am trying to find a partial VIN somewhere on the tranny to determine if the pan was just replaced.

I can find no VIN on the driver's side upper portion or the passenger side lower portion, no evidence whatsoever.

I found out that the tranny had been worked on at some point as a manual valve body was noted upon the most recent rebuild.

Since there is no VIN, can I deduce that this likely could have been a '66 Powerglide that had a later model pan installed when work was done on the tranny?

I read also that it was common to have no VIN stamped on Powerglides then.  Would '70 Powerglides have VIN for sure as they did get more meticulous about this sort of thing as time went on. If '70 Powerglides had partial VINs any idea where they would be?

Thanks.

Restoration / Resto Advice
« on: September 28, 2012, 06:40:52 PM »
I have touched on this before, but as I am at the point of pulling the trigger so to speak and start shelling the cash...

In chatting with you all over the past months,

I have chosen to keep the car to exactly match the trim tag.  I do have a correctly coded SS350 with the car (six weeks after car was built). First engine was blown in the 70s.  I have the original 12-bolt and a '70 powerglide.

I was going to:
1) Upgrade suspension to Hotchkis Total Vehicle System
2) Upgrade to new four-wheel power disc brakes
3) Upgrade to new rack and pinion steering
4) Upgrade to tach and gage package from standard console car.

I plan to keep all original parts.

Thoughts about this strategy?

Due to non-matching numbers, intend to enjoy the car, local shows, etc...

Restoration / Wiring Harness
« on: September 28, 2012, 12:14:24 PM »
What is the guidance out there as to whether one should replace wiring harnesses during a restoration or not?  Pulled a 67 rs/ss out of a barn Montana... I know, I know... but I really did pull it myself... It hasn't seen the streets since 1987.

I have the car down to the hulk.  It has been sandblasted and primered.  Clip is removed.  Original wiring harness was pulled.  I don't really know the status of the original wiring harness either way.

Should I not chance it and just replace it?

Also, for the headlight doors.  There are aftermarket operating mechanisms now that work much better than the original motors.  Should I deviate from originality in this case and go with new design to insure better operation?

Where is the best place to find interior paint, for the metal surfaces, and what gloss? ('67 Gold Deluxe Interior)

Second question.  Where can I obtain Deluxe Gold Seat belts.  Need the complete set, retractors and all.

Thanks,

Restoration / Restoration Strategy Advice for 1967 RS/SS Camaro
« on: June 20, 2012, 12:24:22 PM »
All,

I have come across an RS/SS with rare paint scheme.  Sierra Fawn with Beige Vinyl top, black bumble bee stripe, gold deluxe.  Original engine was blown in the early '70s, but I found a correctly coded 'MV' SS 350, for Powerglide/smog equip that was date stamped in the same plant (LOS) six weeks after the car.

Peeling further back I have found the tranny to be date stamped for a '70 powerglide (C0R03N).

The car does have the original 12-bolt rear end.

What is the collective thought on the way I should go with this restoration?

Should I hold as true to the original scheme as possible (match vehicle to trim tag) or does the existing deviation from a matching number vehicle open the door for me to restore to any color/trim package of my preference?

As a short follow-up, were I to go to a tuxedo black with black vinyl top, in this case the bumble bee stripe would still exist (white) correct, as normally the stripe follows the top color which would be different in this case?

I am ready to pull the tranny and search for the VIN there to confirm that it is in fact a '70 tranny.  Should it be found that only the pan was replaced and in fact the the tranny is a '67 tranny does that change anything?

The original color is rare, but putting that color on the car, locating the beige vinyl top, etc... isn't going to be a small feat.  Is is worth it?

Is there still intrinsic value in checking the trim plate to find a car matching exactly as posted on the firewall w/o a matching number powerplant sitting in the engine compartment?

Thanks a million.  Car is in pieces, ready to pull engine/tranny/subframe and begin media blasting.

Is there anyway to find out the breakout of the cars? I have an rsss, sirrea fawn with beige vinyl top. Tryinhg to fibd out how rare the combo is.

I have a 67 camaro rs/ss with front drum brakes. Are these steel wheels with hub caps or ralleys? I have found conflicting guidance, some stating that due to the rsss it came with ralliss regardless. Thoughts?

Restoration / 1967 Camaro Vinyl tops
« on: June 18, 2012, 09:10:40 PM »
My 67 Camaro is an RS/SS Sierra Fawn color with beige vinyl top.  I can't seem to locate anyone who sells the original '67 beige vinyl top. Most standard places lump in '67 with the white tops of '68 and '69 Camaros.

Any ideas as I am trying to restore.

thanks.
