Trans-Am Camaros / HTA at Toyota Long Beach race
« on: March 31, 2018, 03:13:03 PM »
Just a reminder that the Historic Trans-Am cars will be at the  Toyota Long Beach
Indy Car race event April 13/14.
HTA will practise Friday and have a 20 min. race on Saturday.

I believe it was an ignition problem. Al would know.

Yes, it was all rather amazing how a D sedan Mini driver got to run with the
Big Dogs - many thanks to Big Al and his crew.

Taken at the 71 Michigan International T/A during practice or qualifying. Unfortunately early during the
race, the camaro developed a severe missfire under acceleration that never went away.  Finished the
race way down. in hindsight I should have parked it and saved wear and tear on the car.

I am still looking for the slim young driver.

Steve, was there any info about these 2 cars?  Real race cars or replicas?

What did Kent Fellows do with this car after he bought it?  Official T/A results show him
T/A racing with Warren Agor, but not till 72 - doesn't say what year camaro.

Is this car still alive somewhere in vintage racing?

Trans-Am Camaros / Re: Trans Am racing pace car pics...are there any?
« on: January 12, 2018, 04:10:40 AM »
I remember this race - started 21st along side Carl Shafer.
By this time, the old 67 camaro was tired and the throttle linkage
broke in the middle of the race.  I managed to get back to the
pits and the crew fixed it, but I probably lost 4 or 5 laps - did
manage to finish 17th.  I think 36 cars started the race.

Even though the factories were gone, 17,000 fans still showed up for this race.

Sadly, there was only one more race for us at Watkins Glen where the engine died
during the race.  It was a sad ending for a tough old car and it was later sold to a
local stock car racer.

Sometime in 70 the camaro got a new paint job - yellow with black stripes.  We are loaded up
ready to head out - not sure where - maybe the Glen, Bryar, or St. Jovite?  You can see the borrowed 69
Dodge 1/2 ton pick-up, I borrowed from a friend, is a might over-loaded!  The single axle trailer was
was probably borrowed from one of owner Al's stock car friends. This pic was taken outside of Al's
house in Weston Ontario - suburb of Toronto.

yes, have seen them both before.  #48 I believe is at Michigan International taken at an scca
event in 69.  I shared the car that weekend with GM engineer/racer Dick Hoffman who was going
to help us with car set-up etc- he had already been racing a 67 (H&H Racing) and worked at the
GM MIlford proving grounds, and had lots of test miles on that track.

Thanks Mike

It was 50 years ago about this time of year I made that deal with Mo to buy that car.
It was sold to me as a roller - no engine or tranny.  Had rear drum brakes and street
Koni shocks, and a very basic roll cage.

Had no idea at that time what Trans-Am adventures lay ahead !

Trans-Am Camaros / Re: Penske Camaro replica
« on: November 07, 2017, 05:29:12 AM »
I met Ron at the  "How to Cheat in the Trans-Am"  tribute night at the Petersen Museum
Nov. 5/09.  He was one of the speakers.  I was amazed at some of the stories I heard, and
I'm sure there were more to tell!  I understand he was very involved in the building of the
68 & 69 Penske camaros.

I hope to meet Dan Lipetz this Saturday at our local British Columbia HMR event at the Mission
Raceway Road Course.  He is supposed to bring a copy of his book.

On a sad note I just learned that Dave Bean, of Dave Bean Engineering has recently passed.  Dave was
well known for his Lotus parts business and I believe he is the same Dave Bean who worked with the
Jerry Titus TG Firebird T/A program in 69/70.
