General Discussion / Re: Storing Tires
« on: November 20, 2013, 05:53:11 PM »
I agree with storing them horizontal. I have had a couple of older original motorcycle tires for Sporters and Triumphs, and I could always tell the ones that were stored upright because they would end up having a flat spot. You think it is noticeable on a car, man try putting a tire with a flat spot on a motorcycle! I have a few sets of original tires for various vehicles and when I have stored them for longer periods of time horizontal is the way to go, piece of wood on the floor first sounds like a good idea, also the bags over them another good idea.

Mine is oriented the same as Charleys. Now how does it show it is mounted in the 70 AIM?

Good point Gary, although I think you would be looking at very late August if that.

So there is no magic search "the whole country" feature on craigslist. I will search the biggest metropolis areas around me ( SF LA & San DIego). If I was still in the midwest I would search chicago Cleveland/Cincinnati , Indianapolis. You get the idea. Another way to do it is type in to google " 1969 camaro 12 bolt sale craigslist" Or if you wanted to try to refine it "1969 Camaro 12 bolt BU rear end". Then any craigslist ad will populate with this info. I am sure there are many ways to skin a cat, this is just what has worked for me, (with some persistence).

Check out heart beat city, but I would visually inspect anything I got from them, after reading about prior purchases from different people.

One more thing did you get the protecto-plate or paperwork, that shows your car came with a BU coded rear end? Just curious

I see them from time to time on ebay. I also see them on craiglist, but with either you have to almost do a daily search, and with craigslist also different cites. Of course buyer beware with restamps and the like.

you have just doubled my knowledge concerning motors  :D. Honestly good point, always thought about rotating mass as far as wheels go, didn't think of the flywheel, but same idea.. ;)

It sounds like Gary W.(RS) found some old stock , hopefully that inventory is correct and one of the dealers will have it for you Gary. Gary W. did the leg work and found them for you, I look forward to hearing that 1 of the dealerships still had it.

thanks for the input Jon. So if they were probably using the close ratio transmission as you say, would all of the racers and Penske been using the M-22 because of the beefier gears?

I wonder how often back then (when they were road racing) they would swap out their rear end gears and transmissions for better ratios fro a particular track.
I would think the M-21 with the 4.10 may have been a good combo for some tracks, but it seems like it wouldn't have been a one size (ratios) fits all week in and week out.
Would the M-20 ratio have ever been preferred for a specific track with a special rear end ratio?
Maybe Jon Mello (trans am guru) would have some insight here ?

Well, you have the owner history, are any of those owners above ground still? (sorry original owner CRG members ;D)
If any of them are maybe you can contact them and get some more info on what they did while they had the car? They may have pictures or be able to piece together things like the hood, and give you some good info on your car.

You could check the date on the hood and see if it corresponds to the build date of your car (06A). If it is an original ZL2 hood it will have a date stamped on the drivers side corner on the side. should be a 2 digit number that indicates what week it was produced. ex : my 08C has a hood dated 26 (26th week of 1969) .
Many owners got the hood for there car after the fact through dealerships, and I would think most of the over the counter ZL2 hoods do not have a date on them in this same spot. Did you get any paperwork with your car that may show what options it came with?

I agree with the flat side must go toward the manifold, and donut side towards the exhaust pipe. I also agree that it could only go the 2 ways weight pointed towards the frame rail, or pointed towards the firewall. I think the only thing in question now is did the Z/28 leave the line with it only in the one position that is shown in the AIM, or was there a reason it may have been positioned toward the firewall or was it the line workers preference. OR all the original pictures I have and the one shown on the bench by JDV are the exception?

The heat riser valve in the photo in reply #30 appears to be installed upside-down; pushing the weight down (toward the ground) against spring pressure opens it, and that valve can't be pushed down because of the limit pin - it can only be pushed UP. The valve has a flat side, and a chamfered side - the flat side goes against the flat exhaust manifold outlet with a fire-ring gasket, and the chamfered side goes against the flared exhaust pipe with a "donut".
John check out the pic in post 22 and then look again. It looks like it is installed just as it is shown in the picture (chamfered towards the flared exhaust, flat side towards manifold)
also looks like it is installed just like JDV's on the bench.
