So would either side cover pass a judge's inspection?

Any commentary on the casting times in front of the caster part number?

Was there only one factory casting for the Muncie assembly division, or ???

Is there any timeline as to when the changes took place?

Van Nuys vs. Norwood?

Well, That is exactly what is desired in establishing this here.
Looking for input from knowledgable people who can contribute to this thread regarding the details of restoration, assembly, and defining the minute points of these Muncies.
I see fonts present on what I have as core side covers.

Been doing several things to get my M20's correct.

However, I do have 2 questions...

1 : How do we decipher the clock date time stamping on these?

2 : I am at the pointe of trying to decide which side ciover that I have should be correct for a January - March Van Nuys build.

I have 2 here with different font sizes.

The first image has much less casting flash cracks vs. the second one.

What are the differences between the 2 castings and why???

Here are the 2 that I have to select from :

Well, so far... my walk has determined some of these Bolts.

RSC , RBW , TR Bolts on the tailshaft housing.
The Tailshaft housing has 3 larger diameter bolts on the at 5, 6, and the 7 o'clock positions.

SBC , RSC , and TR for the side cover bolts.

TR ( for now ) for the front retainer.

RBW and L for the speedo gear tab.

Now, I just had my 1969 M20 rebuilt for my coupe.
Everything we had for it was TR bolts and the speedo gear tab was an RBW bolt.

The Drain Plug is a W.

I pulled out my PaceCar's M20 and I have a Metal ID tag of 3950356.

Would like to ask others here to contribute to this thread to gauge any variances across the years.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Registry for the JL8 Cars?

Trim tag build date is 03d and the axle code is QX 0203g1 E. Can you gleam anything from the admittedly poor picture about the taper? I will check on the taper and the fronts and will post any info I get on it. I this in the window for the JL8 option to be factory?

Maybe a thought but does anyone know when the NON tapered JL8 housings were available complete and over the counter for purchase?

Restoration / 1969 Muncie restoration

Thought I would start this one...

I am in the process to do 2 rebuilds of M20 transmissions.

I am looking at the bolts for the front retainer, side cover, speedo tab bolt, and the bolts for the rear tail housing.

I looked at the transmission mount bolts that I have and they are TR bolts.

The speedo bolt at the tab is an "L".

So far, I have some SBC & TR tail housing bolts.

Can you guys offer up what I need to be correct for my M20's???

General Discussion / Re: ZL1 carburetor
« on: August 28, 2011, 10:16:39 PM »
Does nayone have the info on the dates of these 4296 holleys that came on the factory ZL1s and l88 corvettes .   I know a 911 sold for 10K a few years back.  Havent seen many prior to 942.

I saw one on eBay with an August 68 date.
Very early.
I would assume that anything prior to February 1969 was intended for an L88.

Is the question here regarding establishing the correct date/timelines for a 4296 to be "ON" a ZL1 delivered car?
-OR-
Are you trying to establish a price to any 4296?

If your question is regarding correct delivered timelines, ie: open the hood of a brand new 69 ZL1 and see that 4296 there in person on that motor,
then I would invite those in the know to offer that answer.

If you are trying to establish the price of one of these with a 1968/1969 date, then it would be up to the need of someone who has a real car,
whether it be an L88 or a ZL1, needing a 4296 with the date code for their car missing the original carb.

Clone cars, ones that are not real, made to look correct, define a value that only fits that need; and one established by that owner.

Restoration / 12 Bolt Axle GM issue Pinion Yoke
« on: August 08, 2011, 05:39:41 AM »
12 Bolt GM issue Pinion Yoke.
In this discussion, this inquiry is directed to GM Camaro 1967-1969 (1970) 12 Bolt housings.

Im starting on my 12 Bolt rear axle rebuild.
I am obtaining the parts for it to get it completed and ready for install when the coupe shell comes back from body/paint.

Question:
Is there anything to know about these Pinion Yokes?
I have to buy one as I need one for mine.

12 Bolt vs. 10 Bolt GM issue Pinion Yokes:
Are they the same or are they different?
I was not sure if the 10 & 12 Bolt Pinions had the same thread spline count.

 ???

Decoding/Numbers / Re: K79 option

OK.

Where would one typically find this installed?
396's?
SS-350 cars?
9560 cars?
Would a Transistorized Ignition fall into that category of alternator?

Decoding/Numbers / K79 option
« on: July 31, 2011, 10:29:11 PM »
Could I ask you guys to discuss and define this option.
Most searches I do come up with A/C, TH400, or Z28 in relative fields.

Thanx

BTW, would it be worthwhile to add an RPO "code" category?
I am aware of the PDF list, but a place to discuss those...
