Decoding/Numbers / Re: Intake Letter

Stamped or cast?  I think the 67 intake had an R, it may be explained in the Colvin book.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: VIN on a Powerglide

Good info to know, never thought of that.  It may take awhile to find a pan, I've been looking for a long time with no luck.  You may have to buy an entire tranny to get the pan you need.

Since this is for LOS cars, might be useful to include the Fisher Body scheduling code from the trim tag, in addition to the year and body build date code.  I'm hoping to pull my engine in a few weeks and will get a good shot of the hole for the oil pressure line at that time.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: VIN on a Powerglide

There may be date and plant codes in the powerglide case castings along the lines of how an engine or rear is coded.  One of our experts here may know.  Seems GM wanted a method to track any parts that might fail, bad runs, etc.  That said, it seems there is more attention or concern paid to manual than automatic transmissions.  If you're showing the car it may be a different story.  I've no idea how close they would look at a trans case.

As an aside, we were looking for lower rubber window stops for a 55 Olds we are restoring.  None of the usual suppliers had them.  Search the p/n off one and found them at a Chevy supplier and listed for 41-54 Chevrolet.

Aren't they identical, so same p/n?  Won't be in the AIM, installed at the Fisher Body operations.

General Discussion / Re: Door weatherstrip

For the trunk, has anyone tried this supplier:
http://www.restorationspecialties.com/index.html

See item 4766 on page 43 of the catalog, sold by the foot.  I stopped by there a few days ago to buy some other resto stuff, and was going to get a sample but they had the entire spool at the Hershey meet.  I did see a roll of some other similar type weatherstrip in the shop, that one was made by some rubber company in Mogadore, OH.

Restoration / Re: Radiator restoration
« on: September 28, 2012, 06:28:10 PM »
If you're going to show level chances are the tanks will need to be pulled and dents tapped out.  You may need to remove them regardless.  I recently had mine re-cored, and I think to have it reworked to show condition would have added $200-300 to the bill, but it sounds like you are doing the work?  I saw a couple Legends cars at the Camaro Nationals that looked over-restored, much prettier radiator than how they left the factory.  I'm not sure if your car will be a driver or show.  Before you get into it, ensure it is really the original or date correct if doing a show level resto.  Any doubts post pictures here and the experts will comment.

The tags are important - if you send it out, ensure the shop knows to keep them and reinstall exactly if it's taken apart for repair.  Take pics before you drop it off.

Restoration / Re: Wiring Harness
« on: September 28, 2012, 05:56:35 PM »
Pete, You have helped me in the past.  I have the original 12 bolt and thought I had the original tranny.  It is a Powerglide, but the stamp is C0R03N, indicating at least the pan is probably a '70.  Can't locate a VIN, but did locate a circular number in the casing, looking like a clock dial on the driver's side casing, stamped '66'.  Don't know what that does for me.

I did pull the frame off and can get at the tranny from all sides and just can't find any numbers on it besides the pan stamp and all the patents.

Is the L48 a big block?

The engine is correctly coded "MV" - Powerglide with smog equipment and built six weeks after.  Folks here have told me that the car to this engine is still out there but I am at a bit of a loss as to where to find it.

I toyed with the idea of putting newer suspension, brakes and steering components, to really enjoy it, saving all the old parts, but think I will go for as much of a resto as I can and just get it on the street sooner.

I did upgrade the 3:31 non-posi 12-bolt unit to 3:73 posi (kept the old gears) and did have the tranny rebuilt, taking the original torque converter to a 2,500 stall with a shift kit.  The engine had 2:02 heads already cut and I have had it completely rebuilt as well.

The engine was date stamped six weeks later, Dec 31, 66 at the same plant as the car, chrome oil tube.

I figured that since it wasn't a numbers matching car, I could drift a bit out of the lanes of strict restoration and enjoy it too, while presenting a definite original RS/SS.  Sierra Fawn with Beige Vinyl top and black bumble stripe is pretty rare.

Console car but no gages.  Thought of keeping all the old stuff and converting to a console/gage car too.

Dressing up with torque thrust or American rims from the era.

Must have been your car I was thinking was the other recent K code, now I remember.  L48 is the 350.  Since you are upgrading from stock I'd continue along that line as the funds allow.  Keep the original parts if possible.  Keep the pics coming!

Going that far into a resto, I'd replace it.  You don't want to find out you've got problems after it is back together.

Headlight doors depend on your intentions for the car - show or drive.  If you don't have good working originals or are missing components and are not showing the car as original, I'd go with the upgrade.

Looks like your car was "born" the same day as mine - My LOS L48 has a Fisher Body scheduling code of K250.  There was another "day K" owner on this site recently.  Do you have the original drivetrain?

Restoration / Re: Rear well Liner -convertible
« on: September 20, 2012, 08:29:36 PM »
Found this thread over at TC site, scroll down to the picture.  There was also a discussion thread if you do a search under the Convertibles section, using well + liner, however it was never confimed if just glue or glue plus large pan head trim screws was correct.  Personally I think just glue is correct.  If you have a fold down seat that may throw you another curve, as there is that fiberboard trim panel that screws to the steel divider panel, and it's screws might have also caught the glued overlap of the well liner.

That was a Fisher Body operation, so won't be in the AIM.  Go here:

and download the Body By Fisher Service Manual, see section 13 Folding Top.

I've got some survivor/original pics, some with a/c.  Also some redone.  Like already mentioned, is there something specific you need?

General Discussion / Re: luggage rack

Maybe a short 2x4 or broom handle was included with the rack, for when you actually had it loaded down and wanted to get into the trunk.  ;D I think there was a red card that came with the kit, probably a warning or caution card.
