HBC and Ricks....all the clips were different in size than the originals that came on the car and the blue ones were painted vs translucent paint for the 3/8" clips.   Both solid vendors and I've bought my fair share of stuff from them, so not bashing either!!  They both stand by their products and offered full refunds if not satisfied.

Restoration / Fuel Line Clip Restoration

OK, had a hard time trying to either restore or find correct 3/8" fuel line clips.  Ordered reproductions and sent them back (wrong color, etc).  I tied the Dykem machinest dye, but too dark.   Finally tried a hobby store and asked they had any sort of transparent blue paint or dye - they suggested Testors 1257 Transparent Blue.   So thought I'd try it.   It's a little glossy, but I thought the color/transparency was pretty close.   Here's the results:

On the left is the Testors Painted version.  Note the original is greasy on top - only the area around the bolt hole is the right color.

And all the brake and fuel lines restored/replated:

Agree.  I've seen a few cars other VN cars built around the same time and they also had green firewalls. As you point out, my guess is they ran out of black paint and picked something close to keep the line running.

And the firewall on my VN 04B was painted a dark Fathom green.  Go figure.  Note the "23' original factory marking on the driver side cowl section.  The car is Cortez Silver while the firewall is metallic green - painted by the factory.

My 04B '69 Z has the same style as John Z.   Flat tip, same text, 90 deg "E".

Thanks all on the feedback!

Regarding the pale blue bleeders - the originals were in good enough shape to re-use.   I just de-greased and cleaned them.  Though I think Steve's Camaro Parts & HBC sells the correct ones.  I know Rick's does not....

And yes, NAPA sells the piston, but unless it's really corroded, no need to replace it - it does not touch the cylinder walls.

On Brake Boosters website - he has examples for various plating fininshes:  http://www.brakeboosters.com/services.htm

By the way, I've used him for quite a few pieces for my Z - I've been very satisfied by the quality.

They're not that hard to rebuild yourself.   You can buy a rebuild kit from NAPA for under $20, not including the piston.

Basically:

- Use compressed air to blow out the old piston (place a piece of wood in the caliper to let the piston slam into).  Compressed air fed into the brake line hole.
- Removed the old seals
- Thereafter, I de-rusted the calipers using the electrolysis process and applied Boeshield to retain natural cast iron finish.
- Went to Harbor Freight and bought a caliper piston seal press for like $10
- Installed the new seals
- Installed the old piston as it was in good shape.

Done!  The Chevy Chassis Service Manual describes the process as well.

Date Code:  "87"

Note:  I've already chanced the bleeder cap to the lighter pale blue.

Restoration / Re: Paint gun....choosing the right one.

Daven1256 - the paint gun manufactures list the PSI and CFM specs required to operate their specific gun lines.  Here's the DeVilbiss site - select a gun and just go to the tech spec tab and it will list the requirements needed to support the gun:  http://www.autorefinishdevilbiss.com/Division/DeVilbiss.aspx

Hope this helps.

Here's the post on the Tamraz pad:  http://www.camaros.org/forum/index.php?topic=9630.0

Thought it was creative and looked pretty good.

I purchased the expensive one from Rick's and ended-up returning it as it was not really close to the OE version.   Rick's sources it from a vendor in California (I tried to find the vendor, but can't seem to get a hit).  Anyway, the top is more like a rubber sheet and the insulation is very thick with a silver heat shield impregnated between the rubber and the insulation.

There are few other posts regarding the pad - someone purchased a molded pad on eBay from Tamraz's on eBay and applied a molded rubber spray thereafter.   Looked very good from the pictures, so that's my plan or attempt to rebuild the original!

PPG 9317 is the paint code.  It's not a smooth paint, rather it has a suede texture to it.

Here's the link to the PPG paint chip chart.  It's under "Flat Colors"
