Originality / Re: 1969 Fuel Line Frame Rail Bracket Bolt
« on: June 18, 2013, 11:44:16 PM »
The AIM calls out the standard fuel/brake line screw (PN 3958062), which I posted previously.  I checked to see if Z28 or L78s or L48 used something different, but the AIM did not indicate that.  So a variation may have occured with Boston's or BillOhio's car at the NOR plant.   I did scour all the bolts/screws I have tagged/bagged just to make sure, but could not find a screw/bolt like the one on Boston or Bill's cars, other than for the RS inner fender support that had the anchor and T.   So for what it's worth, pretty sure my car did not come with that style.

Thanks Mike!  Can't wait to get it done.    Restoring all the subcomponents seems to take forever.  One of these days, I'll start a build thread on Team Camaro.  I've been following yours - some good info I've picked up from your thread there.

Just checked through the various bagged bolts I removed from my Z.  Regarding the 3958062 screw - here's the head mark variations I noted.  All are same dimensions, just different head markings reflective of different suppliers.

What is unique about that particular fuel line clip bolt?  Per the AIM (ref UPC 8m page 125), it's just a standard 3958062 screw - same as all the other fuel and brake line srews - over 20 were used for brake and fuel line clips.

Here's the screw styles that are on my car - '69 Z, 04B, Van Nuys built.   Note - I'm sure various suppliers were used for this relatively common screw, as was the case on my car as some head markings differed, though they are of course the same size.

For reference, here's some more pics consistent with what others have posted regarding center link and idler arm finishes - after I cleaned them up but before installed on the car.  Mostly just degreased the parts.  Idler arm part that mounts to frame has blackish finish and center link was grayish and maybe with hints of blue:

No paint on the parts....only applied Boeshield.

Edmontonvillage - Thanks and interesting.  I'll have to inspect the pulley better and determine if it's paint.   Must be a very light paint as it's not obvious like the other components.

How about the power steering pulley?   I have yet to restore the pump and pulley.  The pulley appears to have been phosphate plated as well.   Compare the finish of the pulley to the pump in the last pic.

Hey Hans what paint did Jerry use on the engine block?

Sorry to the late response - just noticed your question Mike.   I actually asked Jerry some months ago what paint brand he uses - its:  Seymour EN-48 paint.

Thanks.   Subframe was sand plasted, primed and then I applied a coat of 30% gloss lacquer...

The tie-rods are new (I still have the originals, may get rebuilt and install later); everything else is original, but was either lightly glass beaded or run through electrolysis to de-rust.   Boeshield is all I applied.   No rust at all to date.  Every bolt is original as well - glass beaded and replated/phospated.   Been fun, but very slow resto project.

Here's some before shots:

I believe natural metal finish.

Here's mine removed and then restored  Note factory paint dubs/smear:

And restored - degreased, light glass bead, Boeshield to protect surface from rust.   Note that I didn't re-apply the big pink blob....

Jerry MacNeish rebuilt my engine and refinshed the pullies (water pump, crank, and smog).   60% Gloss Black is what he refinished them in.

I've been using Boeshield on the cast iron suspension parts as well on some of the stamped metal.   Seems to work pretty good - no rust on those parts yet, but they haven't left the garage yet either.
