Restoration / Re: Steering Column Sticker
« on: August 24, 2013, 04:15:41 AM »
Excellent.  Thanks guys.  I will either try the advice or see if I can contact Don Lightfoot to produce one.

Here's a better picture of my former tag.   Standard column with standard wheel.   O4B LA built RS Z.   I can't quite decern the part numbers - are the same as Steve's?

Restoration / Steering Column Sticker
« on: August 23, 2013, 04:41:17 PM »
I recently had my steering column restored.  Unfortunately, the steering column sticker was too far gone to be salvaged.  Does any know if these are reproduced?  And if so who?   Much appreciated.

Not absolute - but a good reference list:  http://www.67z28.com/finishes.htm

Not sure if you have Jerry McNeish's books - well worth getting for this information and additional details about the cars.

Also, if you search on the site for the specific component finishes you're seeking, there is usually a post.

How about a dark green firewall - replicate this or?   Appears the factory ran out of black and used next closest color.   Yes, it's original - note the chalk marks on the driver side cowl.

Makes sense Jerry.  Thanks for the clarification.   I'm very pleased with the way the engine was restored by you.

The photo details of your horn relay aren't great however from what I can see it appears the case is bright zinc or even polished. I can't see if it has the correct stamping however here is what it should look like.

Interesting - it appears SBMiano and yours have clear connectors while the horn relay on my '69 Z 04B is has a black connector (I assume it's orginal) - not sure which is correct or if both are - maybe that's the issue?

General Discussion / Re: Jerry MacNeish - Fire

Sorry to hear Jerry.   I enjoyed meeting you at your shop last year.   Hope you get the shop rebuilt quickly and can salvage some of the NOS components.   Glad to hear you got the cars out!

Edgemontvillage was referring to the engine orange on the head surface between the valve cover and intake manifold... ie. the upper part of the machined surface for intake gasket...  which normally would not get painted on such an engine (with aluminum manifold and aluminum valve covers)..

I really don't know.  I'd be curious to get Jerry MacNeish's input - he restored the engine back to factory spec.

Hans did you paint the intake and thermostat housing?

No, that's natural aluminum for both.  Jerry restored both using his aluminum restoration process.  He also did the valve covers and distributor.    The above picture was taken the day I received it back (late January this year).

Not the clearest picture, but this gives you an idea what the shouldered bolt looks like.  Jerry MacNeish rebuilt/restored the engine.

Here's a close-up of the idler arm from my Z (04B, Van Nuys Build).   Note hole for cotter pin and "C" stamp.  Car had about 70,000 miles on it, all SoCal.  No reason to believe it or any suspension components were replaced (many still had original factory markings).

My thoughts are early cars are phosphated and later cars are painted.Grey phosphated looks way better/but not as durable.Plus paint/powder coating hides rust pits ect.. Powder coating doesn't belong anywhere on a 69 Camaro. All powder coating is a cheap cover up.

Or multiple vendors were used and GM's supplier spec was vague with regarding to finish requirement leaving it to the vendor to decide.   Also, totally agree with Power Coating or POR 15 for that matter for back to stock restorations as a no-no.   I'm even painting my '69 Z in Lacquer!
