Restoration / Re: advice on painting cowl
« on: December 28, 2015, 04:58:44 AM »
What kind of paint are you using?

Here's the shifter pieces I had plated.   Can't absolutely verify they are 100% factory correct, but I had everything re-plated on the best evidence I had when I inspected each bolt and shifter piece.

And finally, regarding - 11. Shifter Body to Adaptor Plate Bolts and Washers (2 x 2) - Manganese Phosphate ?

I think the main center one is Silver Cad as best I can tell when I cleaned it up and the lower bolt is a dark Phosphate.

Here's a pic before plating:

Regarding these:

9. Adapter Plate bolts as best I can tell were Mag Phosphate.   After clean-up they were quite dark and did not show any hint of Silver Cad.

More - here's another picture of the shifter levers (Items 6 and 7 from the list) - you can clearly see the yellow hue for the forward shifter levers and for the Item 7 - Reverse Shifter Lever - it was dark phosphate.  No hint of silver zinc anywhere.   These are original to my Z, 04B, LA build.

Finished shifter - installed:

Lloyd  - regarding the shifter levers, mine had hints of yellow zinc/cad.    I had them re-plated with full yellow zinc.

6. Shifter Levers 1-2 and 3-4 - Yellow Zinc (or Cadmium?)

Lloyd -

If I compare the pulley you are considering to the HBC Repro, I would be concerned, though the picture is not very clear.   It appears the originals have a finer font for the stampings

Here's another claimed original that sold on Yenko.net:

Tough call, but thinner fonts seem to be original.

Here's some pics of the original PS Pulley on my Z for reference:

Unfortunately, it's attached to the pump and I can't easily remove it to weight it.

Originality / Re: 69 Gas Caps revisited - original Cap?

'69 Van Nuy's Z.  04B.   Ears with what appears to be GM or SM stamp.  No idea if it's original.

To add to the database table - mine has the Rubber Seal with ears.   I'll post pictures this evening.

Jerry did the valve covers for my Z as well (rebuilt and restored the engine/trans as well).

Here's a few pics to show how they turned out:

Hans, Rick Nelson is well known with the Chevelle community and a great person to talk to and as you found out does outstanding work.

Totally agree.  He also restored the power steering pump and original tie rods for my Z.   I was on a biz trip out in Illinois so drove down to his shop, chatted it up and had a nice dinner with Rick and his wife across the street.   Super nice guy and top notch work.   Highly recommend him for restoration work.   He goes the extra mile to ensure its factory correct in every detail.

Thanks Chick.   Makes sense that the bolt may have been swapped when they attached the brake bracket.  I think I'll remove and phosphate plate the bolt.

Good to hear the different bolt in rear axle cover has been verified.   I also confirmed that mine has the washer underneath the bolt as well.

Question - what would be the correct finish for just that one unique bolt in the rear end cover plate?

Natural/phosphated or black paint?   I assumed black paint as I assumed the bolt was in place when the axle assembly was painted.

But the brake line/boss support bracket was added after paint - so was the bolt added after paint as well and should be natural/phosphated??
