General Discussion / Re: 69 original rear bumper identification
« on: March 03, 2016, 04:12:09 AM »
Hans and everyone, those rivets do not look correct to me for what my rivets looked like or have observed on other cars. Maybe I'm missing something! As you mentioned Hans the big deal is finding a press big enough. I'm in that boat now as we have original looking rivets but have to press in after our bumper was re-chromed.
I have an original 1968 rear bumper with the riveted bracket and the backside is not flat as shown on the 69 bumper. But I would not assume all rivets are identical. I'll have to dig through old bumper stock to see what I can reference for 69.

Another reason to save every parts car and POS that comes along and toss it into inventory.

Hans L rivets look factory to me.

I'm assuming Chick is referring to the HBC reproductions not the rivets on the bumper pics I posted above. Regarding the rivets shown in the pics I posted  - I have no reason to believe they are not factory originals.

I'd also assume that whatever press is used, the pressed rivet result may not always look the same.   There is quite a bit a variability just between the two on my bumper.

And it appears you can buy reproduction rivets - just not sure where you can get them pressed in:

I can't tell you if it's original or not, but agree with William it looks to be original.  For reference, here's what the rivets look like.   Your's could have been drilled out for re-chroming purposes.

Missed this poll the first time around so just "voted" and added my Z/28 w/RS equipment, factory installed to the tally.   Documented on the  chassis broadcast copy as RS equipped.

General Discussion / Re: van nuys fire wall markings

Just for reference, my 04B Van Nuys Z also has grease pen markings on the drivers side cowl area.   It was applied after paint.    I didn't find any other markings on the firewall.

Restoration / Re: now the front springs....
« on: March 01, 2016, 08:25:27 PM »
When I see coil springs I shiver. I don't know what you are planning to use as a compressor but I highly do not recommend the type that hook inside like monkey arms. I've used that type and during compression the spring violently unwound. This has happened twice in the same day to boot. I recommend the OTC 7045B spring compressor. It costs a little more but well worth it for safety as well as piece of mind when handling them while compressed.

I'm just saying....

Mike

Totally agree.  I bought one of these from Rick's and made a scary job quite safe and easy:   http://www.rickscamaros.com/coil-spring-compressor-1955-1972.html

Restoration / Re: 302 Valve Cover refinish
« on: February 19, 2016, 06:52:23 PM »

Hans, great looking but wonder why the bell housing bolts not painted? Simple fix!
On valve covers does it not seem many of these restored valve covers look too much like a alum intake and that is not what I remember or have seen on survivors. I have a pair of nos with dated box Jan1970 and they have a type of smooth kind of satin look, not shiny, but not that alum intake look either. Skips 09D late Z have same look, that being of a smooth not dull not shiny look.

Good catch!   Yes, the bellhousing bolts will be painted before the subframe is installed to the body.  Had to buy the Seymour Orange Paint that Jerry used to ensure an exact match.

When he was advertising on ebay, the stamped hoses were priced at  $300-$400   IIRC....  (too rich for my blood at the time.. and now... :)

I paid nowhere near those amounts.  :)

His name is Tommy Mathison.  I have his contact info if anyone needs it, but no idea if he still makes them.   I discussed re-stenciling mine as well with Tommy, but I think they are too far gone.

I replaced my originals a year or two ago when I went thru my brake system (my originals were actually in a bit better condition than yours Hans!).. :)  .. but my car had been stored in my garage since 1980.
Anyway, 1969 originals were 'single crimped' whereas newer (current) safety requirements require 'double crimping' on the ends, so your new 'reproduction' hoses may have reproduction markings, but will have double crimped ends (for safety).  I bought new hoses, but not the expensive reproductions, as I can't see that sort of expense simply to maintain a vehicle in functional order (my car is unrestored).

Makes total sense.   You can see why I didn't re-use the ones on my car!

Reproduction hose installed - note hose crimping styles differ from originals.

For reference, here's what the original brake hoses look like from my 04B Van Nuys Built Z:

Sub Frame Fitting - note the crimping style is different than current DOT requirements:

Caliper Block Fitting - again crimping style differs from current DOT required hoses:

Note the lettering/markings on the hose line in red font:

Note the faint red stripe along the other side of this brake hose:

I bought a set from directly from Tommy Mathison back in April of 2014.  Same as NoYenko (George) posted above.   The hose markings looked exact compared to my worn originals.

Not sure if its OK to post his email address on this site.  I can send you a PM with his contact info if you are interested.

Originality / Re: YH Wheel Date
« on: January 12, 2016, 04:54:13 AM »
My 04B Van Nuy's built Z had a Jan YH wheel  (K-1-9 1 28) for the spare.   The other wheels were replaced over the years.

Restoration / Re: Firewall Sealer

Old thread, but found this in a search for "9980664 Sealer".   Per the AIM, (UPC 0, D5, page 21),  the 9980664 sealer is applied for many of the firewall openings.

It appears the recommended "the Lord Fusor 800EZ" is different than the sealer the JohnZ refers to that was applied by Chevrolet for the firewall areas.

So the questions:
1. What is a good OE equivalent sealer for "9980664"?
2. I assume it was applied by a sealant gun vs brushed on as brushing it on for a grommet opening doesn't really make sense, correct or?

Thanks!

Hans
