Restoration / need help identifying sheet metal parts
« on: August 10, 2014, 02:06:04 AM »
A friend of mine recently picked up a 68 convertible Camaro.  It needs some TLC and he has just gotten started on rust repair.

Today he sent me an email:

email 1:

I am stumped on a body repair:  When I cut off the rusty part of the left quarter panel, there are two body parts rear of the wheel housing that I don’t know the name of, and can’t find them illustrated in the 400 page manual or the sheet metal catalogs for heartbeat or Rick’s.

One of the parts goes from the trunk floor extension to the quarter panel.  Not the part that goes under the cocktail shaker, the part outboard from there.  I bought trunk floor extensions, but they don’t have that last 6 inches to reach the quarter panel.

The other part goes vertically down from there, is welded at the back to the tail panel and at the top to the part described above.  It then connects with the quarter panel near the tail pipe.

email 2:

No, not the frame rail.  Two sheet metal parts, one inside the trunk going from the trunk floor pan extension horizontally the rest of the way to the quarter panel (photos 2 & 5, 4 is the good one that is already on the passenger side).  The other is vertical, going from that part down to the bottom of the quarter panel ending by the tail pipe (photo 1 & 3).

Any help would be appreciated!

Originality / Does this 67 undercarriage look unrestored?
« on: November 27, 2012, 02:26:25 PM »
A friend of mine has a 1967 396 SS.  I believe he has had it for about 20 years.

The exhaust was replaced with a Gardner.

Does the undercarriage/body of the car look unrestored?

Here are two youtube videos.  I have more if needed.

Originality / Exterior Door Handle - Chrome
« on: September 26, 2012, 07:38:22 PM »
I have seen a lot of JohnZ's posts where bumpers were not "Show Chromed".  Is the same true for exterior door handles?  Were the door handles "Factory Chromed"?

I want to send my 69Z handles out to be rechromed.  Paul's Chrome www.paulschrome.com said they only do "Show Chrome" for door handles.

note: This is probably already well known, but the shaft that goes into the button is press fit on.  I held the flat part of the shaft with a vise, put a pair of pliers near the knob and gently tapped on the pliers to take the button off the shaft.  I measured the entire length from the top the button to the end of the shaft first.
The total length is approx 3 1/8" long (79 mm).

When I send them out to be rechromed I am going to ask them to mask off the hole that the shaft goes into.

This is the best fit for a $279.95 reproduction 1969 Endura Bumper.  Blech.

General Discussion / Placke Chevrolet
« on: August 17, 2012, 06:25:57 PM »
My 1969 Z/28 was bought out of Placke Chevrolet in St. Louis MO.

Today, I recieved a picture of the building and of Donald Placke.   ;D  ;D  ;D

The picture was titled "Mr. Hartman with Don Placke at Placke Chevrolet Company.  Negative by Edward Goldberger, 1954".

I believe that Don Placke is still alive in St. Louis MO and that as of August 2012, he is 86 years old.

If this is correct, he was 28 when the picture was taken 58 years ago.

That means that Donald C Placke is the gentleman in the dark suit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I believe that 1968RSZ28's car also came from Placke Chevrolet.

Originality / Original 1969 Z/28 air cleaner base?
« on: April 26, 2012, 02:30:33 AM »
The place restoring my 1969 Z/28 repainted the air cleaner base.  Is this an original base for a 01B (2nd week Jan 69) flat hood Z28?

Originality / original A212CW for a 69 01B
« on: March 31, 2012, 04:51:45 AM »
For a 1969 Z/28, 2nd week of January (01B) what A212CW filter is correct?  JohnZ has posted A212CW photos on this site in the past, but the links do not work any more.

It looks like #1 and #2 match, but #3 is very different with the straight wire.

Originality / Original radiator cap?
« on: March 25, 2012, 03:19:44 AM »
I have been going through parts that came with my 01B 1969 Z and one of the parts is the radiator cap.  Is this an original cap?  The rivet on top looks odd and why is there a hole in one of the ears?

Originality / 69 Starter Nose color
« on: February 04, 2012, 04:14:16 AM »
Are 69 Starter noses supposed to be painted black?

Specifically, # 1108367.  On HBC, there are two:

Dec 9 1968, HBC #1577

May 10 1968, HBC #1576

Which one is correct?

Originality / 69 Camaro Horns
« on: February 02, 2012, 08:49:00 PM »
I think my 2nd week of January 69Z has the original horns but I am not 100% certain.

The one marked 9000290 has two circles with an "H" inside each circle for high note.  One circle w/"H" is inside the horn and the other circle w/"H" is on the outside.

The one marked 9000289 has the two circles but does not have anything inside the circles.  Should there be a "L" inside the circles?

pictures of 9000289, date 8K1= 1968, Nov, 1st week:

pictures of 9000290, date 8C3 (blurry, but I think it's a C) = 1968, March, 3rd week

Can anyone with a 69 Camaro confirm if their Low note horn has an "L" on it?

Originality / 69 Z28 valve cover hardware
« on: January 29, 2012, 03:52:16 AM »
For a 69 Z/28 built the 2nd week of January (don't know if that matters) what is the correct valve cover hardware?

I have done a lot of searches, but I am not sure if it is supposed to have retainers.

On the HBC website, they list a package for 69's with a 302 except aluminum covers: http://www.heartbeatcitycamaro.com/store/product/13856/Camaro-Valve-cover-retainers-%26-bolts-67-68-69/ and these have retainers.  All Z/28's have a 302 with aluminum covers so I am not sure what is correct.

Originality / Dash Panel Mystery
« on: January 21, 2012, 06:04:53 PM »
A few weeks ago I bought a sheet metal "PANEL, INSTRUMENT" part number: 8716458, group: 10.230

When it came in, it looked like a section was removed.  It did not match the original dash panel that was in the car.

It looked like this:

I became upset and returned the dash panel to the seller.

Now, I see another different NOS dash panel on EBay that looks identical to the one I returned

EBay Dash Panel

EBay auction: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1969-Camaro-N-O-S-Dash-Panel-/320830957170?hash=item4ab303e672&item=320830957170&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

My original dash panel looks like this:

Did the over the counter dash panels have that section removed for some reason???

Originality / GM Heritage Center Documentation / Underbody color
« on: January 06, 2012, 02:14:52 AM »
I am not sure if this info has been posted but these documents have a lot of GREAT info:

1967 http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/docs/Camaro/1967-Chevrolet-Camaro.pdf

1968 http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/docs/Camaro/1968-Chevrolet-Camaro.pdf

1969 http://gmheritagecenter.com/gm-heritage-archive/docs/Camaro/1969-Chevrolet-Camaro.pdf

For a long time, I have been curious about what color the underside of a 1969 Camaro should be.  There were quite a few postings that the color black on the underside of a Norwood car is the stuff of showcars.  After reading page 49 (as labeled on the page) "Exterior Paint Process", I would tend to agree that original undersides were primer color.
