Decoding/Numbers / Re: 3917291 heads
« on: September 17, 2010, 08:57:31 PM »
According to Colvin's Chevrolet by the Numbers (1965-69), "This cylinder head was the change-over head in moving the temperature sending unit from the intake manifold to the cylinder head. The production of this head started in March/April 1967. All early #3917291 (1) heads dated from March to April will have the temperature sending unit boss, but it probably will not be drilled and tapped. Sometime in May or June of 1967 the boss was drilled and tapped in preparation for the 1968 model year." Hope that helps.

The GM part number was 546702 and it fit just about anything with gauges from 1963 through 1975. Not sure if this is still a good number or not.

Hey John, who makes the best reproduction fuel tanks for a 69? Thanks.

If you check the 69 assembly manual, U46  A2  page 425, you will see only 2 fiber optics for the front.  You cannot have three since the high beam and low beam are the same bulb.

I would do a proper alternator check. By this I mean to disassemble it and electrically test each component. Sounds like a possible diode problem (always check diodes with a diode tester not an ohm meter).  Always remember, new means new, and does not necessarily mean good.

I was taught something about 40 years ago .............. New means new, but new does not necessarily mean good.  This even has more meaning in this day and age with most of the parts (including GM) being produced offshore.

Kurt, are you sure Denise or Brenda won't hurt the tag? I heard they can be pretty rough..........  :)
Thanks again for all the help.

One more question on this subject.  What is a good stripper that won't hurt the aluminum tag?  Thanks for all the input guys.

Restoration / What to do with Fisher Body tag?

I am in the process of doing a total restoration to my 1969 RS/SS 350 Convertible and I need some input as to what to do with the Fisher Body tag. Should I remove it to restore the firewall? and then refinish the tag, Or do I tape it off and work around it? Or do I leave it attached, strip it and paint it with the rest of the firewall? What is the proper way to do this? Thanks.

Restoration / Re: 1969 L48 Automatic Exhaust Manifolds
« on: February 23, 2010, 01:36:47 AM »
Thanks for the numbers. If I squint, turn my head a little, and hold my mouth just right, I can see those numbers in my manifolds. Well, should I bead blast the manifolds, paint with exhaust manifold grey and move to the next parts (after all they are the original manifolds)? Or try to find a better pair. Any comments are welcome. Thanks.

Restoration / 1969 L48 Automatic Exhaust Manifolds
« on: February 21, 2010, 04:09:03 AM »
I am finally in the process of restoring my 69 RS/SS 350 convertible after owning it 33 years.  I have a question about the exhaust manifolds.  I removed them from the car today and tried to read the numbers on them. I know they are original as I purchased the car from the first owner. The car spent it's first eight years in New England and the manifold numbers are very difficult (if not impossible) to read.  Can anyone tell me what the numbers are supposed to be and if they would keep these manifolds or try to find a less pitted set. Thanks.

Heads were cast after engine was built (Aug 1969 heads on a Feb 1969 build). Could be correct for 302 but not for the build date.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Question about Fisher Body date
« on: February 17, 2010, 08:43:41 PM »
Thanks to all for your help. I now have a pretty good understanding about the build of my car.  I also understand that records are no better than the one who keeps them. Chevrolet and Fisher Body didn't keep good records, but those were the times.  Guess we must do the best with what we have. Good research can fill in some of the blanks, but I think there will always be questions. Thanks again.

My car's VIN is 124679N552528.  According to production figures at Norwood, it was the 666th car built in December. How many cars a day were being produced at that time? Would this number put the car out around December 4th? If that is close, then I would guess that the 11D on my Fisher Body tag was from the week of Nov 25 to Nov 30. Am I thinking correctly? I appreciate all the input!!

My 1969 RS/SS L48 has a silver with a red bowtie Tonawanda sticker on the right (passenger side) valve cover. The engine was made at the Tonawanda plant.
