Decoding/Numbers / Re: Question about Fisher Body date
« on: February 09, 2010, 05:36:01 PM »
OK, lets say the last day of any month ended on a Wednesday, the build date of a car built that week through Wednesday would be MMd or e (depending on the number of weeks in that month, partial or whole). The cars built the next day(Thursday, 1st of new month) would be MMa. So in answer to your question 11A would be just for the one day(November 1st) and 11D would be the 18th - 22nd. IMO

Rally wheels were stock on the Z/28, as were front discs, and optional on other models.

Keep it stock, if it still is, and resto it if it needs it. I have a 68 z/28 that I'm restoring and finding original parts is a full time job in itself.

OK, say you have an all original 68 z/28, numbers matching etc, and 1 day your out driving it and 'wamo' something happens to the engine and the block is damaged, lets say beyond repair, what would you do? What if the block was repairable ie; crack repaired, cylinder sleeved etc., and you had to have it decked, what then? Restamp it? What if one of the cylinder heads got damaged beyond repair and you found a date coded matching cylinder head, and put that on the motor, would it still be 'original'? I have seen on E-Bay and other on-line sources where a seller claims that the car is all original and sells for big $$$ and then reviewing some of the pictures accompaning the ad you see a part you know is not original, that blows 'numbers matching' right out the window. Another point, what if someone 'upgrades' the internals of the motor ie; rods pistons, cam etc.?

Restoration / replacement 302 block

If one was to find a 3914678(68 Z./28) replacement block with a casting date code that was 1 - 4 weeks before the cars build date and then had it decked and restamped  with the vin and asmbly date codings, would that be considered still 'numbers matching'? Also the original crank, pistons etc were used in the rebuild and those part numbers and dates match.

"Appears factory to me" NOT! If it was factory it would have 2 bolt mains. I downloaded the picture of the bottom side and then blew it up. It's plain to see it's a 2 bolt. It doesn't look like the splash pan is bolted down and could be removed for pictures. Also the vin #'s coincide with assembly date but the 'O' in 'MO' looks funny. The only thing factory 68 Z/28 on this motor is 'possibly the block/crank' and intake, the heads, pistons, carburetor, valve covers etc are NOT! So it comes down to this, its this a legit 68 Z/28 MO 302 BLOCK?

Thanks John, Is there any date or dates stamped on the car when it rolled off the line? Also, where can I get a list of all the part numbers that made up the short block for a 68 Z/28(April68)?
