General Discussion / 3917610 Intake Manifold
« on: February 17, 2010, 05:31:36 PM »
I've been looking for a 3917610 Intake Manifold for some time now and some that I've seen have a portion of the middle section(below carburator area) cut out. Any reason for this? Racers trick? Better fuel distribution?

General Discussion / 3917291 heads
« on: February 12, 2010, 05:25:46 PM »
Does anyone know if GM had a slow-down period of casting the 3917291 heads? I've been looking for a set dated mid March 68, and it seems like there are lots of 67 castings and 68 May-June, but Jan Feb  and March 68 castings are almost non existant.

Did the original rally wheel trim ring have a slotted or round hole for the valve stem?

Restoration / replacement 302 block
« on: February 02, 2010, 07:37:01 PM »
If one was to find a 3914678(68 Z./28) replacement block with a casting date code that was 1 - 4 weeks before the cars build date and then had it decked and restamped  with the vin and asmbly date codings, would that be considered still 'numbers matching'? Also the original crank, pistons etc were used in the rebuild and those part numbers and dates match.

Decoding/Numbers / block build date

OK, the blocks build date is usually about 2 weeks ahead of cowl tag date, what would the dates of the carburator, distributor, alternator etc be? Would they be closer to the block build date or the cowl date ?

General Discussion / Cowl Tag vs Vin #
« on: January 25, 2010, 01:38:07 AM »
The starting body assembly date on my 68 Z/28 cowl tag is 04A(April 1st week) and my VIN # is 123478N4 _ _ _ _ 5( I deleted 4 numbers for security) and according to the numbers posted on this web site, the VIN # calculates to the fact that the car was completed the 8th day of April 68. The calculations were made using the last VIN # produced for March 68 and the last VIN # produced for April 68. For the month of April 68 18,227 units were built, and using a 5 day work week there were 22 work days in April 68, this means around 830 +/- units were built per day((3 shifts). Now if the VIN # were sequencial by 1, I multiplied the 830 units per day X 8 = 6640, I added that to the VIN # of the last unit built in March 68 and my VIN # falls into that range. I do not have the origional motor to check the assembly date stamped on it which would have helped in determining the final production date. My reason for doing this is because I am restoring my Z to origional matching numbers and the only thing that is not original is the motor, as mentioned before, and in my search for the parts I have to find them with the right casting dates. The correct casting dates would be within 10 days of the final assembly date. IF YOU FIND THIS IN ERROR PLEASE REPLY, THANKS.

Is there any reasoning that a (1) is sometimes coded as a roman numeral (capital i)?

The 3917291 heads come in two types, one comes with 2.02/1.60 valves and the other comes with 1.94/1.50 valves., both are 64cc.Does anyone know if the castings are the same and they are just ground for the different size valves?

Restoration / 327 crankshaft
« on: January 23, 2010, 02:56:08 AM »
Did Chevrolet make a 327 in 1968 with a large journal crank? Casting # 3914678. I found a 327 on E-bay with that casting number but stamped vin says it was from "J" plant.

Mild Modifications / 1st generation 68 z/28 distributor
« on: January 23, 2010, 01:00:46 AM »
If I can't find an origional Z/28 distributor # 1111467  what would be my next choice? A 67 Z/28 distributor #1111266 or a 69 Z/28 # 1111480, keeping in mind that I'm trying to stick as close to origional as I can. Or does anyone have a lead on a 1111467?
