I probably saw that some time ago but forgot about it.  Thanks for the reminder.

Restoration / Under-dash assembly steps
« on: July 16, 2010, 08:59:16 PM »
I'm about to start putting all of the under-dash stuff in my 67.  Only a few switches are installed now so before I start I thought I'd quiz you guys on what the best procedure might be.  By that I mean in what order should I install the parts?  I believe I saw in someone's pictures that they put the heater control assembly in first.

Restoration / Removing front clip- best procedure
« on: July 13, 2010, 08:46:57 PM »
I'm about to remove the front clip from my 67.  I need to redo some things that the body shop got a little sloppy on.  Anyway, since the car has been painted I'm a bit nervous about removing body parts, much less the whole front clip.

Can some of you tell me the best procedure for removing the thing.  I'm assuming it would be best to remove the entire clip as a unit.  I'd feel better getting advice from those who have done it before rather than wing it.  I know some of you have done it many times.

Thanks.

Beautiful car Paul.  It looks like you have an option that I have on my own 67.  I have a question about that.

I noticed you have the rear speaker option.  I haven't seen one up close so I was wondering about how they were done originally.  I see the speaker grill.  I need to find one of those, but what about the package tray underneath?  Is it perforated on one side?  Is there a oval hole cut there or what?  I'd like to set mine up correctly.

Thanks.

Restoration / Re: 67 Quadrajet question...........
« on: July 08, 2010, 09:14:13 PM »
Well, I said I'd get back on this.  It's been extremely hard to get much work done on the 67 but I finally got something accomplished.

I took the quadrajet to a local retired mechanic I know.  Back in the day he got some training on the Q-Jet from GM.  He said there was some tarnish and corrosion inside.  I provided him with a rebuld kit and new float when I took it to him.  He cleaned it out, used whatever he needed from the rebuild kit, used the new float, and brought it over today.  We installed it, fired it up, and he adjusted it.  Now it runs just fine.  The engine is still breaking in and he said it sounds really good.

I bought the carb about 12 years ago.  I collected parts for years in preparation for the eventual restoration.  It was completely rebuilt and looking like new but I had to leave it sit all of this time until I was ready to use it.  That obviously wasn't good but I really didn't have much choice.  The engine sounds great and now I can actually be in the garage while the car is running.  Until now I couldn't stand next to the car for more than a few minutes while it was running because the fumes were so bad, and that's with the car backed up to a 16' door.  It was really bad.

One of these days I might actually be able to drive this thing.

Thanks to all of those that were interested and tried to help.

Thanks Stillwater.  That old 67 Camaro was my very first car and I've owned it since 1975.  As you noticed it was in very bad condition when I started the restoration.  It's not as original as I'd like but I wanted to get it as "correct" as I possibly could.  The paint matches the original colors, including the black stripes and vinyl top with the black deluxe interior.  It's a genuine RS/SS small block 4 speed so I figured why not go with the original specs.  I'd hoped to have it done by now because I also have a 57 Belair to work on.  I'm pretty much working alone so it's taking a long time to finish.  Thanks for your compliments.

My working hours sometimes make it hard for me to get on something right away.  I will definitely post the results of my work but it might take a little while.  I appreciate the help.

Restoration / 67 Quadrajet question...........
« on: November 10, 2009, 10:02:53 AM »
I have a newly rebuilt 67 SS350 engine.  Pretty much everything on the engine is new or rebuilt, including the quadrajet.  It starts and idles nicely, the timing has been set,  but the quadrajet still needs work.  I wanted to ask those of you that have dealt with this a question before I proceed.

Though the engine starts and idles nicely it produces terrible fumes.  It doesn't smoke, but even with the back of the car by the garage door which is wide open you can't stay in the room with the car while it's running because the fumes are so bad.  There really isn't much on the outside of the carb to adjust so should I anticipate that the carb is not functioning properly and will probably need to be removed and repaired?

As I said, the carb was rebuilt but it sat for a long time until I was ready to use it.

Thanks for a great suggestion.  I was hesitant to even ask but I've never had one fight me like this.

Restoration / Trans install question
« on: September 20, 2009, 09:10:27 PM »
I'm still working on the 67 RS/SS I've mentioned here before.  I do most of the work by myself out in the garage, as I'm sure a lot of you do.  I've called in help when I needed two or three sets of hands, like removing the hood or installing the Muncie.  Which is what leads me to my question.

I picked up a transimission jack so that I could attempt to install the Muncie by myself this time.  It was in once but I had to remove it to address a couple of issues.  I've always done this the hard way with two of us under the car to lift it into place.  Now I'm using the jack and the trans seems to be hanging up and not going in all the way.  I don't want to break an ear on the case so I'm hesitant to crank the mounting bolts too tight but it seems like the thing just doesn't want to go that last 1/4" to 3/8" (more or less).  I've tried several ways to get it to go but it still seems to hang up.

Any suggestions or wisdom from some of you veterans that have done this many times before?  I'd sure appreciate it.

Restoration / Re: 67 steering column plastic cover

I just sprayed it with some black paint for plastic.  I think that will do.  I was just hoping they might be available somewhere.

Thanks, but that's not the piece I'm talking about.  I didn't word my question very well.  I'm talking about the flimsy plastic piece that you literally wrap around the steering column near the firewall.  I tried to clean mine up but only made it worse.  I could always scuff it up and paint it but I'll get a new piece if I can.

In this picture you can see the cross-hatch area of the column under the dash.

Does anyone know where to get a replacement for the plastic cover?

Here is a picture of mine which is a stock setup.  This one has the sealed base so I'm using the vented oil filler cap, which is correct.  Crankcase ventilation is from a hose that runs from a fitting behind the intake manifold to the carb with a pcv valve inline.
