Just a thought - Might not be an "8"...... It might be a "B" for blue interior?

Muffler hangar bracket is my guess.

There does not appear to be any frame rail reinforcement plate for the drivers side exhaust hangar in that picture.  The block stamp surface looks suspect but it is hard to see the detail.

Not much.... especially if the VIN is on a "hot list".  That would be my biggest fear on one of these "Barn Finds".  :)

Originality / Re: 68 Z Timing Cover
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:42:49 PM »
I believe the "swap meet" cover is actually made for the (smaller diameter) base engine dampener.  The cover itself is the same either way but the timing tab would need to be welded farther away (and flipped around) to fit the bigger diameter HP damper. The spot welds are in the same place either way but the welds would be "under" the tab for the big damper and "above" the damper for the smaller base engine damper. The 90° bend in the timing tab would be in the opposite direction if you look at the pix.

Restoration / Re: Original versus New Sheet Metal

If you are not sure if you want to fix the original panel - FIX IT.

Repro will take longer and look worse in the end to the experienced eye.  Some cars are worth NOS and some are arguably not.  Buy the best metal you can afford or are willing to pay from my experience.

I would not get too hung up on the orange paint.  You see incidental overspray on lots of original parts and some of that paint might actually be original.  Lots of stuff happens to all parts over the course of 45 years.  JMO.

Too rich for my wallet and too nice for my car but....That IS a nice looking distributor.  :)

I have that same "LG7" yellow crayon marks on my rear bulkhead. "LG" is "Light Green" interior color.  "7" is for the x-77 trim.  The car I have was a light green color custom trim level car built 10A of '68

"My" interpretation of this mark - The Fisher body line needed a clue of what color to spray the interior areas that are visible once the car is finished. The light green interior color will show through the air vents and probably other places so they had to paint that before the interior trim was installed.  THe CRG has not weighed in on this but that is my best guess.  You and I are close in build week so it makes sense to me that they were marking them that way at that time.

The black magic marker lettering is a new one to me.  I doubt it was factory markings but who knows.

I used "Re-Pops" brand on my '69 with the Custom Interior option and they fit about 95%.  There was an issue with the inside rear quarter fuzzy that I was able to modify to my acceptance.  The tips "might" have ben be a little sharper than original parts but I am sure I reworked them before I installed them.  It has been some time and my recolection may be "fuzzy" as well.  Used the proper bend-it-yourself staples to install the door fuzzies and it came out good enough for me.  I would seek them out if I ever need another set as they seemed to be a better choice in reproduction fuzzies.

I think you will need to score some of those from a body shop supply house.  You could pull some off a boneyard car if you are worried about exact originality. Add some sealer to the inside of the nuts.

I would beef up the 10-bolt and beat the crap out of it before I would try to put a 12 bolt or something else in there.   Save the money and headaches and just fix what you have now.  JMO

If you ever had the "experience" of driving a first gen with the original mount failed you would remember it.....as long as you survived it. :)

The throttle linkage would bind in the WOT position and the car would just roar away down the road ..... nothing short of turning off the ignition key would stop it. WHEEEE!!!!!!

It just looked like some stupid add-on to me when I looked under the hood so why leave it on there????? I just threw it in the trash.  -HA!  NOW I KNOW WHY IT WAS PUT THERE.

Repair it if you can.  The carpet is easier to replace than you think and comes out nice.
