General Discussion / Swap Meet Scores
« on: April 14, 2015, 07:50:32 PM »
Went to the semi-local swap meet at the Santa Rosa, CA Veterans hall last Sunday. About 25 minutes from me. Found a nice set of used Michelins all season Radials for my 15 X 7 wheels. With about 80 to 90 percent tread left to burn. Also picked up 2 YS rally wheels for $40! $20 a wheel, couldn't pass it up.  ;D  They are 15 X 6 so maybe someone will want them, and I can put them in the trade pile or sell them off for MCACN travel money. That code says '68 - '70 El Camino. There back space is 3.5 inches. My DF's are 4-1/16th. And lastly I was looking inside a small glass case and spotted a shift knob that resembled mine. I remember how the 4 is cocked and stamped a little weird on original knobs. Scored it REAL cheap!  ;) So cheap I can't say.. And it's in very nice condition. I pulled my knob to compare and noticed they are two different sizes. maybe 5/16ths and 3/8ths? I didn't have time to check. Found a couple for sale online for $150 and $195 in about the same condition. Did all this in 45 minutes on a beautiful 74 degree day. I walked ALL of the Turlock meet and found NOTHING off my list. And it was 40 degrees all day with a slight wind chill!. I guess ya just never know. Danny

Restoration / Rally Wheel Paint
« on: April 10, 2015, 04:47:06 PM »
Looking for a rally wheel paint that is ready to go in a spray can. Just going to shoot the 15 X 7's I just got. Doesn't have to be exact. Just something that looks somewhat close to the original finish. I have found 6 different ones?? OER has one, Summit has one, there are many . And price ranged from 11 bucks a can all the way up to nearly $40 a can. Is the low dollar stuff any good?.. Danny

Was the trunk spare, balanced from the factory? Did they even bother doing that? Should I put a "Micro" weight on there? Danny

General Discussion / Accepted for the 2015 MCACN.. YAY!!
« on: April 06, 2015, 04:39:35 PM »
Well, my car has been accepted for judging in the Legends class in Nov. I have paid my fee and I am on the roster.  ;D  I feel honored to be chosen, as they only pick around 15 cars. Going to have it trailered out by Reliable. Booked my room at the O'Hare Double Tree last night. Got the LAST room of the MCACN block of rooms. Whole deal with flights, car shipped, room, etc. is going to run in the 5 to $6000 range.. OUCH! Shipping the car out is of course the biggie. Selling off all my car parts I was keeping for trade value, along with a bunch of personal stuff to help raise the money to pay the CC's. I don't have very many parts but what I DO have should raise 2 or 3K.. I will make it happen... Good Times ahead! Might have to sell the car at the show to make it home.. :D  ;)
Looking forward to meeting many of the CRG gang, and at the same time, seeing some of the best muscle cars in the world - In ONE Place. This will be my first time..
And I also want to thank Mr. Steve Shauger for all his work on this for the past 17 years or more. And for getting me all plugged in for this great event.
Last but not least.. Please post here if you are going... Danny

General Discussion / Air Cleaner Stud '69 ?
« on: April 05, 2015, 06:13:52 PM »
I was told years ago that this was an original Chevrolet air cleaner stud for 1969. Would this also be correct for '68, or late '68? ... Danny

General Discussion / Delco Energizer Y-55 Battery
« on: March 31, 2015, 11:14:43 PM »
Scored a correct reverse + -  Y-55 Delco Energizer Battery  ;D  It has never been charged, empty NOS. Spent a good hour getting it all cleaned up. Probably paid to much for it but I'll pay that CC later. Talking with Chick, I think I may heat up the label and remove it. I have not decided yet. He is under the impression that there was NO label on the assembly line batteries, and I think he is correct. And maybe even the yellow was not there either. Although I don't think we know that for sure yet. The battery is showing 1972 as it's first year to be punched on the tag. So I am assuming this is a late '71, very early '72. I may leave the tag, cause that just shows that it is an over the counter purchase. That matches my 55,000 original mile car. My car is not being restored, so it would probably have a label, Right?  Just like if the owner of the car went down and got a battery 4 or 5 years after buying the car. I need to learn how I am going to get the little wax stuff out, and what to put in it, and get it charged. I have already been offered 2K from a couple local Camaro friends. So who knows, that buys a lot of goodies!.. Danny

General Discussion / Ship my Car back to MCACN, or drive?
« on: March 31, 2015, 06:05:43 AM »
SO, I am snowballing ideas with the girlfriend about the MCACN show. I need to do the math and figure out what would be the best way to do this... Rent an SUV and trailer? I actually found a guy that rents enclosed 20 and 22 foot trailers down by Paul in San Jose for $60 and $70 a day. So I need that for 10 days, that's 6 or $700. Then I need to rent something to pull it at $500 a week, which will REALLY be 10 days. And who knows WHAT the mileage charge will be. Even at 22 cents a mile it's almost $1000, and that could be double, as it's probably 40 cents or more. Then gas and food and lodging back there from CA. Then turn around and do the same trip back!

OR, I ship my car back there and fly back and wait for it to arrive. That could be about $3,000 by itself for shipping alone both ways. Then a flight for two. What if the airports close and my car is sitting there. And I miss the show. And by the way, WHERE IS THERE?

Starting to sound like about 5K or more. But I sure would like to be back there for the 2015 show.

Any CRG'er near the show, that I could ship my car to your house? Then you hold it for me in your shop. Then I fly out and drive it to the show. Then we do the same in reverse for the trip home. Is this a possibility?

Or, leave the car home and fly out to the show and call it good. I really would like to have the car with me.. Danny

General Discussion / Rally Wheel Code AD
« on: March 28, 2015, 08:57:53 PM »
Just bought two rally's off CL about 15 miles from my house. The guy said they were both FW 15 X 7. When I got there and looked at them... one was an FW and the other was an AD code. He said they were a matched set, but the top edge on the AD is taller and it just looks different than the old Station Wagon/Monte Carlo FW's. It is dated K-1-8  10  24  AD. Went online and seen some for $300 each, and a couple even $500 each! What's the deal with these AD's?... Danny

General Discussion / What starting letter should my Plates have?
« on: February 25, 2015, 03:50:02 AM »
Looking to find some used original License plates for my 68 Camaro. Right now it has YKZ 821 plates which I believe are for a '69. Because the second owner bought the car 4/12/69 from a dealership. What do I need for my car that was first placed in service 6/18/68? Anybody have any original plates on there car with a close date to mine? What are the cutoff months for the different letters?.
How about these, Too Early? Too Late?, Just Right?.

My research has shown that the 1963-69 year-by-year, letter allocation plate issuance breakdown has some overlap, but plates beginning with the following letters generally correspond to the year of issue:  ABCD=1963, EFGHI=1964, JKLMN=1965, OPQRS=1966, TUVW=1967, WX = 1968 YZ=1969. This sound correct?? .. Danny
