General Discussion / Re: VIN search issue
« on: October 24, 2016, 03:27:54 AM »
I've recently come across a search problem that's baffling me.
You used to be able to search a VIN via Google and it would find it anywhere, if it existed. That no longer works, which devalues the orphan listings.
123377L100013 is on the orphan docs page. Search it (or any other VIN on that page) via Google and nothing comes up. The only way to find it is via the forum search function. Or via Bing.
Anyone have any insight? Anyone want to reach out to Google and ask why?
Hi Kurt.....I reported this to Google Search but have not received an answer yet.....but, I tried it now and it seems to work.  They must have fixed the problem.

General Discussion / Re: Windshield dam dimensions
« on: October 23, 2016, 06:12:20 PM »
As far as I know the original style that folded over is not available but the square dam is though. The urethane's may be better but I thought the sole purpose of the dam was to prevent the urethane from being seen from inside the car so it was more for aesthetics, I assume.

I would be interested in seeing the groove difference.

John....don't if this will help but here are a couple of links to the early (H1098C) as opposed to the later (P1098C) that will interchange in a pinch.

Jerry, sorry but I don't have any of the one you need.
Bryon....Thanks for the effort.  As I said earlier, I have this set of OEM B & S keys that will work just fine.

20
Jerry I may have an extra. Let me check and if I have one, I will let you know.
Bryon, rechecked my blanks and I have a set of B & S with knockouts for the "C" & "D" but I don't have any Rochester blanks.  My car has a B & S "C" and a Rochester "D" so I only need the Rochester "D" for an exact match.  Being I couldn't find any Rochester keys, I had settled on using the B & S but have not given up on finding the Rochester.

Thanks.....Jerry G.

John do they also have the earlier keys?
X2.....looking for the Rochester "D" and Briggs & Stratton "C" keys.

Jerry MacNeish states in his '69 Camaro Z/28 Fact Book,

"Full floating, forged-aluminum pistons were used in the '69 302 engine. 1969 pistons were actually introduced in late-production '68 Z/28s."

Jerry has probably seen the insides of original '69 302 engines more than most people.

jdv69z,

Thanks for you contribution. But, most/many pistons are manufactured with the grooves
in the piston boss to accommodate retainers.

Huh? OK, it's your turn. Show me evidence of a factory pressed pin piston with machined retainers grooves that were machined and then not used. So Chevrolet would only punch the holes necessary for a specific Camaro firewall, but they machined unnecessary grooves in pistons?  Stick a fork in me, I'm done.

Actually this was done at the factory.....not for 1969 302ci but for the 1968 302ci.  Upon tearing down my original 1968 Z engine (06-19-68 build date) I discovered that my engine had the 1969 version pistons (the ones with the pin lock grooves and straight across valve relief) and the 1968 version pressed pin "PINK" rods. Of course, there were no pin retainers used in the pistons.  Apparently they had already used up all the original design pistons but still had some of the pressed pin "PINK" rods left to use.

Good call. As the old saying goes......One picture is worth a thousand words.

Not for sure if this is Mike selling this car but it does have the same VIN that he stated.

Logroller.....I don't think tracking has any thing to do with this.  According to your VIN your car went through the assembly line in May 1969 and according to the engine numbers the engine was assembled in September 1969.  The figures don't add up correctly.

BTW.....are you the original owner of this car?

Decoding/Numbers / Re: Rear Axle housing Decode Help

Yes MC was used for some trucks/vans in the late 60s.

Not sure about 67 or 69 but yes for 68.

It appears that in this chart the "MC" is assigned to a Series 30 (G30) heavy duty axle.

Thanks guys. I would like to see high quality close up pics for comparison - please!
Hi Bryon...here are photos of the two different bolts used on the fender to firewall on my 1968 07C Z28.

#3857663 used to bolt the fender to the firewall...was also used to bolt the fender to the pillar.  I have a total of four bolts.

#3839741 used to bolt fender to top of cowl.....also used to bolt bottom of fender to bracket.  Have a total of four bolts.

Did you ever get a chance to compare the head markings in the fender to firewall bolts?

This is the pass side with the small diameter washer.

This bolt is identical to the one used on my car......there is a circle inside the recessed edge of the head and there are three slashes around the edge of the circle and the slashes only occupy one half of the circle.  Opposite the half with the slashes is an "S".

Hi Chick....I see you noticed the difference between the right and left bolt that attaches the fender to the firewall. Well guess what, my car was the same way.  Now please tell us why this happened.   ???
