Originality / 1968 Front Spoiler!
« on: January 21, 2010, 04:29:53 AM »
I know there were two front spoilers for the 1968, ( 3916673-The first one and I understand that it was just screwed to the valance panel ) and ( 3943249-The second one and I understand that it was supposed to use the braces 3943253 & 3943251 ).  My 1968 Z28, 07C, has the spoiler option ( D80) but didn't have the spoiler when I bought it,  but upon removing the valance panel from the front end I noticed that the screws that mounted the spoiler and a small piece of the plastic under the screws from the old spoiler remained.  I did not find any braces attached so I am presuming that it either had the first design spoiler or it had the second design and when the original spoiler departed that the first owner removed the braces.  I am about to purchase a new spoiler and  I want to get the right one that matches the  date of the car.

So....does anyone know when the first design was deleted and the second design was added to the production line, or even if the second design was ever added to the production line and was only available as a service part?  Also, are both of the spoilers classified as original to the car or is the first one, only, original to the car?

Any pictures showing both of the spoilers would be greatly appreciated.....just to make sure I get the right one.

Thanks in advance for any advice given....

Restoration / Tie Rod Dust Seals!
« on: September 28, 2009, 02:59:08 PM »
Does anyone have a good source for the tie rod dust seals that look like the originals?  I have found the urethane ones that fit but was looking for the original looking rubber ones.  My original tie rods are in great shape but a couple of the boots were torn and I hate to buy new tie rod ends just to get boots.  Any info will be greatly appreciated.....Thanks in advance.

Restoration / Restoration Shop for '68Z.
« on: August 10, 2009, 02:47:20 AM »
I have a 1968 Z28 that needs restoration and I have decided that it needs to be restored to its original self and I don't think I can do it justice. I live in west Texas with no restoration shops anywhere near me. Could any of you guys recommend a good resto shop, anywhere in the state, that can restore my Camaro to its former self? Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. I do know about Lucas Restoration but haven't contacted them yet.  Thought I would try closer to home first.

Thanks in advance.....

Restoration / Spray Washer Sand Blasting?
« on: July 30, 2009, 05:29:42 PM »
Has anyone ever used their spray washer to sandblast? Ran across this item recently.....http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_6970_8520_8520&issearch=2260 and was wondering if this worked very well. I am not interested in blasting a body but mainly for blasting subframe and other metal parts for rust and paint removal. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.......

Restoration / Engine Paint!
« on: April 18, 2009, 02:32:12 AM »
Can someone recommend a good engine enamel that looks  like the original?  I started painting some of my external engine parts today and am not pleased with the color hue.....seems to be somewhat subdued....not bright enough as I want it to be.  It is VHT Sp123....makes a good finish but It does not seem to be the right hue.

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Restoration / Rattle Paint Restoration!
« on: March 10, 2009, 06:37:10 PM »
I have seen several list of the various parts and the paint colors associated with the restoration of the 1st. gen Camaros.  My question is this.....has anyone compiled a list of "Rattle Paint" manufactures and their products that closely match the colors of the original parts?  I've seen a couple of recommended paints but have never seen a comprehensive list that might cover a large spectrum of the colors needed.

Thanks in advance if anyone can help with this question,

Restoration / 68 Z28 Oil Dipstick Seal!
« on: February 25, 2009, 04:29:05 AM »
I have a perfectly good  '68 302 dipstick except that the rubber seal on the upper part of the dipstick is starting to crack......is it possible to replace the seal?  If so, has anyone seen a replacement for sale anywhere?  I can't recall ever seeing one.
Thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide,
Jerry

Restoration / 68 Z28 Intake Manifold Bolts!
« on: February 16, 2009, 09:16:01 PM »
Trying to put my original '68 302 engine back together (has been out of the car for 30 years) and I am trying to come up with the right bolts for the intake manifold.  I can see where you would possibly need longer bolts for the lift brackets, smog pump bracket, and the alternator bracket which would leave seven shorter bolts.  After going through my old original bolts all I could come up with were three 3/8 16 x 1 1/8 with a "WB" on the bolt head, silver painted heads with orange over spray and three 3/8 x 16 1 1/2 with an "A" on the bolt head, no paint.  So it looks like I am missing a few.  Does anyone know the correct lengths of the various bolts as well as the correct markings and finish.  I have seen several bolt kits advertised but they all seem to have bolts the same length and are silver cad finished.  So I thought someone with an original car might know this information.   BTW....my car is a third month of July '68 build, late built cars seem to be different sometimes.

One other thing....I have seen questions on the color of the lift brackets and most everyone says they were orange, well mine were painted silver.  Anyone have knowledge as to the correct color?

Thanks in advance for any info you can provide.

Restoration / Phosphating Bolts?
« on: February 09, 2009, 09:38:02 PM »
Anyone have instructions and a source for chemicals to phosphate bolts and other metal parts?  Have lots of clean bolts and need to come up with some good ideas for coating them to look as they were new OEM pieces.  Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Sonet

Restoration / 68 Z28 Smog Pump Pulley
« on: December 18, 2008, 08:48:06 PM »
Question for all the experts.....I have an original 68 Z28 (engine build date of June 19, 1968) that has a smog system that has never been touched, although it has been sitting on a shelf for the last 25 years.  Now that I have decided to restore the car back to original, I have been cleaning up the smog system to reinstall it.  I had always thought and seen nearly everywhere that the 68 Z28 smog pump was supposed to have the deep groove #3925522 pulley, but mine has the #3927116 pulley.  I looked up the setup in the 68 Assembly Manual and under the RPO Z28 section nothing is mentioned about having a different pulley other than what comes standard on all the other V8's with manual transmission and no air conditioner, which is the #3927116 pulley.  I looked up the parts manual and it stated the #3925522 pulley was for the 68 396/427 HI Po engines but nothing was mentioned about the 68 302 having anything different other than the #3927116 pulley.  Am I missing something here?  Could someone possibly tell me why this discrepancy is present in my system or is it actually standard for the #3927116 to be present?

Thanks in advance for any info.......

Restoration / 1968 Z28 Water Pump Studs
« on: December 18, 2008, 06:45:08 PM »
I have a good RH water pump stud but I don't have a LH stud.  My alternator bracket is just bolted to the water pump with a bolt and the bracket appears to be spaced to far in toward the block when you look at the adjust bolt connection at the top of the alternator...the outside bracket kicks out at the end of the two brackets.  It appears that there should be a stud there instead of a bolt.  Does anyone have a good number for the correct stud that would fit there?  I can't seem to find any part number in any of the books and manuals that I have.  Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Sonet
