you know your spoiler is going to hit your rear antennae?

LOL.. I know, it's been that way the whole 34 years I've owned the car. It wasn't born with a rear spoiler but it was on there when I bought it and it just seems at home.

Thats a good looking color. Is that what color your car came from the factory?
Thank you. Yes Butternut was the original color although when I bought the car in 1980 it was Gold. I had it painted the 77 Corvette Yellow in first pics in 1981, but I have wanted to return it back to Butternut for probably 20 years. After hurting the big block at the drag strip in early 2006 I set it aside & started on the rotisserie resto the end of 2009.  I've worked on it off & on.. mostly off. lol..  over since, & painted it myself at home here in my garage last May through July.

Restoration / Trim Vinyl top ?

I am about ready to instal my Vinyl Top on my 68 and was wondering if you all have advice on trimming the top around the quarters and rear filler panel? I had a top put on my car 20+ years ago and the guy ran a razor blade around the chrome molding and it cut through the paint and caused a bunch of rust.  >:(

Here it is almost 4 years later & this time I will just do it myself so I am looking for any tricks or advice on this. How did the GM trim the tops?
 Thank you in advance,
 Nick

The "bullet mirror" change out was very popular along with "Grant GT" steering wheels, "slot mags" or "Krager SS" rims, door and rear deck speakers, diamond tuck interior, "Hurst" shifters,"Gabrial Hi-Jackers", "Hooker Headers", "Moroso" chrome for under the hood and removing anything attached to the motor not needed for power. All added"improvements" for cruising town. Unfortunately a lot of the original parts went straight to the trash. Oh did I mention if you could afford paint and body work, adding rear fender flairs and removing those "hideous" factory stripes was a plus. And don't forget the "Isky" cam and "Holley" carb that came with endless adjustments and power valve changes.  ??? :-\ :o

I agree, my 68 SSRS 396 had the slotted mags and the 2ng gen bullet mirrors on it when I bought in in 02/'80. On top of that, I was one of those idiots removing most anything that didnt make it quicker in 1/4 mile.  :-[

Steve,
here is the pic you requested, it looks like where I scraped it, it's just metal under the polished area. I dont see any paint or anything else.
Thanks again,
 Nick

Steve68,
I think I sent you a PM with the vin, but it isn't showing up on my end, can you confirm you received it?

Do you want me to scrape the out side of the cover its self or do you mean the door cover molding?

Thank you Steve for the quick response & the link. The grill & head light covers got sprayed back in early 81 when I had the car painted The only pic I can find from back then that shows the cover on it is this one, but it is so bad I can't see anything anyway, lol...

I dont remember it being chrome & I was just a 14 year old kid anyway so I probably didn't car anyhow.  ;D  I am sure it was painted long before I bought the car anyway, as the kid I bought the car from had changed the color to Gold from Butternut & done some pretty bad repairs to the car, prior to wrecking the car & then selling it to me.

Here are a few more of the head light cover. The mold # is 3

I took a knife and scratched the black paint off the horizontal bar and it likes it could have been chrome?? I also did it on the vertical bar & it didn't show anything but Black, so I think that would rule out primer??

Here is another pic of the outside chrome piece , I am pretty sure it has been masked and painted as the tape line looks to be very inconsistent.

Thank you again for all the great info,
 Nick

Hey guys I know this is a really old thread but I am about ready to order a new grill for my 05D SSRS 396 and wanted to make sure the grill with the chrome was correct for my car. When I bought my car in Feb. 1980 it had been wrecked and a we put a new Black grill and left side head light cover. The right side cover was original to the best of my knowledge and looks like it has traces of chrome on it.

Here a few pictures and any all input would be greatly appreciated.

I am trying to wrap up the front subframe on my 68 SSRS and was curious if there was a list somewhere of all the correct finishes for the front suspension components?
Thanks in advance
 Nick

Just wanted to say, Thank you again to everyone for all your help & suggestions on my Butternut dilemma. I ended up going with Martin Senour and was able to buy it locally. Finally got out there today and shot the back half of the car and hope to do the rest in the coming weeks. most likely try & shoot the tail pan & rocker Black out this coming week.
