Thanks guys!        Reading all the new info on my Camaro on this site and TC has enthused me to begin working on my Z28 again (it's been 'waiting' since 1981)...
JohnZ:  NCRS is just gonna have to wait a while to get to judge that black '72 Corvette coupe I bought last year at Carlisle ...  .. you know.  the one with the wing and flares?

So when were the P T and B marks put on?  and why?  they must have been applied at different times by different people?  after QA inspection of those areas?  or ?    and why would the cars be marked on both sides of the firewall?

i have stated this before, but here it is again.   my family owned and operated a chevy dealership for many years, and i asked my father about this, jerry has met my dad so he knows i am not making this up. he told me those damn things washed off the first time you cleaned up the car for PDI.  not really paint probably some water based stamp. they are very seldom seen in real life just another goofy bull thing like the fan sticker stated above.

Well, I might have agreed with you before I went out to my car and checked ...      (Personally I hate to see those 'unknown' paint marks all over a freshly restored car..  my theory is that NO ONE knows what many of them mean, and most restorers are simnply following the 'monkey see' monkey do' rule.. 

Anyway, after seeing some info here and on TC about the PTB mark, I was examining my firewall one night a week or two ago, and sure enough, I saw a faint PBT (in green) just above and to the right of my brake booster...    I took a photo of it, but don't have it where I can post it right now.   Note:  I bought my '69 Z28 (norwood car) in 1976.  It has sat in my garage undriven (*un-anything) since 1980.  It has never been restored....

These cars were painted in lacquer; lacquer is not very 'shiny' before it's buffed....  If it isn't exterior surface sheet metal, then it wasn't buffed... 

If you use basecoat/clearcoat, and put clear there, it will be shiny.......  but I have no idea how the cars are 'judged', since most/all of the restored cars seem to have base/clear on them....    Isn't the 'wrong' paint judged down??

My original distributor needs shimming properly (badly)...  I've never ran it, but would like to set it up and run it now.   Where is the best source for a 'shim kit'?   Are they generally available in parts stores as a 'kit'?

.... so I went and looked again, and he was right.    but the information was too small to read 'without clicking on it'...  so that information was 'almost hidden' to me.... as I read thru.  I think the importance of that info is sufficient, that it should be made more prominent....  just a suggestion....

The point I was trying to make was that all the biig block engines I've seen have the application code stamp on the LEFT hand side of the pad, and the VIN on the right hand side.   The CRG page you referenced does not address that difference that I've seen (and I went back and looked again in response to your post)...   ie.  Big blocks stampings are ordered oppositely from Small blocks re the VIN and App stamped codes...

Aren't big blocks stamped opposite order from SB engines?  re the VIN and app codes?   I may be screwing this up, but I know I've read sometime in the past a reason/situation for the opposite order....

I'm not positive on how to decode the fan/cluch dates..   

What other codes/dates should I be documenting on my car?

I'd like to try having it judged in the 'Original Unrestored' class next year.    What is the best show to do so?   What is involved in getting it registered?   Should I remove the ceramic headers, Mallory Rev Pol dist, and Judson Electron magneto, and put back the original distributor, coil, and exhauist manifolds?  (I don't have the smog system)..

Jerry,  I'm taking that you believe the last '69 Z28 (sometime in Nov '69) had non dripper VC's.. and the first '70 Z28 LT1 had dripper VC's?   IS that your belief?   Do you have any GM iinformation that supports such a date for that changeover?

REading this .. I got curious (even though it's almost midnight).. I went down to the garage and disassembled my original fan/clutch, and found the CV Eaton clutch (the one shown for L78/COPO in CRG, along with an unstamped 7 blade fan... My car is a September 1969 build (09C)... with engine components from the last week of August.
