Originality / Re: color of front leaf spring bracket?
« on: April 17, 2013, 07:02:52 PM »
Thanks John!   so it appears I was mistaking 'the flowcoat primer' for being like the 'gm reconditioning black'...?
Can you provide any other details about the exact type of primer that was?  lacquer?  enamel?   Typically a primer is porous and absorbs moisture over time....  the paint used by GM doesn't seem to be very bad in that sense..?

I've always used the GM Reconditioning black as being the most similar paint I could use (to what was used in the factory), but was it?   what would be closer??

The factory used the black wtihout primer (as you can tell when you strip down a an original part (which still has paint residue).

What the factory used in the flow-coat system WAS the primer (black lacquer primer); what made it stick and last for years was the hot iron phosphate treatment, which provided the "tooth" on the raw metal for the paint to stick to.

I've cleaned and prepped a LOT of original factory parts (from '55's thru 'early 70's).. and the black underhood/underbody parts always showed nothing but black, and I assumed it was all the black finish coat.    John:  Were ALL the parts that got the black semi-gloss/satin final paint (underhood and underbody) were they All primed black first (lacquer?) before the black final coat?   I'd like to understand that better so I can better replicate that factory finish.   The GM reconditioning black specifies thinning *(if necessary) using enamel reducer or mineral spirts, so I'm assuming it's an enamel?  That's the closest thing I've found/used for years (30 yrs or more) to duplicating the 'look'.  I'd be very interested in learning more ..  as much as you can provide to us!

Motorman?  CLEM?  Is that you?   *S*
If that area exposed in Jerry's photo is indicative of your entire car (originally), it's definitely the lavendor orchid color!~   and I definitely know that you know what you are talking about.   and I recall you talking about buying a Z28 for your wife at that time....  now that all the pieces are coming together.!

I hope you are doing well, since it's been a few years since I saw you at the Vetteheads tent in Carlisle *S*
Hey!  and that carburetor you rebuilt under the tent is still working great on my '72 (previously mine, then Ed's, and now mine again)....
*(although I really had my doubts it would ever work watching you rebuild it and tossing parts that you said..   'Ah we don't need that'..    not to mention the alcohol taht was put away under that tent.. and not even mentioning the strawberrys..  :)

Here's a clear photo with the roof rail track removed from the pillar area showing the original silver color.  Does not look like Evening orchid to me?
Well. that photo under the roof rail *definitely* looks like it was originally the lavendor color!   I have a '69 Corvette in Cortez Silver (the same as the silver color on Camaros), and the cortez silver has NO lavender/pink in it at all!~

I remember seeing '65 Chevelles in that color when they were new; was different, and pretty... but I'm the guy who ordered a '70 Roadrunner in the Limelight color and a 70 Challenger RT/SE in purple! .. but I will use the excuse that the purple challenger was for my wife!!  :)
PS.  I never knew the name was 'evening orchid' and was just teasing about the 'prom'.. That color did tend to fade badly with age and exposure to the sun's uv... but I'd suppose you're using modern base/clear which should be less susceptible.   The newly painted cars I've seen in that color seem to be a bit more 'orchid' than I recall when they were new...

To be honest, the older pics of the paint look silver. My gut said orchid at first until I read what everyone else had thought. Now I'm going back to what I originally thought, Orchid. That is going to be one unique looking car. Should draw some attention.
Yep, that's a pretty color... for a girl...   :)

I've done it both ways, and to be honest, I'm still not sure which is preferred.  The factory used the black wtihout primer (as you can tell when you strip down a an original part (which still has paint residue).   I like the reconditioning paint for it's gloss level, as I think that comes closest we can to what the factory did, so I use it in spite of it's lower durability (but how much weather, 'use' and 'misuse' are out cars going to see?   not much I suspect...
PS.  if you do prime, I'd suggest sanding most of it off, or applying it very thin if you're going to cover it with gm reconditioning black.

that's what I've been doing, Mike....  about the closest we can come, and it uses the minimum of paint to get that 'thick effect'..

Is your car on a street?  in your driveway? or otherwise in view?    If it's undergoing long term restoration and not parked on city/state streets, and it's not stored in an 'unsafe' manner, then why does it have to be registered for the highway?   and whether you have insurance or not is your own decision unless you are endangering others...    I have trouble believing our country/society has gotten this 'UN Free'....????? .. although maybe we have..  :(
PS.  check with one of the classic insurance companies (ANPAC Chrome is one I have and it's very reasonable); they seem very flexible, so ask them if your car is undergoing restoration, can you still ensure it?  It's a 'stated value' insurance company, so if you don't insure it for a large amount, the only issue is liability, and if you aren't driving it..  what liability is there?       http://www.anpac.com/classic-car-insurance/

Restoration / Re: Solid subframe bushings at the core support ???
« on: April 14, 2013, 06:35:17 PM »
The only possible purpose would be an attempt to use the front sheet metal structure to *further stiffen* the subframe... which I would question the effect as well.   If solid mounts were used at the rear four attachment points, essentially the rear of the subframe is 'a part of the body structure, leaving only the 'cantilevered flexibility' of the subframe in question (re the suspension geometry).  Does the front sheet metal provide additional regidity to the frame structure?   I'd guess any impact would be minimal?

One can 'take care' or one can 'use it up'..  :)    *(junkyards are full of the 'used up' ones)..  or at least they used to be full of them when junkyards were plentiful..  :)

Most of us with Camaros have well over $10K in just parts, not even counting our travel to shows and chasing parts and not counting the time invested in our own research.
To those on the CRG who support us with INFORMATION on our cars - my sincerest gratitude is extended.

That said:  I think I'm done with this thread......
