Restoration / Re: Ball Joints 69 Camaro
« on: May 15, 2013, 02:57:36 PM »
I reused my uppers also (they were good and tight), but replaced the lowers...
there is very little load (only lateral) on the uppers, so they generally last 2-3 times longer even in a car that sees lot of miles...
Attached is a photo of my orig upper, after removal for cleaning and suspension & brake rebuilding.. and reinstallation.
These uppers are the originals, never replaced on my 09C 69 Z28..

  #3891693 is a '67 Standard Grille.  I have a N.O.S. one for my Camaro.
Thanks!   :)   I need to find a '67 owner then... and so some trading.  Are these of any interest to a '67 owner?

I *thought* I'd gotten an NOS '68 Camaro grill in a bunch of stuff a few years ago, but I just went down and checked the PN on the box.. and it's  3891693.   Anyone got any idea what this is?

check out UPC 0  Sheet A10 in the '69 AIM.   It has several measures whch shows the height differences.   It's  from minimal to less than an inch, but it is enough to be noticeable eg as compared to a typical SS/V8 camaro.

Id' want to see a good closeup photo of the trim tag, and for sure a great picture of the engine Pad... as well as engine cast date, and transmission stamped codes...    it looked like a pretty nice car, and obviously a lot of $$ spent putting some reproduction items on it (chambered exhaust, headers, repro battery, etc...)

Originality / Re: Starter nose for Z28 starter
« on: May 07, 2013, 04:09:24 PM »
Well...  you'll need to search with a few different keys..      Is this the nose you need?    You get an entire rebuilt starter if it is.  for $59..

Decoding/Numbers / Re: REAL PACE CAR?
« on: May 06, 2013, 03:53:34 PM »
It looks questionable to me..  for several reasons, but I'm not a pace car expert... I just have always liked them!   I know body number numbers are not assigned in sequence, and there are situations which occurred, but when compared to a schedule which  'matches up' the numbers over the production year, the body number is approximately 3 months behind the VIN...   Is this possible?  typical?  or  something to do with the Pace Car production?

It seems very odd to me when body numbers are assigned on order, or initiation, and VINs are assigned in sequence with production.   Based on VIN production would have occurred in mid-late March, whereas the Body Number is more in sequence for a June body number?   OR am I looking at something all wrong?

Originality / Re: Non dripper valve cover questions.

A friend of mine had an electrical repair shop a long time ago, and he had a huge machine (tumbler) that he put the alternator bodies, etc.. into that cleaned and 'renewed' the parts.   He let me put a Z28 intake in it once, and the intake came out very nice (but it made a helluva racket) while it was being tumbled.   He told me that his machine had 'steel balls' and a cleaning solvent in it..  that did the cleaning, and I suppose the steel balls pushed the aluminum pores closed and tightened up the aluminum surfaces...

I saw two different sizes of AC Delco side post ONLY batteries last week in a local shop on a battery rack, so they should be available wherever AC Delco is sold..  like your Chevy dealer and many more places.. :)

I located some of my notes from my last discussion wtih Bob Christensen re the Service Package rear end.   It has been many years since Bob owned that car, and raced it in T/A and IMSA, but his memory is fantastic.  I talked to him 3 or 4 yrs ago by phone (he now lives in KY).   At that time he told me the standard 12 bolt rear Posi Unit had a breakaway torque of 50 ft lbs, whereas the Service Package Posi unit had 4X that amount (200 Ft-lbs), using 22 plates and larger heavier springs in the unit.  He ran his own '69 Z28 from '69 to '74, in regional SCCA, T/A, and IMSA GT, and also ran the Bolus/Snopes Camaro with Bob Mitchell (another Huntsville, AL racer/engineer).   They finished 4th and 5th respectively in class at Sebring 12 hr race in '71.   Bob Mitchell finished 2nd in class in '70 at Sebring.   They both were very good engineer/racers and raced and competed for close to 10 yrs from late '60's to late '70's.   Both bought new '69 Camaro Z28 cars and immediately converted them for competition.   I have a few parts from Bob C's Z28 (the SP rear and the original 1st day takeoff exhaust manifolds.. :).   I'd love to flesh out the specs on those service duty rears if anyone else has any info.   The one I have needs to be setup - has 4.11 gears and the original posi and two sets of axles and caliper mounting brackets, but no brake parts.   I have mid 60s' Corvette brake parts that I would like to build up the rear as close as possible to original spec A(with the parts I have).

Decoding/Numbers / *early* '68 Z28 4053 carb date code
« on: May 04, 2013, 03:44:37 PM »
There is a 4053 carb on ebay right now, with a date code of '705'.       The seller says it represents a date of 5th week of October 1967.
Is that accurate?    How were Nov 67 carbs dated? and Dec?
Was there a change in the month part of the code designation somewhere along the line between '67 and '69?
