Originality / Re: Exhaust
« on: August 17, 2013, 01:52:12 AM »
Ed, others,

Thanks for the information on the Z28 exhaust (head) pipe diameter... and that 9May letter would seem to put the question on NC8 to rest (on Camaros), as it stated the *effective date* for discontinuation of the option is May19.   To me, that says unless your car was produced on 18May or earlier, it has zero chance of having come from the factory with NC8...

For late '69 Camaros, after discontinuation of the NC8 (chambered), and after the introduction of the resonators to the standard transverse muffler system, What was the diameter of the exhaust (head) pipe off of the manifolds??    People who sale these, list both 2" and 2-1/4" diameter.  Which is correct, and acceptable in the judged original classes?

My 69 RS Z came with no guages. My 69 L78 had none either not even a tach.
I assume your 69 L78 was an early car, did they eventually make the tach mandatory on the L78 cars, like they did on the Z?

Just for sakes of accurate terminology, the tach was not *mandatory* on the Z28, but it did become *standard* equipment later in the '69 year.  The only *Mandatory* options for the Z28 were the disk brakes and the 4 speed manual transmission! .. :)

Continuing with the discussion about factory gauges in race cars:
While I did not race my Camaro on a track, I did (as most Z-owners did) participate in some competition on the street.. :)
Attached below is how I addressed the 'sloppy tach' issue in my 69 Z28 in the 70's when I was driving it regularly.  I removed the original tach and the plastic housing around it (and saved it for installation later - which is now.. :)...  then I bought an extra plastic cover and cut out the 'clear face portion', because it interfered with the larger Sun Supertach.  I then installed the Sun Supertach in the same location as the factory tach came from the factory, and installed the modified plastic cover.   Photo attached.   This approach worked for me, because in the late 70's, I didn't want to make any 'non-recoverable' modification to my very original Z28.
Note:  I did 'trust' the mechanical oil pressure gauge which came in the console gauge cluster, so I did no other mods to my car (other than a Mallory Rev Pol and Judson electronic magneto, and some internal engine parts.. Forgedtrue pistons, lunati blueprinted cam, etc  and it would rev well beyond the 6500 rpm that I *tried* to observe.. most of the time...  :)

I'd like to see the height on one which sat unsprung for the last 40 years vs sitting with the suspension compressed.
measure your rocker height and compare to Chevrolet's spec (from the AIM), and let us know...?

take a photo on the same plane as the top of the front tire, or do some measurements from the top of the tire to the top lip of the fender.  Yours looks closer to 'factory' Z28 than James, but the perspective of your photo makes that hard to see.

Copo, I've plugged in your data for you.   You didn't say if it was an RS, but I assume NOT?  and no stamped PN?

It would be very interesting, if you measured the distance from the bottom of the rocker, both sides, at front of rocker and back of rocker.   That would give us a good comparison to 'spec'... ?  make sure you're on a good level surface to get the best measures with the tires properly inflated.

to me, it looks between and inch and 2 inches high in front.   I expect to see the top of the fender be approx. even with the top of the tire in front sitting on level ground (for Z28s)..

General Discussion / Re: Chambered Exhaust Option - 69 Z
« on: August 09, 2013, 05:04:25 PM »
'Red69' and I worked out a deal, so that he received my NOS chambered pipes, and I got something I needed for my late '69 Z28 (a very nice pair of GM resonators which late Z-cars received).   And the shipping worked great too, between Bama and Wash state, which is a marvel in itself!... :)   Since my original exhaust pipes were cut for headers, I need to find a good original pair of head pipes and I'd be set with all-factory original GM exhaust...  :)

PS.  Reading this old thread, someone asked why the '69 Camaro chambered exhaust had so much trouble meeting noise standards (in PA and maybe elsewhere?), whereas the mid year Corvettes seemed not to have as much problem and they use the same muffling technology.   I'd never considered that before, but  *Maybe* it had to do with the single point decibel meters, and both Camaro exhaust pipes coming out the rear, and the corvette having side exhaust (you really don't get the full effect from a single side or the back)...

Maintenance / Re: Front Brake Hoses..
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:32:54 AM »
I've got 3 'older' cars which I purged, cleaned, changed all the rubber parts, and changed over to Dot5/Silicone fluid, the oldest 25 yrs ago (a '69 Corvette).  The other cars are a '60 Corvette, and a '57 Bel Air.   No brake problems since with any of them, even though they sit most of the time.   I've recently gone thru the Camaro's brakes the same way, and installed silicone fluid in it, although it has not been driven as yet.  For someone who has many cars, which sit more than they are driven, I strongly recommend silicone fluid to reduce costs and effort in keeping your cars maintained.   If I only had a single car, which I drove often, then perhaps I'd make a different choice, but I'm not sure.

Now I understand, that car looks sweet in the drive way with the early torq thrusts. Still surprises me to see so many unrestored cars without the console gauges factory, it seems like more of the track oriented cars did not have them. Maybe they ran a set of mechanical stewart warner gauges instead.

Race/Track cars used *real* gauges; mostly the 'gauges' installed by the factory back then were laughed at, especially the tachs, and electrical gauges/idiot lights.   I don't think I've ever seen a real race car that used the factory gauges.

Originality / Re: 1969 OEM AM antenna question.
« on: August 08, 2013, 04:42:44 PM »
and shown below is the assembled view.   The 'collapsed length' of my antenna is 18" from tip to the top of the retainer nut.
Hi Austin,  well.. it's not MY resizing skills, it's done by the Light Image Resizer software, recommended on this site by JohnZ many months ago, and which I tried and liked, and ultimately purchased.   It's quick and easy and does retain outstanding detail in very small file sizes.   After taking my higher resolution image, I first run it thru Paint to clip out the portion I want to post, then use the Light Image Resizer on the clipped portion.   You can repeat the process with lower detail until the file size fits the CRG requirement.   I think the images I posted this morning were 100kb or less each...   Try it.. you'll love it too! and we'll get to see more photos of your car too! :)  you can download and use it for free, but after several uses, it gets *slower* unless you purchase it.. :)    For $20-30 it's great.

And thanking JohnZ again for recommending it previously!  :)
