Dealers would be notified ahead of time when a car was being shipped to them, and have copies of the equipment, etc, so this car could have been 'enroute' via hauler, and had a buyer lined up.   I know that I've asked about specific cars/equipment in the past, and had the sales people check and tell me they would have one like that in a week or two...

additional squirters was the only possible reason that occurred to me, but I couldn't remember having seen that before (or it had been so long I'd forgotten) *G*   Thanks...

$3355 wasn't a bad price out the door for a very nicely equipped '68SS... :)
(Wouldn't we all like to go order one like that today?) *G*

How would you go about trying to 'salvage' it?  other than to mask if off and 'restore' around it??   can such a sticker be removed and re-applied after the cleanup or  restoration work?

Originality / Re: bell housing
« on: August 22, 2013, 02:11:45 AM »
the photo posted by Scoop was obviously of a restored car, where 'pretty' was the primary goal.   Originally, the factory paid NO attention to 'pretty' when they painted the engine.   The paint around the edges of the bellhousing was 'incidental' only, and not intentional, thus was not completely painted, although, again, there were variations depending on whose hand was holding the paint gun.

when they painted the engine, the bell housing was attached, but since it was an aluminum part, and hidden from view of the buyer, they didn't have a specification to paint it..  so generally it only got overspray adjacent to the engine, haphazardly.. but again, since it was done by humans, there are big variations from engine to engine..

Originality / Re: trunk latch on 69 z
« on: August 21, 2013, 05:02:42 PM »
Scott,

Attached are a couple of photos showing my original never restored trunk latch...  I hope this helps.  I think you can see that the latch got some overspray from the body paint, and was incompletely painted by the trunk splatter.  Based on looking at lots of similar areas on many original chevys over the years, I would also suspect there were variations from car to car, since it basically was an 'overspray / transition' area of the car.

I know of no reason to suspect the 'oil pump' might fail.

Have you ever seen the insides of a chevy oil pump?  they are very simple.   If it has oil in it, it's self lubricating, and if it has good pressure, then it's working as it should.   About the only issues I've ever heard of with a factory small block chevy oil pump, is the pickup coming out of the pump, and the probability of that in a street car has to be infinitesimal...

Run it til the oil is hot and well circulated, then drain the old oil (check for foaming or water?).. then fill with new oil.... make sure you have enough, but not too much.. :)

Trans-Am Camaros / Re: 2013 Monterey motorsports reunion: Who's going?

The yellow '69 Z28 in the first photo below once belonged, or still belongs, to Rick Sterbins?  (I see Sterbins automotive on the fender...)...  Attached is a photo from the Supercars.net, showing the same car in the 2010 Monterey Reunion.

I'm almost positive Richard is the same 'Rick Sterbins' I knew from the USAF at Keesler AFB, around the '69-70 time frame.    Rick had raced a '66 Mustang notchback (one of a small handful of Shelby-ized race notchbacks) in Europe and all over, but returned from Europe, sold the Mustang to a friend of mine (Mike Seus) who converted it to the street.  Rick then bought a yellow '69 Z28... :)    I'm guessing this is the same Z28 he bought back then?

Originality / Re: Correct starter for '67 - 327
« on: August 19, 2013, 08:32:48 PM »
Does anyone KNOW WHY  different PN's were used?

First gen Z28s, which were the highest compression small block engines, all had manual transmissions.  The 'books' say that PN 1108367 is correct for the Z28, and for all manual trans small blocks.   Do automatic trans cars requires a different starter?   Is this typical that auto cars and manual cars get different starters?   Is the difference the torque required, OR the teeth on the starter drive gear?  or ??     What's the difference and the reason for it?

Originality / which Headlamp retainer is correct for 69 RS ?
« on: August 19, 2013, 08:25:05 PM »
When I disassembled my front clip and all the RS parts, I noticed the car had two different size (depth) Headlamp retainer rings.   These appear to be identical except for the depth, and both/either work fine.    One is approx. 13/16" deep, and the other is 1" deep.   Which of these are correct?   or did GM use both sizes interchangeably?   One corner of my car was hit before I bought it in the mid 70's, so I'm not sure if both these parts are original from the factory, OR not.  Your help greatly appreciated so I know which of these to replace.. :)   Photos are attached...
