General Discussion / Re: 1969 B.U. Rear End
« on: November 22, 2013, 02:42:48 AM »
Gary my car is an early September built Z28 and I thought that maybe a C.B.U. rear end would be the best fit, but I have never seen one for sale.

My car is fairly close to yours (build date approx. 17Sept69).  My rear is a   "C  BU0829G1" .      The 'C' is displaced a bit in front of the BU code.. so it's easy to miss, or misinterpret (at least on mine, where the 'C' had caught a rock or something, and was a bit damaged, distorted..    I believe Bryon has full data on the changeover from BU to C BU (etc), and if I remember correctly it is likely that change occurred along with a change in the casting number for the differential, and it likely occurred on, or about on, the normal changeover date to the next model year (end of July?)..

6-cylinder Camaros / Re: Appreciation/Recognition for 6 bangers!
« on: November 21, 2013, 07:38:51 PM »
Gary in your signature it shows 55 nomad and 57 nomad, I think you need to "spread the wealth".....ha ha :D

I also like the shoe box chevys. I have a 55 hardtop now. it took 5 years for me to talk my friend out of it. Since everything else I have is pretty much stock, the idea for the 55 is a alumium LS1 with a 6 speed, and just drive the car in primer and enjoy it.. ;)

BUT I am just accumulating parts right now, I have almost everything except the computer, and heads, and some small engine accessories.
There is a long term goal to get all the vehicles under one roof like a barn or airplane hanger, so it will still be some time before it gets put together.

I have had cars with a 6 and they worked well as a daily driver. I bought a 65 ranchero(with a 6) for $200 bucks and drove it for a couple years probably 100k miles, before I sold it for $700. My 64 C/10 had a 6 in it when I got it as well, man that motor ran forever, but when top speed came down to 45 mph, I had to pull it, it has a mean 327 now. I also have a 66 C/10 with a 6 that runs like a charm, although I do vision swapping in that 327 in the future, and building a more wicked motor for my 64.

There is a certain charm to those 6 cylinder vehicles, thats for sure.

...  Nomads were built for 3 yrs (don't mention the later years when they 'used/abused' the name  so a real Nomadder must have all three"
Doesn't it seem that nowadays, all Chevy marketing can do is 'reuse' the old names..  how long since they had  'new idea'???

.. Your 55 HT... like a modernized 2-lane blacktop car..  *G*   I dig it..

...the more cars you buy..  the more difficult it is to have all your cars together; I'm spread between two shops now, with a 3rd one undersay.   :)

..The 327 ci engine was perhaps the *best* overall combination of torque/power/revvability of all Chevy's combinations...

... I didn't much care for 6-cyl, until an airman bud of mine bought a new '69 Camaro with the 250/6cyl..  I was very impressed with the way it handled and ran..  :)

Decoding/Numbers / Re: 69Z rear ratios

John,

What FirstGen was saying is that due to the rod 'angle' relative to the crankshaft throw during combustion (and the power stroke) that some of the energy available from that combustion is actually applied to the cylinder walls - thru the piston sidewalls/skirt, and not 100% to turning the crankshaft.  That results in 'lost energy', increased wear to the skirt and cylinder walls, etc.   That said, *nothing* is perfect, and everything we do is a compromise of one form or another..  and IF you can have a longer rod (for a given stroke), then that loss and increased wear is reduced.  If you took all those things to an extreme though, made the rods very long, the engine would have to get larger/heavier to accommodate it, or the piston pin heights shorter, which involve a lot more problems (ie.. every design is a compromise).

:)

FWIW Colvin Book FIG 17-8 1969 14x7 jj standard wheel Kelsey Hays drawing number 082153  seems to confirm that wheels were part numbered with varying finishes ,,,plain, rustproof oiled,,, primed KH spec 3323 black..,,,,
Interesting.

I don't have the Colvin book, but I'd love to see that KH drawing and part numbers; would it be possible to scan it and post the image here as a reference?

General Discussion / Re: Storing Tires
« on: November 20, 2013, 04:08:18 PM »
UV kills tires. I have all 5 "born with " tires for the Z with no sign of dry rot ,however 4:88's and a heavy right foot have left less than desirable tread. They were on the rims but off the car since 69-70. In 90 I wanted the rally's back on  and had radials mounted. Those are still on and display no rot. Also my slicks are still in VGC. My spare had a tire cover on it and had not been uncovered since 76. Sidewalls look new but signs it had been used in tire rotation. (anybody still remember when the spare was integrated in :D) I used no treatment or special way of storage other than keeping them stored in the attic. Dry and sunlight free. We have a large set of wrinkle walls  on the Anglia ,and I always keep the rear off the ground enough to relieve  sidewall pressure while being stored---off the thread but something to keep in mind for those who might be running a street slick ,which have softer sidewalls.
I remember that time very well, Jano.. but I was too *poor* for a five tire rotation, meaning that when they wore out, they ALL were worn out, so you had to buy five tires (or buy four and keep the 'best' of the worn ones for your spare).   I followed the alternative, which meant I didn't use the spare, until the original four tires wore out, then I bought only THREE new ones, and used the original spare for the 4th, and used the best of the worn tires for the spare.   It minimized how much the poor airman and/or student had to shell out for new tires in one whack!!  and I typically traded in the car before the 3rd set was needed... :)

PS.  and you are right it's the UV rays that kill tires and other rubber/vinyl items.  The only improvement I'd suggest to the original poster re 'keeping tires for a long time' in storage, would be to put each of them into a large black garbage bag and seal it up, and then store it in the dark place (basements are good and where I keep mine).

Yours seems to be oriented towards the firewall, Charley..   Are the part numbers for the exhaust manifolds and heat risers the same for '69 and '70 ??

Just Curious if Gary (or anyone else) called and bought the heat risers today?    $95 is not 'cheap', but it's apparently the list price now for that part, and MUCH cheaper than the $240 on Ebay for the same part...

General Discussion / Re: 1969 B.U. Rear End
« on: November 20, 2013, 04:36:43 AM »
I've been in the market for a late 1969 dated B.U. rear end for awhile now but havn't found one yet, I was wondering if any of the members here had any suggestions as to where to search for one. I have found early dated rear ends but no late dated ones, any help would be greatly appreciated.
.. depending on  HOW late a '69 rear you need, you might find that it's a C BU ...  labeled rear  for Aug/Sept or later '69 rears..

Does your car have both the rear antenna and rear spoiler?   Does the spoiler his the antenna when the trunk is raised?

How cool. A forum just for 6's!
I love them. Wish I could find an original car with a six.
Much more likely to be a well maintained unrestored car than if it was an 8 for sure.
....

I totally agree...  I'd love to have a '67-'69 Camaro with 230/250 3 spd on the floor for a daily driver... *S*

Maintenance / Re: Firestone vs. Goodyear Poly-glas tires
« on: November 20, 2013, 04:05:27 AM »
the 'original' Firestone Wide Oval tires were very bad, from almost every aspect..  they were supplied factory on my wife's '70 Mach I.. and they sucked big time.   rode poorly, and wore out in 10K miles.. and looked like crap too.   But that may have been related to Ford's preference for recommending a VERY LOW pressure for tires on their cars, to get a 'better ride'.   IMO, low pressure causes more tire problems and premature wear than any other practice...

they both had one as of this morning, and there were other dealers with stock as well.  The Iliinois dealer must have known I was calling LD, as he told me the price was $95.20 plus shipping... (so he was willing to ship to the customer).  I specifically asked for this part number.   They each confirmed they had one by checking their shelf, and they each told me the part was still in the GM box.  SO. If you want it for that price, call them tomorrow morning.. early.. :)
