Garage Talk / 1990 ZR-1 Speed and Endurance Record Run
« on: June 09, 2016, 02:08:53 PM »
Watching the youtube video of the Corvette assembly ops made me wonder if anyone had ever put the video of the 1990 Corvette and ZR-1 Endurance and Speed Record run on youtube.. so I looked for and found it.  :)   If any of you aren't familiar with this, or maybe had seen the video at the Corvette Plant or NCM in the past..  Here's a chance to check it out again!~

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n9rJ0RNJ3G8#t=1686.299007

When I first watched this video at the Corvette Plant in 1991/2, I knew I *had* to have a ZR-1.... :)  I've had 3 different 1990's and still own two of them, and it still thrills me to hear the LT5 rev to redline (very much like hearing the 302 rev in a 1st gen Z28!).. :)

Garage Talk / Convert your Camaro into a Wrecker?? Here's how.. :)
« on: April 25, 2016, 01:27:23 PM »
This is not camaro related, unless you have considered conversion into an automotive wrecker, but I thought this was very interesting, as I'd never heard of this before...  I suppose even *I* am not old enough.. :)

Garage Talk / Owens Corning '68 L88 Corvette
« on: April 21, 2016, 05:46:59 PM »
This car was mentioned a week or two ago re the Minilite wheels it ran, and I was also able to see this car a few weeks ago when I was in Hendrick's Performance Center shop, where it had just came back from Sebring.  At that time, I didn't know why it had been to Sebring, although it was mentioned that due to it's $$M$$ value, it was under 24 hr armed guard!  :)

Anyway .. to bring this discussion to date..  I just watched on Velocity Channel a great episode of 'Americarna' on this car.  Americarna is the series produced by Ray Everham (and of course closely tied to Rick Hendricks).  This particular episode delved into the history of the Owens Corning car, how it was 'privately ran', but supported under the table, out the back door, by GM.   In this episode, Rick asked Ray to gather up as many of the originally involved individuals who had been involved with the car, and get them down to Sebring, along with the car, and Rick was going to show up and drive the car on the track (which all happened)..  Dick Thompson, Fred DeLorenza, Gub Hufstadler, Randy Wittine, Chris Cooper, and many others showed up and discussed the car.  Ray had the OC '68 sitting along side the current C7R Corvette race car, and went over the similarities and differences between the cars, and when Rick took the car out on the track, the C7R was right alongside...  :)

All in all, a very enjoyable and educational/historical show that you all should try to catch the next time it airs on Velocity channel!

General Discussion / '69 Camaro parts at Charlotte
« on: April 12, 2016, 02:42:00 AM »
Although I didn't have time enough (or maybe speed/energy enough)??  to see ALL the parts/cars at the Speedway last weekend, I did see some parts that I almost bought (although I didn't need them personally)..   One fella had an New never mounted GM rear bumper, and a barely used very nice front bumper (pair for $250), and NOS windshield MOULDING and roof rail mouldings for another $100 ...  It was tough for this old 'parts scrounger' to let them lie there, but I did.. (a minor success for me)..  :)

Oh..  I did buy a pair of new correct 15" 'peaked' Trico wiper blades for my Z28.   and LKQ (Keystone) was selling good strong 'folding parts stands' for  $20 ea (I bought 4 more), and I bought a large piece of 5/8" thick close cell foam standing mat (56" x 7') for $20 to put in front of my workbench...

General Discussion / 68 Z28 FS in car corral at Charlotte
« on: April 11, 2016, 03:57:58 AM »
While wandering thru the vendors and car corral at Charlotte motorspeedway this weekend (AutoFair), I came across a '68 Z28 for sale and stopped to take a look and a few pix, also a discussion with the owner.  He okayed me to post his information and photos here in case someone is interested enough to contact him (and assuming he didn't sell it there this weekend).

Originality / 69 'Pace Car' wheels... YJ?
« on: April 06, 2016, 03:28:32 PM »
A friend called me last night, asked me what 'original '69 Pace Car' rallye wheels, with trim rings, centers, and 'Firestone Wide Oval' tires would be worth...  He didn't know the code (he's not an originality guy)..  I told him the value would be dependent on (Originality, and condition)... my standard answer.. :)    From my checking on CRG, these wheels would have to be 'YJ' code to be original for a Pace Car (SS) ..  is this correct? or are there conditions or other answers to this question?  I told him I'd check them out for him, but haven't yet seen them.   Can anyone here provide a 'value range' for such wheels, assuming they ARE correct YJ wheels?

Garage Talk / Z28 Emblems.... HOW MANY have been made??
« on: April 04, 2016, 04:29:41 PM »
After viewing the 'Sharkey's Z28' video prompted by the rlafash posting this morning (a real Z28), I stumbled across another video of a 69 Camaro (which was wearing Z28 emblems).. but watching the video, the owner stated when he found it ..  it was a 6-cylinder car... and he chose to put a supercharged 540 ci engine in it..  but yet..  he just HAD to install Z28 emblems also..  Apparently the emblems is the ONLY thing about Z28s that he knew anything about.  I wonder if this is true of *most* Camaro folks re their knowledge of Z28s??   Do they believe the Z28 emblems add value?  make it go faster?  ??   I suppose I'm just confused....

Interesting article in Hemmings today re 'cloners' who fake cars for sale... it's about time this happened, maybe the move will grow to bust some of the 'fake Z28 sellers'...
