Garage Talk / Misrepresentation of automobiles can be $$costly$$...
« on: November 14, 2016, 02:37:32 PM »
Here is a case of a collector car salesman being ordered to pay $110,000 for misrepresentation of a collector car ('GTO)... Maybe spreading such news will help to alleviate some of this in our hobby...

Garage Talk / Veteran's Day!
« on: November 11, 2016, 02:18:25 PM »
We are fortunate enough to have the luxury of enjoying our 'classic cars', at least partially thru the efforts of our military veterans over the years.  Today is Veteran's Day...  Display your FLAG...  ( I Just remembered to put mine out).. :)    USAF ('68-'72)

This is all the information I have on this car...

When I purchased my '69 in April 1976, I learned about the prior owner (before the seller), but when contacting that prior owner who had purchased the car (almost new) for his 16 yr old daughter, I found out almost nothing... he either didn't remember, or didn't care about passing anything along... so after 40 yrs, I tried again earlier this year and found out that 'father' had passed, but found a son who had the same name.   As it turned out, I'd never been able to locate/talk to the daughter owner, but in talking to the son (also a car nut) he told me many stories about his sister having the car, her having a bf who was a car nut and camaro owner, and himself (a Mustang owner) and all their attempts to set up races between all the cars, until their father put a stop to that! :)   But he also remembered where the car had been purchased (local Chevy dealer at the time), AND that the original owner was a young policeman!   So since then, I've been trying to identify a policeman contact who had been on the force in the 1970 timeframe!   Well, this week, I found one, who is also a car nut, and who still consults with the HPD... after talking to him yesterday morning, he spent the day calling a dozen of his old contacts...  he told me last night that he WOULD find the original owner for me!  (although it's a possibility that the orig owner passed away earlier this year)..   I've sent him photos of my car to help 'old memory recollections'.. :)   Besides identifying the original owner (a huge goal of mine for  along time), I'm also holding a tiny hope that one of those owners *might* have hung onto the PTP...  :)

So THIS has been a good weekend, that has me smiling today, in spite of my soreness from setting fence posts yesterday!

and Darrell:  How was that Texas A&M game yesterday??   Another reason to smile?  :)

There are so many restamped distributors out there, it causes us to be skeptical even when they look *real*...  What do you folks think of this one?  it appeared to me to be an untampered original...?

General Discussion / 69 Z28?? white/black with 720 int??

I think the color combination on this car (as it sits) is striking, but don't think I've ever seen an orange houndstooth interior in a white car...  I doubt the interior is 'the factory one' for this car despite what the cowl plate says (seems to be an August '68 cowl plate) and an Aug '69 VIN...  What do you fellas think?  :)

Garage Talk / Paul Walker's car collection recovered... :)

I came across this article about the recovery of Paul Walker's car collection this morning; apparently one of Paul's helper/workers 'took' the cars the day after Paul was killed.  Most if not all are now recovered... and I was surprised/delighted to see that one of them is a 'halloween edition' 1969 Z28-RS... (similar to ones owned by myself, Steve Stauger, and perhaps others on this list).. :)

Restoration / Restoring seat backs...?
« on: August 17, 2016, 03:15:14 AM »
My original seats are worn, but since I'm going for 'preservation', rather than restoration, I'm keeping them as they are.   What I've done is bought a second set of buckets, headrests, upholstery, foam, etc for a 'restored set' as well.  I had it all except seat backs, and I didn't want to remove the seat backs from my 'originals', so I bought a set of seat backs from a pace car.

These NEED restoration... there's even some 'deterioration' in places.. I'm not sure whether that's something someone sprayed on the seatbacks in the past, or if that's the vinyl itself?  Can someone who has done a nice restoration on seat backs give me some pointers on the steps to take, and what materials to use to make these old seat backs look good on restored seats?

thanks in advance.. :)

Today's Hemmings email referenced an article they first published in June 2010, entitled "32 Best Cars to Restore", and of course our favorite '67-69 Camaros were on that list...

http://www.hemmings.com/magazine/hcc/2010/06/32-Best-Cars-to-Restore/3396351.html

This is what they said about the Camaros at that time...

"Chevrolet Camaro -- 1967-'69
Same as the Mustang: Everything you need to rebuild one, no matter how rusty it may be, is available brand new. As Terry McGean, editor of Hemmings Muscle Machines, put it, "The '69 Camaro is the '32 Ford of today," which means there will always be a huge demand for these cars. You just can't lose restoring one. Best of all, they are fun to drive, reliable, and can be made very powerful thanks to a huge aftermarket for performance parts. The only downside is that even rustbuckets and rollers can no longer be had for $2,500. "

I think what they wrote is even more true today...  :)

This very interesting article in Hemmings is primarily about how/why AMC got into TA racing, but also involved the complete story culminating in their contract wtih Penske/Donahue and a championship in the waning year of TA racing...

Most will enjoy reading Peter DeLorenzo’s unusually lengthy article in this week’s Autoextremist about Corvette’s racing program:
