Originality / 'yellow light' AM/FM radio?
« on: August 06, 2013, 12:56:09 PM »
A few days ago, a friend suggested that there were yellow light am/fm radios, that may have been used part of the year on 1969 Camaros.   All I've ever heard or seen were blue light.   Is there any truth to that??

General Discussion / Very original (unrestored) '69 X44 on ebay
« on: July 28, 2013, 04:32:05 PM »
If anyone is in the market for a nice 'mostly survivor' 69 Camaro, you should check out the ebay link below.   This is a Daytona yellow, black vinyl, 307, AC, with a few non-original item, car.. even has the original blue mfg sticker (10/69)..  57K miles...   appears to be a good value even at the buy it now price.

General Discussion / fuse block and big firewall connector
« on: July 11, 2013, 08:39:15 PM »
OK Fellas.   I'd like to take the big firewall cable connector off and make sure all the terminals are clean and good.   I loosened the bolt and it didn't loosen the connector.   Does the fuse block under the dash need to be removed at the same time?    What am I missing here?  I don't want to damage anything.. :)

Restoration / heater control restoration?
« on: June 27, 2013, 02:27:54 PM »
Is it possible to disassemble an original heater control such as the one *(already disassembled)* in this ebay ad
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=400518010421&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123

... and get it back together correctly with original components?    This is not mine, but my original one has some of the 'shrinkage' in the lettered black backing.   What's necessary or available to replace that black ?paper? part?   Do the control knobs just 'pull off'? and will they push back on and stay?  I'm very hesitant to disassemble my good original part unless I now it can be reassembled properly.

General Discussion / Parts meet at Frederick?
« on: June 21, 2013, 12:13:22 PM »
Hey guys.  I'm here at Frederick, prepariing to head out to the show site, but since I haven't attended here before, I'm wondering if there's a swap meet associated?  I brought a few parts that are *extra* to me, including a good '68 Muncie M20, an NOS '67 grill, a Holley 3910 carb rebuilt, some original 14" rallye trim rings, a pr of '67-8 tail light housing assemblies (nice original), and repro '309' Master Cylinder (new).  I'm hoping I can find someone who can use some of this stuff..   I'm at the Holiday Inn Express rm 228 (white 2012 Malibu w/AL plates) if you are around here and want to take a look at these parts..

Decoding/Numbers / *early* '68 Z28 4053 carb date code
« on: May 04, 2013, 03:44:37 PM »
There is a 4053 carb on ebay right now, with a date code of '705'.       The seller says it represents a date of 5th week of October 1967.
Is that accurate?    How were Nov 67 carbs dated? and Dec?
Was there a change in the month part of the code designation somewhere along the line between '67 and '69?

Interesting article from Hemmings re the Willow Run plant....  maybe we can all pool our money, but it, and convert it to a Camaro restoration facility?  :)

Decoding/Numbers / Muncie ID ?
« on: April 26, 2013, 03:01:11 PM »
Attached is a photo of a stamped code on a Muncie trans I have had since 1971.  It seems to be stamped P8D10c, although the 'c' is very small....  Does anyone recognize this stamping to identify it?  I've always believed this trans to be an M22; it has the 'whine', although it's been so long that the side cover has been off, I don't recall even looking at the angle on the gears.   Has anyone else seen a 'c' stamped like this?

Originality / 69 Z28 Carb accel linkage and vacuum hardline?
« on: April 23, 2013, 02:45:02 PM »
I'm continuing to find 'loose parts' in my garage from my Z28 which I removed long ago (car not driven in over 30 yrs).  The two parts shown in the pix, I *believe* are from the Z28 302 engine.   The carb accelerator linkage was stored next to the manifold and carb, so I'm *almost certain* this is the original linkage rod.

The vacuum line, with steel parts and two rubber hoses, I just found in a box under my bench, and I also believe this is for the Z28.  If anyone can confirm these parts are for my Z28, I'd appreciate the information.

PS. I have a *few* cars disassembled in my garage (55, '57 Nomads, El Camino, Camaro, etc) and I *never* throw anything out!.. but after more than 30 yrs, I sometimes can't rely on my memory.. :)

Trans-Am Camaros / 69 Z/28 SCCA Racers - Hemmings article
« on: April 05, 2013, 02:46:45 PM »
I've mentioned a couple of friends of mine previously in the Trans Am threads (Bob Christiansen and Bob Mitchell), who were both engineers here in the Huntsville, AL area, who each bought new '69 Z28 cars and immediately stripped them down and modified them for SCCA racing.  They ran local, regional, and national races as well as T/A and IMSA (ultimately).   Bob Christiansen bought his off the local dealer lot in Dec  '68 or Jan '69 (a customer ordered it and then didn't pick it up, so he bought it).  His car was orange/black (with black vinyl top).  He installed the OTC 'service duty' differential wtih HD clutch pack posi, big axles, and brakes, and ultimately added HD front spindles and of course a very HD roll cage.   He was an independent racer, mostly self funded wtih some local support, so the cost of racing limited him, but he ran quite a bit in the early seventies, ultimately painting his orange/black car to a 'gray/black' combo using the R.A.C.E.(for Robert A Christiansen Enterprises) logo on it.  Later he upgraded to a '73 Camaro body for later GT IMSA series, and finally went to the smaller displacement cars because they were cheaper to run.   I hung around Bob's shop a lot in the 70's, helping a bit when I could, and learning what I could.   Bob helped me a great deal when I bought my '69 Z28/RS (orange/black) and rebuilt my engine, and even gave me some of his 'first day takeoffs' (like exhaust manifolds, an AD wheel, etc).  Bob C.s Z/28 was sold to fellow racers in the Atlanta area, was raced out of there for awhile, then was sold to an SCCA racer in Chattanooga, TN area.  I never was successful in tracking down the entire car, but did find/buy two sets of his Amer Racing magnesium 8x15 wheels and a 'service duty' disk brake rear end (4.11 rear with HD clutch packs and axles- with extra axles) which I bought from the Atlanta fellas who once owned the car.
Bob Mitchell's car was special ordered I believe since it came with the factory 4-wh Disk Option, and was also orange.  Bob M. ran initially in SCCA, T/A, and ultimately in the smaller displacement IMSA series.  My exposure wtih Bob was that I worked with him a few years in the same organization, and once got to be a 'crew member' at a Road Atlanta race (1977 or so?).  I understand his Z/28 was sold to a fella in the Nashville TN area in the '70's.
I'd been trying to find some old photos of their '69 Z/28 racers without much success until today when I found the Hemmings Muscle Car article which included a couple of great photos of their cars - probably from the '69 SCCA series?  the link is below.  I'd be interested in any comments from guys who remember these cars on the track!

Is the height of the keylock boss on the 69 steering column *different* for the non tilt column vs the Tilt column?   My car came with a non-tiltcolumn, but the space between seatback and steering wheel has shrunk significantly since I last drove it in 1980 ... :) , so I'm considering installing a tilt column.   In comparing the original non-tilt and restored tilt columns, I found a couple of differences:

Height of Keylock boss
Attached are photos of the boss for the keylock cylinder on the two columns:
Non-tilt column, followed by the higher boss on the Tilt column:

Additionally, the paint color on the bottom of the steering column is different:
Attached are the bottom showing the difference for the Non-tilt (green paint), and tilt (restored black)..

Is it 'normal' that the height of the keylock boss on a tilt column is so much higher than a non tilt?
Is the 'green' painted end of my original non-tilt factory correct?  Is the TILT end different and is the 'black painted' also correct?
Any/all help appreciated.
I need to know if this tilt column is correct re the keylock boss height and original type, and if it is, do I need to paint the end green to match the original column before installation.

General Discussion / Keys from keycode?
« on: March 21, 2013, 09:43:28 PM »
Can a locksmith make a key from my 'keycode'?   ie. the 4 digit code on the knockout?   Do any of you know a locksmith or key dealer who could make me an original set of keys using the code?

Decoding/Numbers / Starter Date Codes and 'lead' on car assembly
« on: March 14, 2013, 08:13:23 PM »
Can someone please confirm the following for me?

1.  Is 'J' the month code on a starter motor?   It's a stamped code, so I believe the 'I' is skipped and J is the September code...
2.  If 9 days before car assembly too close for a starter motor date?
