Decoding/Numbers / Original carb for engine or not
« on: September 14, 2010, 05:29:51 PM »
I learned on this site that the carburetor was installed on the engine at the assembly plant, not on the engine when it was built at the engine plant.  My car was built the 3rd week in Jan., 1969 at the Van Nuys plant; date on trim tag is 01C.  My engine stamp is V0110DZ.  The date on my 4053 Holley carb is 913, which I'm deciphering as built the 3rd week in Jan., 1969.  Could this be the original carb for my engine or is it too late to have made it onto a 01C car?  Thank you.

I usually wash mine about twice a year.  I use a car wash soap specially formulated for washing cars if it needs it to get rid of mud or dirt splashes on it, along with of course water.  If it just has a coating of dust I just use water.  I wipe it down when using the car wash soap with a washing mitt and dry it off with a genuine chamois.  I wax it completely every 2 years with Meguiar's Gold Class wax.  This works great for me.  It was repainted in the original factory color around 20 years ago with a clear coat finish, and the paint still looks great.

That's good enough evidence for me to determine that my box is the original one.  Thanks.

Thanks guys for your help.  My car's production date is 01C, so it seems a steering box assembled in Dec., 1968 would be alright for a third week in Jan., 1969 car.

Decoding/Numbers / 1969 Steering Box
« on: June 07, 2010, 05:01:10 PM »
I have searched the CRG website but could find no info on steering boxes and what the numbers on them mean.  I have a 1969 Z/28 RS with factory power steering.  I am trying to determine if the steering box is the original one or not.  The numbers I could find on it are as follows:  56865 then either a 3 or a 5 followed by a 5, 913  4, and 339  8.  Any help with what any of these numbers mean or designate would be appreciated.  Thank you.

General Discussion / Re: 69 Burnished Brown z28 on home page

The first and only Burnished Brown 1969 Camaro I ever saw in person was in Casper, Wyoming during Thanksgiving break from college in 1971.  It was a Z/28 with a black interior; I can't remember if it was standard or deluxe.  It belonged to a friend of a college buddy.  He drove it one night with me in the passenger seat.  What an experience.  The first time I had ever seen or been in a 1969 Z.  As far as I know it was originally sold and bought by my buddy's friend in Casper.  For any of you guys who currently own a BB 1969 Z thought you might like to know this info if you know your car's original history and if it came originally from Casper.  I don't know the name of the local Chevy dealership that was in Casper then.  I could find it out from my college buddy, who still lives in Casper, if anyone is interested or think they might own this Z currently.

Originality / Re: 69Z With Power Steering
« on: April 14, 2010, 03:55:57 PM »
Unfortunately I don't think there is any way to tell how many 1969 Z's came with factory-installed power steering.  My 1969 Z does have it.  I was just thinking that it makes sense to me anyway that any customer ordering a 1969 Z might have opted not to get the power steering to save money and a possible horsepower-robbing accessory; while a 1969 Z ordered by a dealership might be more likely to have power steering to up the price and provide an option that they thought most customers probably would want.

Restoration / Re: Bowtie Sticker on Valve cover
« on: February 09, 2010, 04:53:44 PM »
It sounds like the decal placement might have changed thru the first generation years.  I had a 1967 Camaro RS that I bought from the original owner; I am sure everything on that car was just as it came from the factory as it only had 48,000 miles when I bought it in 1988.  It had the L30 275 hp 327.  The Tonawanda engine sticker was on the left, driver's side valve cover.

Decoding/Numbers / Re: how many 67 rs's had 250 6 cylinder

The Camaro White Book lists 38,165 1967 Camaros coming with the 250 ci 6 cyl. engine.  This would include coupes and convertibles, also base models and Rally Sports.  There is no way to tell how many RS's specifically came with this engine.

Originality / Re: 1969 Z/28 open element air cleaner lid

Forget what I said.  I was incorrect.  I was thinking of another engine in one of my cars that didn't have a PCV valve.  Sorry.

To the best of my knowledge no 1969 Z/28 came with a PCV valve.  So the air cleaner lid with the notation about positive crankcase ventilation would be incorrect for a Z/28 302.  If I am wrong about this I'm sure other more knowledgable posters will correct me.  I want to learn as much as I can about first gen Z/28's as I own a 1969 Z/28 RS with original engine and darn if I can find a PCV valve anywhere on it.

If you have by chance the warranty booklet that came with the car originally it would hopefully have the protecto-plate still attached to it which should have the original owner's name and address.  Even if the metal protecto-plate is missing, the warranty booklet should have the selling dealership's imprint in ink on the rear of the booklet.
